My pastor once said that a person might say, “I don’t have self love, I hate myself because I am fat”. He said, “If you really hated yourself, you would be glad you are fat!” So even our self loathing is rooted in inherent self love! We want the best for ourselves; the seeming self hatred is actually hating that I am not the smartest, most talented or best looking, because I want all the best for me!
@ari3lz3pp
@ari3lz3pp Жыл бұрын
❤ That's the perfect way to put it. Seeing our faults and admitting them and looking to do something to better ourselves lies in love not hate. And we can easily confuse love/hate of behavior with love/hate of the person or subject. This happens all the time with sin. When people talk about homosexuality and other tough topics. This happens! I was pansexual for most of my life. I had to start accepting truth and stepping away from my trauma and healing in the Lord to see it; but it was never loving to myself or others with homosexual behavior. Removing the sexuality that was damaging and addictive; I was left with actual love and boundaries. Noticing adding the romanticized sexuality to these situations was actually harmful and more hateful to the self and enabling others to do the same. When I sin in other ways, it's tempting to say "well it's not that bad...I'm ok.." but then the holy spirit reminds me with feelings that tell me the truth. That all sin is damaging. It might not be immediately obvious, but it is. God loves us. And he wants us to love one another. He doesn't tell us not to sin, because we need to hate ourselves or one another. We know Satan hates us, he fell from the heavens because he refused to how to us as God's creations. He uses deception and temptation to trick us into choosing those things over God and over his love for us.

In Galatians somewhere, Paul says not to be enslaved again” but serve others”. It’s interesting because Jesus said that it is more blessed to give than to receive...serving others is a godly way to take your mind off of yourself and it’s true that God blesses us for serving Him in this spiritual Law.

Well think about this… whenever we are having a “bad day” it means that somewhere in someway our expectations for a personal need was not met and our feelings and emotions are expressed through a negative mood/attitude. We then ruminate or get caught in the loop of what is called a 90 sec rule of trigger(thought)-emotion-behavior which is a total focus on self. It bears that a good way to break that loop is to look outside oneself and serve others. I will do this even in small ways such as going through a line at the coffee shop - if I start to feel upset about a long wait I will break that negative cycle by complimenting the staff and paying for the order of the person behind me. My negative experience is turned into a positive one by realizing that it’s not just about me, but we all have a need to experience compassion and kindness.

In the book, "How to Stop the Pain" the author shares how the meaning of the scripture about not judging means to not judge people's intentions behind things, which is not ours to do. We may judge right from wrong, however. I thought that was so insightful. How often do we judge people's intentions when we do not truly know their heart!

the title says it all, for if we all are LIARS or at one time ever lied, then how can we rely on our idea of truth, it is corrupted and imperfect. Not truth at all, just a lie we tell ourselves we'd like to believe. Love Dr. Sean, his dad, Alisa and her dad Chuck, they go back a long way, they know a thing or two about Jesus, who is the Truth, the Way, and the Life.

Sean, at 18:20 in, you and Alisa remind me of what Rich Mullins once said so aptly about the immense grace of God - he said, "I would rather live on the verge of falling and let my security be in the all-sufficiency of the grace of God than to live in some pietistic illusion of moral excellence. Not that I don't want to be morally excellent but my faith isn't in the idea that I'm more moral than anybody else. My faith is in the idea that God and His love are greater than whatever sins any of us commit."

For folks that grew up hearing that they're never good enough never going to amount to anything, this puts them back under the law. Psalm 139 tells us who we are. When we know how much we're loved by our Papa God, we can love ourself. Then we can love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

I just want to thank you, Sean, for plumbing the topic of self-love a bit further. I am sure that I'm not alone in struggling to love myself in the context of previous abuse. It is not that I disagree with an innate self-centredness at one level, but just assuming that the concept of self-love is simple and concrete given the vast array of traumas that often lead to unhealthy behaviours, would be short-sighted. I suspect that for many, loving oneself in a biblical way is a lifelong challenge. This in no way denies the teaching of other-centredness, but without an authentic love for God and oneself, love for others can only go so far. I truly appreciate the vast array of your conversations and how you engage with others with love and respect. Thank you.

His grace and covering makes us 'enough' /righteous in God's eyes. It allows us to see our correct place in regards to God and need for salvation but also not be stuck in shame.

@@ATiredMom No its not. "because of Christ" what exactly do you imagine this means? Are you referring to the nonsensical bible myth that once upon a time an always existed all-powerful all-knowing being zapped everything into existence, then one day it had to send itself as a sacrifice to itself so it could allow itself to 'forgive' humanity for how it made it in the first place.

@@MrAuskiwi101 it's completely honest from a Christian worldview. I respect that you are able to perceive and interpret life and existence how you want. That is also an aspect of creation... That mankind does have the ability and 'right' to reject God. I don't understand always why He made us the way he did but without 'evil' , there wouldn't truly be the chance for 'good'. Because God created a world capable of good, it also was capable of evil that He then wanted to save us from. Every heroic story involves being willing to lay down your life for another. This principle is 'written' on our hearts, in my opinion.

@@ATiredMom" it's completely honest from a Christian worldview. " i.e. its completely honest from a self-deceptive world view. " I respect that you are able to perceive and interpret life and existence how you want." lol it has nothing to do with my 'perception' but reality, not mine, but actual reality. Do you know the difference? I hope so but it appears not. "That is also an aspect of creation... That mankind does have the ability and 'right' to reject God." Best one proves a god exists before claiming it does, says or wants things. A 'creation' is a fictional approach. Don't be afraid of evidence. "I don't understand always why He made us the way he did but without 'evil' , there wouldn't truly be the chance for 'good'." In reality a god didn't do anything. It's how imaginary things work. Also not true that one needs 'evil' ( a fictional concept) to have good. Good stands alone as good. Remember, in your imaginary word view your god created your evil. "Because God created a world capable of good, it also was capable of evil that He then wanted to save us from. " False assumption to start off with but in your ridiculous story, your god wants to 'save' us from how he made us in the first place. Sounds like a scam setup. Let's summarize you belief... Once upon a time an always existed all powerful all knowing invisible sky wizard 'god' zapped everything into existence. Then one day it had to send itself as a sacrifice to itself to allow itself to 'forgive' us for how it made us in the first place. You believe this nonsense and encourage vulnerable people to also believe it. Not good. Instead of you and encouraging others to believe nonsense then look for dubious confirmation bias how about encouraging people to look first at the evidence. There is a plethora of learned books that will lead you and others to reality. If you would like some recommendations, just ask.

When it comes to loving others as we love ourselves, there is a point that Sean makes is that we also need to take care of ourselves enough so we can love others as God expects us to love them. Even Jesus had to get away from the crowds and spend time alone with His Father in prayer in order to regenerate. You see this multiple times in scripture. However, I agree that the focus is not on loving ourselves, especially above others, but to love others as God desires us to love them. Scripture never tells us to place ourselves above anyone else. Right before he wrote about having the mind of Christ (Phil 2:5-11) he wrote… Phil 2:3-4 - “3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” It doesn’t say don’t count yourself significant but count others as more significant. It doesn’t say don’t look out for your own interests but also to the interests of others. The key part, IMO, is in verse 3… “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility…” for that is the mind of Christ we are to have. And how I fail so mauve at that, especially in reactions to other’s actions I don’t agree with. We have plenty of other passages showing us how we are to view others and their needs in comparison to our own selves such as Romans 15:1; 1 Cor 10:24; Luke 6:31 & Matt 7:12; Rom 12:3, 16; 1 Cor 13:1-7; and many others.

To continue His work of salvation on earth in place of Him until the end of the world, Our Lord founded His Church on St. Peter and made him His Vicar on earth by vesting him with His authority (Matt 16:18-19) and commissioned the Church to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching them to OBSERVE ALL that He commanded, and promised to be with the Church always until the end of ages (Matt 28:19-20). The One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church is the Church Our Lord instituted for us, poor sinners, so that we may have the surest and straight way to achieve the salvation and eternal life. Our Lord is the Head of the Church, His Mystical Body (Col 1:18, 1 Cor 12:27, Eph 5:23), His Sheepfold (John 10:1-18), His Household and the pillar and foundation of Truth (1 Tim 3:15), and Vine (John 15:1-6). Through the seven Sacraments instituted in the Church, Our Lord bestows His merits and Graces to Her members so that they may bear abundant fruits for eternal life. For the Church, Our Lord said "Whoever listens to you listens to Me. Whoever rejects you rejects Me and rejects the One who sent Me (Luke 10:16; John 13:20; Matt 10:40)." Anyone, who wants to be saved, must be a member of His Church as He is the Savior of His Body (Eph 5:23) and faithfully follow and observe Her teachings, truly living as taught and commanded to live. Otherwise, they will be detached vine-shoots from the Divine Vine, wither, and be thrown into fire. To bear abundant fruits, detached shoots must be grafted onto the True Vine and remain in Him (John 15:5). Brothers and sisters in Christ, why risk your eternal salvation by remaining outside of His Church and follow the protestant churches founded by men, who reject the teachings of Our Lord's Church and teach partial truth mixed with heresies and lies? Come and be a true member of His Church and be saved. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation (2 Cor 6:2)! Hurry, time is short and urgent as we have already entered in the end time tribulations!

I think we always desire our own self interest, so we always love ourselves. Sometimes we believe lies about what is in our self interest and other times physical addiction or focusing too much on short term self interest can cause us harm, but we are never intentionally seeking what is bad for us. Even suicidal people are just believing the lie that death is the best thing for them. Inflicting pain on oneself can similarly be seen as the best path forward, either to prevent suicide, or release endorphins, or remove guilt, etc. So I certainly don't think we need to be taught to love ourselves. Rather, we need help loving God fully and knowing what is true. Self help books can be dangerous because they are often content to use sin to defeat sin, which is rather counter productive. For example, they may use pride to overcome gluttony. While practical physical advice can be good, it seems to me that the most important way to stop self destructive behavior is to find the idols and lies motivating such actions, which hinder our worship of God. So loving God with our whole heart is the most valuable first step to routing out self-destructive behavior that hinders our ability to love others.

And when you make up that there is an objective moral code, you might be putting in one with the power to decide (my assumption commenting on a Christian video). So basically what you’re saying is, I subjectively like this powerful person over another. This is why people confuse absolutism with objectivity. Absolutism bottoms out at might makes right, where objectivity can look outside any person to evaluate moral imperatives; even one’s particular god.

Ann - AMEN. Double Amen. "Go to him (or her) alone, privately..." "If they will not hear, take one or two more..." And this is for personal trespass / sin AGAINST someone. "If thy brother trespass against thee" (singular). The problem comes from the religious attitude of rebuking people in public or, worse, gossiping behind their back. Sometimes under the guise of the prayer circle. "We need to know how to pray specifically, so give us specifics." Oy Vey. And the fact is, yes I know that Jesus says in John, "yet _if_ ye judge, judge righteous judgment" Yet he shows us a more excellent way in his most famous sermon. And those words are hard to miss and tough to twist: "Judge not and ye shall not be judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged. And with what measure ye mete, ye shall be measured yourself" But I've observed that it's increasingly in vogue for modern Christian leaders to turn that statement on its head, sorry it's exceedingly clear. "By judge not Jesus didn't actually mean judge not." 🙃

This is great. Thank you. I have 2 thoughts on the loving ourselves part- On Alisa's comment that we really do all love ourselves, I question that. I'm aware of what Paul said on that, but wonder if he were talking about what the norm should be. I started writing this having listened just up to Andrew's q. I might not have mentioned this, otherwise, but maybe it's useful. I think of an anorexic I knew, so full of self-hatred that their desire was to utterly destroy themselves, with starvation being that particular means to self-annihilation. (The being thin idea is often just a putting into words and pictures their desire not to exist, and is a convenient smokescreen for keeping others at a distance from the source of the pain). I know others so tormented by self-hatred that they will do all they can to self-destruct and ruin themselves. (The potential for truly hurting oneself is so much wider with the growth in trans operations, which is one reason these things shouldn't be given out without real in-depth counselling at the very least). Many of us maybe have some perverse fragment within us that wants to seek our own downfall when things are going well. There was an episode of Red Dwarf in which the characters found themselves in a place in which they had whatever they wanted. But one of them has his dream fall apart. He finds himself in a hot day in a cramped, malfunctioning car with a raging wife and a hoard of squabbling, carsick, pestilential children, and his own messed up world ends up ruining the others' utopias. The point being that the thing he really wanted was to be punished and enact his self-hatred. 2. Whilst Alisa says that we can love others without loving ourselves, first, I understand, but I would say that, at the very least, failure to love ourselves makes us less effective and often defeats itself- e.g. I once worked in a kitchen with a girl who I believe didn't love herself. She continually put herself in fool situations, so that she got cut or burnt or otherwise injured, but she wasn't clumsy. She was self-care-less, you could say. It came to a head when she cleaned out the ovens with a malignant spray D9 for which you were meant to use long black gloves and masks. I remember her sitting there, green-faced, as we waited for the ambulance, having worn no safety gear and breathed the stuff in all day. She was ok, but the thing was that she was desperate to serve others but because she didn't take care of herself, she ended up making work for others, instead. The same is true with a parent or spouse who doesn't eat, sleep, etc, properly. Just watch their relationships nosedive. At the very least the practical outworking of their love is stymied. I enjoyed listening to this and it's given me food for thought. Thank you both :)

Your comment was expressed very thoughtfully, and I agree. I have met a lot of people professionally and personally who do not love themselves. Most often this was because of some type of abuse or neglect. It’s far more nuanced than what can be easily distilled down into a chapter in a book. I am sure there are people who turn the idea of loving yourself or self care into a form of narcissism, but for many it’s part of a journey of healing.

We are created in the image of God. Why would we be commanded to love everyone else but not ourselves? Loving self does not mean being self-centered or always putting self first. It means recognizing that as the creation of the Almighty we have value to that creator and can through him do as Jesus did and offer our lives in self-sacrificing love. It's very hard to do that unless you first recognize God loves you, and how can you love less than God?

There is a difference between self love and personal responsibility, that recognizes your calling as a child of God is to serve. Sure there are people who hate themselves and they need help, but not to love themselves! They need to NoT HATE anything but sin. You can be ambivalent about yourself and instead be devoted to God and others, and you will be fulfilled because you aren't focusing on yourself (which you end up doing whether you love or hate yourself)

Can you two have a discussion on judgement, wrath and violence in OT? I get that God needs to punish and stop evil, or he wouldn’t be good. But punishment that doesn’t fit the crime, for example hell that lasts for an eternity I- I just can’t accept and is not the Jesus that I have experienced. Also I suffer from extreme anxiety about the salvation of my family and loved ones. I’m having trouble fully trusting a God who lets all this evil continue on earth and then is planning on continuing it in a hell through eternity. I love the spirit and truth of God in both of you, Sean and Alisa. I have never said this before but I’ve always wondered how truth that is so obvious is altered and embraced by people. The question I have is, how can something that is so clearly wrong, Or clearly right be rejected and replaced by someone else’s “truth”. Romans 1:24-28 comes to mind but is there something more to man that Blinds him and binds him from seeing and enjoying what is true, honorable and noble?

And in John, Jesus says, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: _And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die._ Believest thou this? And in Matthew & Mark, Jesus said unto them, _He is the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob: God is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living:_ ye therefore do greatly err. Side note: I like how Jesus says things. "You therefore do GREATLY err." Ha. He's so cool. Bye, be blessed.

In a court of law you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. That's important. You don't have the whole picture of the truth without all of those elements. When you say that there's no such thing as "my truth", you may be incorrect. Many of us were raised in extreme fundamentalist Christianity and all of what we were taught was based on someone's version of "truth". For example, people like Michael and Debi Pearl are fond of quoting Malachi 2:16 as a basis for claiming that if an abused wife divorces her husband, she is sinning because "God hates divorce." If you read the entire chapter you realize that verse 2:16 does, in fact, say that God hates divorce, but that verse has zero to do with prohibiting abused wives from divorcing their abusers. The Pearls, who are admired by many are creating their own truth. Most Christians I know, both those who are of ill intent and those who are sincerely trying to follow Jesus develop their own version of truth. If that were not the case then there would be a single Christian denomination that we all agree on. Which is true, no trinity or a trinity? Which is true, every word in the Bible is factual and literal, or some of the Bible is metaphorical or even taken from pagan sources? Which is true, arminianism or predestination? The truth that I believe is that's why Jesus boiled it down to just two things: love God above all else and love your neighbor as you love yourself. Weigh your thoughts, your truth and your deeds against these two in order to live and love like Jesus.

Judgement according to Jesus, meant condemnation, which only God will do. But discernment is necessary and growing to have the mind of Christ, and regarding Galatians 6:1 is discernment with the guidance of His Spirit. Why we need to tell others that they are wrong, is not necessary very often, unless we are confessing our sins to each other and then praying for one another. Pastors and elders are usually more in the position to confront. In marriage, we help each other, to know what is best according to God.

You can't have your own truth, which is why truth is only what can be proven by science. If something can not be proven scientifically then it is just a theory, an opinion, a belief, a religion and not a truth. If something is "true" just to your religious group, then it is merely "your truth", and not "the truth", which isn't any better than each individual having their own "truth".

So vulnerable narcissism is actually a kind of self hatred. There is no need to let our cultural moment warp scripture. Loving others as we love ourselves is just fine as it is written. I don't think trying to challenge culture by making stumbling blocks is the move. Christians shouldn't fear when the world has a touch point with scripture, but to use that subtlety to draw people to God. Frankly, the mentality of culture paranoia is where we get folks saying drums are sinful, dancing is dangerous, tv is evil, etc. Jesus isn't here to win your culture war, you are here to be a part of His.

I am come that you might have life in all its fulness. The spirit brings us true fulfilment. 1Cor.12 talks about our individuality (which we can be true to) serving the health of others also. "Objective truth" is not a biblical category. Show me the mathematical and scientific proofs in scripture. "Some people observe the sabbath, others don't". This is confusing western philosophy with biblical teaching. People who have claimed certainty, have also done much damage (including Christians). So if loving ourselves narcissism? Our Lord saves ONLY the faithful members of His Body and, if those who do not belong to His Body, even if they say "Lord, Lord", they will hear "I never knew you, depart from Me you evil doers (Matt 7:22-23)." I think Alisa misinterprets how "You are enough" came to be a quote/meme in society. The reality is that there are images of mothers who appear perfect-they are well kept, athrletic looking, always on top of everything-the house is well maintained, the children are happy and well adjusted, etc. However, this is seldom the case for most women who are becoming mothers-they do gain weight, they struggle to find healthy coping mechanisms or support systems. They aren't always on top of things. The quote "You are enough" means that you don't need to be some sort of Tick Tock rockstar or commercial mom in order to be a good mom, and that figuring out how to navigate this world is tough and looks messy and isn't easy. When a mom wakes up each day trying to figure out how to get through that day, the last thing they need to care about is trying to live up to someone else's image of who they should be, some sort of highly unachieveable and unhelthy way of being. "You are enough" means that you, as you are, are ok. Alisa otherwise does a good job of putting Christian values on largely humanistic ones. Nice job.

True. But given the fact that no two preachers or pastors agree completely on how to interpret the Bible, every single Christian has their own interpretation of their faith. This highlights the need for unifying creeds. There is so much division in the Christian church - the church needs revelation. Jesus said that any kingdom divided against itself will not stand. But noone wants to take that as talking about their church or their doctrinal views... It started with the Great Schism and we have just been adding more and more ism's ever since... Hmmm... ism - independent sectarian movements. The Catalysm of the Kingdom of Heaven... A creed to bring us together.

I don't get it. You can't rely on your own truth: therefore you have to rely on someone else's truth. But you still have to make your own judgement about which truth to follow. So it seems that you are still following your own perception of the truth. Paul's definition of being enslaved seemed to the assertion of any opinion which conflicted with his. In Galatians he appears to be saying:" don't believe anyone but me. And if I change my mind in the future don't keep believing in me." In other words, "My theological opinions are absolute truth." It is interesting that if you put four Christian theologians in a room together you will most probably get four different opinions.

So when you say “Christianity” is different from other religions, I’d say in 22,000 instances, it’s different from itself.
