Witness this classic food storage discovery! Eating the oldest peanut butter was not what I was expecting that night when filming this. Hope you enjoy this Vintage MRE Review!

Hello, everyone!
This time, we have 2 B-Unit cans from a very rare Post-Korean War-era Ration, Combat, Individual (RCI) up for review.
We try out the crackers, jam, cocoa beverage, and most notably - eating half of a can of that 61 year old peanut butter - what has to be by far the oldest recorded peanut butter ever eaten!
About 21 hours later right now, and I am just fine. Had indigestion, and slightly low energy today, but the energy part probably derived from a complete & utter lack of proper rest, as per usual whilst making these YT videos. It's more than worth it for your enjoyment
These cans are approximately twice the dimensional height of the well known MCI (Meal, Combat, Individual, or dubbed: C-Ration) of the Vietnam War-era.
These were bulky, inefficient in stowing in packs, and heavy.
The production of RCI's was from 1950-1958 and then production ceased and were replaced with the MCI in 1959. Units were allocated and utilized to troops until stocks were depleted.
Hope you folks like the video!
Oh, and I wrote that intro music, I have a ton of tunes I composed and am thinking of adding some to the videos from time to time.
-Steve

PS, thanks to Charles Sweitzer, I have a little background on that Cinderella Packaging Company:
The old Cinderella Peanut Butter plant is now occupied by Golden Peanut Company. The company just did a $18-20 million investment and is now refining its own peanut oil. The company no longer produces the Cinderella Peanut Butter in Dawson and they will be demolishing the old facility soon as the new facility is up and running.

When I was a kid, my Dad would buy canned rations whenever we went on a long hiking or camping trip. He was adamant that we have some kind of can opener and even taught me how to use the kind on my Swiss Army knife. I always asked why when the cans already had an opener on them. He would roll his eyes at me and say, "Just do what I tell you." Now I know why.

When you pulled out that peanut butter can I thought "Oh wow, time to find out if peanut butter really does last forever." I'm 44 and I've been eating peanut butter sandwiches my whole life and I have never seen peanut butter go bad. Ever. The fact that the 61 year old peanut butter was still perfectly good was something I thought was awesome. Supposedly honey is the only food that doesn't spoil; honey found in the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs has been tasted by archeologists and found edible.

I had to walk 3 miles the next day to the pharmacy, in pain and out of breath, through some sketchy neighborhoods to get to Walgreens, while eses in the hood postured aggressively towards me just walking down the street. Steve, Great video. I admire your gastronomic bravery. Might I suggest, if you ever come across another PB can, do not pore off the oil. Peanut is essential in peanut butter. Natural PB will separate the way your can did in storage. Nothing abnormal about that. The GI's in the field experience the same thing with new cans. Now days PB manufacturers add emulsifiers and junk to keep it from separating. Might I suggest mixing the oil into the PB until it becomes creamy. It will greatly improve the taste. Also, they did not put as much sugar in PB back then. The definitely did not use corn syrup. So the taste may not be as sweet as a jar of Skippy.

+Steve1989 MREinfo I just found your channel and I havent looked around yet to answer my own question but have you reviewed any airplane crash landing survival packs? My guard unit threw away 1000's of them. I saved a few but it mostly have very cheaply made survival stuff, like wire saws that would break trying to cut a twig and fish hooks that couldn't catch a minnow without the hook bending. They were from around 2000-2003 and they came in a hard plastic case maybe 5in by 5 inch by 2 in deep. Great stuff man! I will dig around and see if I have any MRE's laying around and send them to ya but I am pretty sure my old roommate ate all of them a long time ago.

It is really nice to see the amount of viewers growing, the comment section is also filled with new names. And you totally deserve it, and I really mean it. After all, who would be crazy enough to eat all this stuff!!!

I really like these videos. My dad was in the army so we used to eat the rations from his packs. My sister and I loved it. Please continue doing what you do, these reviews are amazing. I feel like I'm tasting these rations from your descriptions. Hahaha.

Ever had natural peanut butter? It always separates. Still good.

Yes that's what I was going to say. It's normal for the oil to separate from natural pb. You always have to stir it. So that in itself doesn't mean it's bad.

The cocoa is supposed to be crushed by hand into the cup. It would have worked better that way. However, the flavor? Hard to say if any of it was ever very tasty. It is interesting to see the amount of design work that went into that and it was still ungainly. Also, I wonder how many soldiers became casualties from the jagged edges of the cans!
