I wonder how they figured specs way back in 1938? I started watching your channel because of the video you did on the Elmore and was hoping to see more on it. Its engine design is one of the most interesting and I'd love to see a compete tear-down and rebuild with specs and data.
@claytoresto
@claytoresto 4 жыл бұрын
I have limited video on the Elmore. It is a very unique engine design. I wish I could just do the video's and talk about design, engineering and alike. It would be so cool and fun. But I'm a working stiff and have to keep my day job. And I have no spare time lately because I am finishing my house and shops. I have decided to put my place up for sale and things are not done. Working 16 hour days to get things tidied up. But i'm not quitting restoring cars (and doing the video's). I'm planning on building a new facility on my families ranch. I want to move further away from the city. I'll get back to the video's

Having recently found your channel I really enjoyed the model A Victoria restoration. Ep8 was the last I watched. Are you going to get back to build? I'm 72 in the 60's I was a bodyman for Chevrolet and enjoy your workmanship.

@@claytoresto Please post upholstery videos - I've got a few '30 - '32 Packards that are needing everything, wood, body, mechanical, and upholstery. There are plenty of channels showing work on newer cars, but have not seen much with the wood working and upholstery and your vids are much better than any of the others I've seen - guess they are the same quality as your restorations - top notch!! Please, more vids - you are starving us...

Thank You. This gives me some reference for (formerly)my 1937 Packard 6. (Factory rated at 100 HP and 200 pounds torque.) What is the best HP and torque @ rpm on your dyno for this test.
@claytoresto
@claytoresto 4 жыл бұрын
I know it made 120HP and had 105-110 compressions. I'll have to look at the torques figures.

Are those numbers about the same as what this engine would have made when new? It doesn't seem like much now, but I imagine it was pretty powerful for it's time.
@claytoresto

I'm sorry for the incomplete video. I will set down and make something that is more informative. The book says the peak HP is 100. We are more than that for several reasons. One is bigger bores and we had 105-110 pounds of compression. The other reason I think is the weather station was correcting the numbers more than usual. I need to calibrate them again. I would expect 5-10% over book, but not 20%.

I didnt see the air/fuel on the screen ? Do you use a a/f sensor for tuning the carb and engine?
@claytoresto
@claytoresto 4 жыл бұрын
Yes we do. The sensor on the dyno is unreliable, so we use a Snap-On unit. You can see it to the right of the monitor. You absolutely have to have this information to properly tune the carburetor.

You said in relation to the numbers "it is what it is", were you expecting higher numbers? Please explain
@claytoresto
@claytoresto 4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry for the incomplete video. I will set down and make something that is more informative. When we dyno an engine, we start off by just breaking in for an hour or two and just try to tune it best as possible. Then we start to put loads to it and make the usual pulls. We have found after about 15-20 pulls it has been tuned to peak HP and the pulls stabilize out and the runs are all almost the same. Thus, it is now what it is. Tuning will not make any higher numbers, compressions have stabilized and thus will not yield and higher numbers. So time to quit and pu it in the car.
