"Let's Read" is my favourite channel, for his voice. Some other channels are also my favourite but no one has a voice as good as Joel's for story telling. His voice is smooth yet he tells every story as if he was truly there, wich makes it so much more realistic and it pulls you in to the story. He really does a wonderful job and i've been binging. Oh god when I was a kid a family that lived in a rental my dad owned just disappeared... They had paid so we didn't notice for a while... It was so creepy... Cereal bowls with spoons still at the table, Dead dog tied up out back, a teddy bear on the stairs, bread dough everywhere, the radio playing and for some really weird reason the bottom 3 basement stairs were missing... I was only 12, but it was reported to police, they apparently found no evidence of a crime... Never heard from the family again.. my dad cashed a rent check months later (cleared) not because he wanted the money but because the suspense was killing him, he was sure something weird or terrible happened.. he waited a few years but the home was a bio hazard and a danger at that point so he plowed the house into the ground... They didn't ditch dad for rent so what happened?? They either went on the run or were killed I guess... It was a family of 4.. but I've never seen any missing persons report or bodies found that match what I remember, I especially remember their daughter because she was just a couple years older than me... That's what I think of when I think of abandoned buildings 😳

I actually think some narrators edit their content the other way around, in the effort to make it "hip" or "edgy". Some of their content is so prolific with literary profanity its difficult to believe ppl write their about their experiences in such a manner. I mean, really? Every story? (i.e. Corpse Husband) Therefore also difficult to listen to for any length of time. I guess Im "old school". Whatever the case, If ppl do write it that way, I appreciate Joel's effort to edit out the unnecessary expletives. He's top class in every way.

For all those, who like to explore underground places. H2S is FREAKIN DEATHBRINGER because of its ability to immediately desensitize your smell receptors in high concentrations. Sometimes it is enough to inhale it 2-3 times to completely lost consciousness, and you know what? If you don't have someone equipped with a closed cycle rebreather, or you aren't tied up with an emergency cord with someone outside to pull you out, you are dead. Emergency rescue teams are not an option, since it is matter of minutes, or even seconds when one in H2S cloud would die. There are two ways to check if it is safe down there: 1. Gas analyzer (reliable and safe); 2. Little fire, like a match e.g. (extremely dangerous as there are flammable gasses as well, and unreliable). Think thrice before you go.

I was listening to some of Joel's backlogs of paranormal stuff last night, when one peaked my interest. It was (I think, because I was in and out of restless sleep all night) about a girl whose room mate was, well, cuckoo. The basic description of her antics were as follows. “ She accused me of killing her fish, accused me of sleeping with her boyfriend and watched me sleeping”. That's Chandler's room mate! THAT IS Eddie Menuek. F.R.I.E.N.D.S fans, back me up here, tell me you'd be thinking the same. The only thing she didn't do was shrink some fruit in a dehydrator.

Where i grew up was an abandoned soldiers and sailors home. That included an orphanage. It had a lot of beautiful old buildings. The hospital and the old school were the creepiest parts. Also where we ran into other people. There was also a huge auditorium. Someone had painted a 6 pointed star in the middle of the stage. There were dead chickens. Goddamn, this was really, really good. I used to do this type of stuff when I was a kid in the early 90’s, but there wasn’t a lot to explore where I live. The coolest place we found was an old house with the 2nd story collapsed down onto the first story for about half of the house. We started referring to it as the Amish house, I can’t remember the origin of the name tbh. This place must have been used for storage because we found all kinds of bizarre crap in there. There were some coin operated toy machines full of stuff, all kinds of ammo reloading equipment and a ton of black and smokeless powder we used to blow stuff up later, some bottles of liquor which were as good as finding gold at that time, I can’t remember what else, this was almost 30 years ago now. We checked out some old factories, very old actually, shut down for at least 30 years, the floors above the ground floor were all wood and in bad shape, we had some close calls in there I was terrified to even walk around in there as I have always been big for my age I weighed as much as the average adult even at the age of 12. They ended up tearing one of the buildings down after we started frequenting it, my friends got chased out of that house I mentioned, I wasn’t there that day. I explored quite a few old houses. One was really old, must have been abandoned for 40-50 years and still had most of the stuff inside. There was this big grand piano in the living room and the living room had a big picture Windows, we shoved that piano out that window from the 2nd floor and my god that made a lot of noise when it hit 😆 I’m not particularly proud of that, my friend and I were in the midst of a Pantera obsession and we enjoyed emulating them by smashing stuff. That place got torn down shortly after that. I think we were the catalyst to many of the old buildings coming down to prevent kids from getting hurt. Nothing else stands out at the moment...

I remember the police and child welfare coming into the house I lived in, I rented a room there. Another roommates ex boyfriend had called im her for something and they came in and looked everywhere for her, including in my room and under my bed. They said that the boyfriend accused us of having a Meth lab in our living room, maybe they thought the sign on the door into the living room that said keep door shut meant there was a lab in there idk there was only another person sleeping on the couch. I have volunteered as an outreach worker in harm reduction and fentanyl is a huge problem. There is also a lot of stigma attached to meth users that simply aren't true. Bad or missing teeth is one of them. Some users out there have better teeth than a non user because they take care of their teeth. Meth causes cravings for sugary foods and drink and when combined with not taking care of teeth... You get horribly decayed teeth. If you read this you just learned something.

An interesting place to explore is Central Iowa. Especially Des Moines. I don’t exactly mean just abandoned areas but curious areas. Especially if you have to walk all over a lot, and rely solely on your own 2 legs. The Downtown area has all sorts of twists and turns that are often strange, forgotten, creepy and just interesting. What’s more is the Skywalk System. It’s a System I never even try to use because it’s extremely confusing to me how you can seem to start at one point, get lost, and not even be able to find the way you come in. Well that was my experience anyway. Years and Years ago. It could just be a thing unique to myself I suppose but I swear there are certain ways and alleys outside as well that are the definition of breaking physics. If you learn the right bends or turns you can find yourself saving hours on a walk- if you get it down right. An example is a walk from the middle of DM that taking main streets would take hours, usually 3 hour walk, can only take an hour taking the sketchy alleys and the right turns. At night time it’s really creepy taking this shortcut, it feels and in a way is very unsafe due to the risk of encountering the wrong people, yet if you don’t take this shortcut, which leads you through dark alleys at night through isolation, well you hope it’s isolated anyway.. what’s strange and ironic is if you don’t take this path your really actually gambling your safety. The alternative to get to the south side from downtown involves walking on a narrow bridge high in traffic, where there are neither railing or a walkway and the drop down is a good multiple stories above a railway and the river. To get over the river without risking some accident, surely fatal, you actually have to follow the alleys following the bridge from below. Eventually you find an old metal fire escape type staircase that goes up toward halfway and turns into a walkway, it’s out of time. Feels like your not supposed to be doing it. Idk it’s strange

Scary? More like embarrassingly average situations that scared these cop calling bed wetters so badly that (in the final story) they run in terror from some guys with a meth pipe. If they had learned about urbex from a source besides dora the explorer, perhaps they’d have known encounters with bums and dopers is a possibility, if not likely. It’s ironic that the methheads that became subjects in a situation that the author called “the scariest thing that ever happened “ are actually the true veterans of urbex, and it was probably their nameless ‘hobby‘ long before hipsters and wussies came along with their need to post cellphone vids (taken on phones that have grandma and all local emergency services setup on 1 touch speed dial) so they can validate themselves and feel cool and edgy.
