A popular design of European origin is the carrack (or they are called nao or сoсa). The carrack featured anywhere from three to four masts, dominating ship designs until it was superseded by the galleon in the 16th century...

@@kroumbatchvarov-archaeologist Believe me, the pleasure is mine. I have the chance to discover and learn from the videos of the Batchvarov clan which you are generous enough to share. Change of subject, I have a question for the Vasa expert and enthusiast that you are. I saw a video recently about Vasa, and I have doubts about its veracity. The video claims that when he was taken out of the water, a miraculously preserved corpse was found and even his brain could be reconstructed. Is this true or fake?

Perhaps the extra rudders where for military redundancy. If the main rudder had been destroyed or fouled in battle the others could be deployed. Just an idea. Happy New Year!

This is an interesting hypothesis! It could Be. However the galleys of Flanders were merchant ships.

thank you for the video. hope you could continue the series, into the northern style, and the later ships. what do we know, what is surviving. early galeons, models of mayflower, revenge, golden hind ect.

Mayflower, Golden Hind, Revenge fall under the speculation category, of course, but we do have information about vessels of this period, thanks to archaeology. So I certainly would be interested in producing such a video. Thank you for the idea and for watching!

Dear Doctor Batchvarov, happy new year to you and Olga! Your channels are two of my most valuable sources of inspiration. Health and success to you in the new year! Thank you so much for the vodeo! The first two parts were very interesting and educational. I'm looking forward to the third part. Could you possibly share there your opinion on whether the Santa Maria could have belonged to any of the known types of Mediterranean ships from the 15th century? It's important to consider that this vessel needed to be capable of oceanic voyages, not just coastal or inland navigation. Also, as an archaeologist, how do you think the Santa Maria was designed and what might it have looked like?

Thank you so much for the kind words. A Happy New Year to you and may it bring Victory over the Empire of Evil and its orcs! Santa Maria was known as a nao- ship. It would have been a derivative of the Mediterranean cocha. Two words for essentially the same type of ship. You may recall that she was hired to the crown on the southern coast of Spain, in the Mediterranean. How was she designed is an interesting question, but in the absence of archaeological evidence of sea-going ships in Spain from this period, this would be mere speculation. It is exactly agains speculation that I was ranting in my Santa Maria video :-), so I would rather not indulge in it myself. Likely some sort of whole-moulding was used. We may be better placed to speculate after Gribshunden is excavated, documented and reconstructed

Hello Dr. Batchvarov, a Happy New Year and indeed Victory over the orcs! Thank you for the two interesting videos. I have a question about the lateen-sail. On many shipmodels with lateen-sails, the yard is set either under the shrouds or over the shrouds. Did you have any source, about the handling of the lateen-yard? Greetings from Germany!
