Hi! I am so excited to have stumbled upon your channel. This is such a great resource for those of us trying to learn medical Spanish in order to better serve our Spanish-speaking patients. I am a 4th year medical student applying to General surgery residency programs and I also lead a medical Spanish course for the Latino Medical Student Association, where junior medical students come to learn how to perform a basic medical history in Spanish. I have shared your channel with all of our members! I am a native Spanish-speaker, however, none of my family is academic. So, I am on a journey this year to perfect my Spanish with a focus on medical Spanish that will help with my surgical patient encounters. I watched your medical procedures video and it was great! It would be very helpful for me if you could make a video on common surgical operations such as gallbladder. and appendix removals, and hernia repairs, etc. Thank you so much for making these videos!

Glad to find this. I am in nursing school and I want to find some more tools like this. I am having trouble finding some Spanish instruction for the medical office. Specifically, as it pertains to taking a medical history, interviewing a patient, and taking vital signs. Any recommendations?

Hi Jlynn, thanks for the note. Here is a lesson we taught on HPI a few years ago: commongroundinternational.com/medical-spanish/oldcarts-spanish-history/ If you're ready to take an actual course, here are two options: 1. fully asynchronous course on medical histories in Spanish: commongroundinternational.com/courses/medical-history-spanish/ 2. hybrid synchronous & asynchronous Mastering Medical Spanish course: commongroundinternational.com/courses/mastering-medical-spanish/ Cheers,

@@CommonGroundInternational This is very helpful I am enrolling in the course right away. I have another question and I kind of feel like this is a dumb question, but this course is going to give me all the tools I need to speak to my patients, but what about understanding their replies? It probably would be most beneficial to ask closed questions because obviously it's easy to understand si or no. Is there instruction in this horse or elsewhere in your Arsenal of tools to teach me how to understand the most common replies to some of the questions said that are not a yes or no answer? For example if I ask a patient is diabetes runs in their family and the give me a list of blood relatives who have it, how will I understand their response? Asking the questions does no good if you don't understand the answers.

@@jlynnd1616 not a dumb question at all - a great question. Here are a few thoughts: 1. Getting used to creating yes/no questions is a great strategy to begin with and one that allows you to connect with your patients right away as you work on #s 2 & 3 below. 2. All of our courses include heavy vocabulary development because as you aptly point out, you only get so far if you ask a question like "¿Qué síntomas tiene? and you don't know any common symptom words in Spanish to follow along with the answer. The great reality is that even just knowing vocabulary helps you follow along and improves your comprehension. So don't underestimate the value of targeted vocabulary building to aid your comprehension. 3. Of course the fastest and most real-world way to build your comprehension is through guided practice speaking and listening. So, a conversation partner is a great strategy to put all this in practice. Many people also find podcasts, youtube and movies helpful as well. I would rather see you listen in Spanish and read captions in Spanish as well - don't listen in Spanish and read English subtitles (or vice versa)... that's less effective.

Very impressive! :-) Good for you! Just one thing to share with you, "Baja la regla" in Puerto Rico, (my Puerto Rican people can correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the way my family has taught it to me) that sentence would be looked upon like slang/inappropriate. The proper way, in PR Spanish, would be "y asi menstrua" or "cais con la menstruacion" accents over the "o" in menstruacion. (also, Baja = come down)
