As the son of a former hairdresser and someone who's obsessed with vintage hairstyling, it's actually the best tip sadly enough, most of what makes those styles look right is a mix of having the right haircut with an appropriate perm, a proper wet set and a skillful comb through, if any or several of these is not achieve the style won't last as well and will always look "somehow too modern, but you can't put you finger on why"

My grandmother would go to the hairdresser once a week, wash, set, and style. Then she would maintain that look until she went to her hairdresser again. Every Thursday. ❤

You look FABULOUS. Both my grandmothers wore their hair very similar to what you've styled today. I never imagined it to be so much work, but yes they had what seemed like THOUSANDS of bobby-pins. Also, I ADORE the music you play from intro to the end. Wow. A true throwback. Job well done young lady ❤️

Haha SO many bobby pins. Honestly, it's only about 20 minutes of work on hair setting day and then another 20 brushing it out, so it doesn't seem like that much to do! But it takes getting used to! And thank you! I love that song - it reminds me of my grandma!

Back in the day, those were called, pin curls, go figure. Mom would make the sides of my hair, by my ear, where the hair was short, and they were SPIT curls. You can imagine why they were called that. Flat beer was the method of the day, and less expensive then the mousses we now have. I decided several years ago, to cut my hair in a "pixy" short, wash and wear.

Back in my teens and 20 my hair would curl with hot rollers and curling irons beautifully then i turned 30 and I started to get naturally curly hair that I could just pin curl and it would look amazing. Then I turned 40 and nothing worked except straight and I wanted to cry. I do know that my Grandmother used beer for something but she never said what and she passed away before I though to ask so i was trying to use it as a rinse. But mystery is solved. I know that it will take time to retrain my hair and it will be easier with time. However I will be using flat beer to set the curls caz i have been looking for setting lotion or spray that my Mother used on my hair in the 70s when she would rag curl my pin straight hair into Shirley Temple curls. And I can't find what I have been looking for. I am almost willing to bet that she was reusing an old bottle ( it was from the 50s early 60s and hot pink) with stale beer in it. She wouldn't of told me what it was even if I had thought to ask since I was under 7 years old. After that I was obsessed with braids and wanted hair to the floor so i could braid it and wrap it around my head like the cellist who played at church who was in her 90s. And i still think it would be amazing to have such thickness in my older age and past my feet.

My sister and i were talking about hairstyles we had as kids in the 50s and 60s, and mom and grandmas hair. Both mom and grandma would go to the hairdresser once a week. It was an all day event, well ,ind of, for ladies who worked outside the home. They wluld have a brush out, wash, cut, set and style. At night they would put toilet paper all around their hair, then put a snood, like a mesh scarf hair net, over that. It must have been hard to sleep cuz i dont think they could really turn much. Moms head would get itchy and she would use the end of a rat tail comb to scratch her head. That would drive me nuts.

Oh NO! That's super discouraging! I would definitely start with the most gentle things first - water, pillow rollers, pins, etc; foam rollers are generally pretty good but you have to make sure your ends don't tangle or twist.

@WithLoveKristina3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, how much hair are you curling in each curler? It could be they're too loose? I know a lot of my long-haired friends have to use a LOT of curlers with minimal hair in each in order to get a set that stays.
@rainbowsprinkles22543 жыл бұрын
@@WithLoveKristina I might try that..I only do about an inch to 1&1/2 per roller..I run the brush through twice and the curl is just gone like the wind😹they're tight but not too tight when I roll them...I've used the foam rollers and done regular pin curls in some spots just to see what works better and I have the same outcome with both
