To this day, no single-player FPS campaign has left the same impact as the HALO CE campaign left for me (I played it when I was only 10 years old, and have played most of the other games on this list as an adult).

I played through six Halo games but I played through the entire Halo CE campaign FOUR times.

Unfortunately just a fact of getting older. You've seen more, so it takes more to impress you. It's not that CE had that great of a campaign, there have been much better to come out. But it's just that, at the time, it did things that nobody had really seen before, and that's what we remember feeling. Although I suppose it's twofold in that devs have also become scared to experiment, so we rarely see innovation that would impress us anyway.

Explain how a game can innovate in this modern era... In truth we've peaked and there really is nowhere to go but back and do it better - this is why we're seeing so many remasters and remakes. We can be more brave in the stories that we tell (controversial...) or we strip back and refine the big ideas, the huge open worlds and the ubisoft formula and tell smaller more intimate stories. ​@@ledumpsterfire6474

I re-played through all the Halo games recently. Jeez, the time I spent on those games years ago ! Like you I remember CE being amazing at the time but this time around found it far too repetitive. Still really enjoyed Halo 2 and 3 though. I'm knocking on a bit now and just can't find a game that impresses me. When you were there at the beginning of gaming all the rest that follow are just variations of the same thing from FPSs to racing games. Its all been done before.

Killzone 2 MP was a new take on game types, the map switching game modes without stopping and reloading new maps. Going from team deathmatch to headquarters to flag battles etc Good times 😎

World at war not just single player but multiplayer as well was the most rounded of all the call of duty games the best thing the accuracy you pulled the trigger and knew you hit the target before your bullet did not like the crap we get now.

Some not mentioned: Painkiller black edition, shadow warrior 2, Fallout new vegas, Trepang2. Also the bioshock games (which I don't like but many others do) New vegas has the best story and worldbuilding out of any FPS in my opinion. Wolfenstein the new order is a close second, albeit with less replayability. I'd give third to CoD world at war or black ops 1 & 2.

VR is the last thing Killzone needs as the player base is still too limited. Honestly I’m shocked that Sony hasn’t done anything with the IP in over 10 years, because we need someone after Shadow Fall, that was a letdown.

4 definitly had the most character development. None of the other games feature any character development besides maybe halo 2 with arbiter starting to see the covenant as frauds
