Steve1989 MREinfo here, hello everyone! This time, we are checking out a WW2 Canadian "Food Container" from 1945. This thing was notorious back then for being the most awful (and memorable) Ration eaten by the Canadian Troops - and now we are peering back in time to something that those poor guys had to eat then. And I get to eat it now!
Watch me eat the oldest ever recorded (as of January 25th, 2016) chocolate, and biscuits!
I ended up eating more than half of this Ration - actually the camera cut off for 4 of the biscuits, but I at most of those. And half of one of the 71 year old chocolate bars, and one of the two 6-count chocolate tablet packs. It was quite an experience!

Steve, I have to thank you for the respect you've shown our Canadian boys (including my late Grandfather) who fought in WW2 and had to eat those horrible HORRIBLE rations in the field. I think you probably choked down more of those WW1-leftover biscuits then most of the troops were able to when they were 70 years fresher. And you ate them without water, just like the boys had to more often then not! Mad props to you. Also yes, that chocolate was notoriously bad according to my grandpa. It was even more insulting since it was made by Cadbury who makes some of the best 'mass market' chocolate in the world today and even then. But they were no better then Hershey at making 'non-melting' chocolate that would taste decent.

My grand father was an ethnic Lithuanian junior officer with the Prussian Army during WW1 in Russia. He said they sometimes had to eat a stew made from dried peas and dried ground fish meal. The white stuff that forms on the outside of chocolate is cocoa butter. It separates when chocolate is shelved for awhile or exposed to heat. Cocoa butter in this state (AKA a 'fat bloom') is not generally harmful. However, chocolate can eventually spoil, so maybe don't swallow next time...?

Rations came into production around the mid 40s. People usually just cooked their food in pots before then. But if it was possible, that be awesome.

+Klondike “Ackbar” Allahu The US actually did have WW1 rations and were even used on Guadalcanal in WW2, but by that time, they were hard as a brick.
