It seems like the usual example of a GM trying too hard to beat someone he felt he "should" beat. I expect Carlsen would have grabbed the bishop pair on the first opportunity, happily accepting the two bishops plus a space advantage, and settled in for a long squeeze. Instead Nigel tried to keep the position unbalanced, probably hoping his less experienced opponent would make a mistake somewhere along the way. But she didn't.

I really enjoy these positions where you trade off a rook for a minor piece with pawn majority, etc. Us mortals are so used to play with exchanging equal amount of piece values (rooks for rooks, queen for queen, etc.). Us lower rated players have to engage into these kinds of imbalances and relatively equal material or dynamic positions. This was a brilliant game, reminds me of AlphaZero's playing style.

Nigel was actually one of my favorite players back in the day. I like his style. He once said, "All this talk of pawn structure. Mate ends the game!". He has some pretty good attacking games. Would like to see Antonio look at a couple of those. His King Walk came against Jan Timman is one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. 3 times British Champion. 3 time Commonwealth Champion. He beat a murderers row of candidates to earn a shot at the world title. He was destroyed by Kasparov, but who wasnt at that time? He beat Boris Gelfand, Jonathan Speelman, Anatoly Karpov and Timman. Ranked as high as # 4 in the world at one time. Not as strong as he once was and I'll tell you there has been a slew of these 17 and 18 year olds winning big games and titles now, its crazy.

@@clashcanada8845 Dude. My rating is like 1200 on lichess, and so is lost peoples ratings. These are GM level games, but even if they weren't there would still be plenty of awesome chess in them far beyond what I can do. She is also stronger than both Gotham chess and agadmator, which I'm sure you have no trouble respecting.

Wouldnt queen to g3 work also in the paused position? Checking king, then taking the pawn (checking again), followed by the bishop. Then black is up a pawn and a rook to a knight even after losing the passing pawn (which would be white's obvious next move). I guess the game might take a little longer this way but seems like would be the same outcome.

Queen to g3 is good (then white K to F1)but after Q captures pawn at H2 giving check to King, the king may move to e2.Bishop cannot be captured though because the black rook at d3 will be hanging.

@ 5:43 why not Kf2 followed by Qe2, so that Queens can be exchanged, which is advantageous to White? and many moves can be saved by White

Short has just recovered from covid and had it fairly bad (hospitalized, wasn't on a ventilator but was on supplemental oxygen). Covid seems to have negative cognitive effects on many people. He has played weakly in that entire tournament (being saves by a cell phone buzz DQ in a losing position against a player under 2000).

5:03 instead of Bf2, Bf6 is also possible with the intention of Qc3 attack on the knight and g7 (mate). Stockfish gives all these variations ~0.00

8:39 what's wrong with Q to G3? Whichever square the king goes to, Q takes the pawn with check, followed by taking the bishop, thereby killing the mate-threat as well as double-teaming the knight.

Short has a bit a history with the Bulgarian team. Cheparinov refused to shake Short's hand at a tournament, because Short insulted him in an interview.
