Check out this WW2 Field Ration D. An emergency "MRE" of sorts used by US soldiers during the war as a meal supplement or replacement. A 4 ounce chocolate bar with raw oat flour added to raise the melting temperature of the chocolate from 90 degrees Fahrenheit up to 120 degrees so it could be used in tropical climates. A notorious chocolate bar being knows as hardly edible even when hungry - so does it live up to the hype? Or is it really not all that bad? Find out, because I eat the whole thing. No stomach aches occurred after this video either. I must be getting used to this stuff. Huge thanks to RC Gusto for sending his Wrigley's box (with 2 of the 6 squares of chocolate still in it!) last year - I am donating that empty box along with my empty box, and two full ones to Zephyrhills Museum of Military History - a local museum near me.
Here is a link to RC Gusto's fantastic review of his Wrigley's D Bar that he bought from a fellow out in Alaska. It was a fine example.

Steve I got a story for you. My father worked at the County dump. Trucks would pull up with surplus regularly. In the early 80s after years of these trucks pulling up my dad got to really know the drivers. We would get partially damaged TVs otherwise worked great for example. Sears drivers were told to take a hammer to the screens before dumping. My dad got them to just hand them over. He regularly would go to the flea market and sell anything he rescued. He did this with a verity of stores and goods. We lived well off of this alone. The Local Army Depot in Sacramento CA one day came in with a crap ton of MREs from the Second WW. This is 1983... he was in the Army Air Corp so he was already familiar with the food and how it would taste. He brought a truck load home for us to go through. For many months we, in 1983 lived off of these rations. We never found anything we couldn’t eat as designed. I ended up looked forward to the particular tastes. The little coffee packs I’d use every morning to deliver news papers. My dad had no porblem with his 14 year old drinking coffee. He loved the cigarettes. It was a great bonding time too. All the boxes looked brand new. They were stored very well. They were simply old. Almost 40 years old. I’d say I was lying if I didn’t live it. Love your channel.

My late grandfather was a WW2 Marine from 1942-46, Saipan, Guam, Okinawa, and China duty. He told me they sometimes went a week or two at a time eating little more than D-rations. From the end of the war until the day he died he never ate another chocolate bar again.

It's often said that chocolate was one of the most demoralizing weapons employed by America during WW2. When Germany didn't even have enough fuel for their tanks, America was flying chocolate halfway across the world. The Germans were well aware of this, and anytime they captured American supplies it was yet another reminder of Germany's shortcomings.
@EthanDyTioco
@EthanDyTioco 6 жыл бұрын
mosipd so, the Germans would envy the US raw material output and healthy logistics?
@mosipd

Absolutely, the German's had serious shortcomings when it came to supply and logistics, even Rommel would praise American equipment and supply capacity.
@Tombombadillo999
@Tombombadillo999 5 жыл бұрын
mosipd german ww2 equipment is the best of the period. Maybe in the tank department russian t34 were a cheaper choice. But weapon wise german had better stuff overall. U can still see nazi german technology today (ak47, rocket propulsion, mauser bolt action system, still loved to this day in hunting, etc)
@Tombombadillo999
@Tombombadillo999 5 жыл бұрын
mosipd oh also, mg42 technology used in the american m60, and the new german mg4. The original variant is still used to this day in italy, spain and few other countries. So i would say, over all the tech was superior, the issue was the supply ofcourse.

They had experience with guys eating the chocolates and candies from emergency rations when they weren't supposed to. A hungry GI is industrious. Making it slightly less palatable was genius behavior mod, to get them to eat the regular ration first.

That is why they created the fire modes on guns, so that soldiers would be more likely to use less ammunition. This is information I gathered a long time ago, so it may not be entirely accurate, but from what I can remember, during the Vietnam war, soldiers were using 10,000 rounds of ammunition per confirmed kill. So single fire and burst mode were added to weapons to hopefully decrease the use.
@Taylorphotostudio
@Taylorphotostudio 5 жыл бұрын
Necromancy For Kids that’s simply not true. Both the M14 and M16, the service weapons used in Vietnam, had single fire modes from the very beginning. Burst mode was added in the M16A2 because the Marine Corps wanted it.

Oh, man, I never thought I'd see those again. I guess someone in our Scout district was able to buy up hundreds of those chocolate bars. We had them for desert for lunch and dinner every day for nine days when I was Boy Scout in 1959. I literally got nauseous just looking at them at the end. It was a tasteless, cardboard flavor chocolate looking thing that didn't taste like chocolate at all. The bland and unappetizing flavor wasn't the worst though. Those things set off a round of flatulence like I've never heard (or smelled) before or since. When you're sleeping in a barracks with 20 other guys...well, let's just say we made sure all the windows were open. The stench was overwhelming.

I’m sure I’m not the first to have thought of this, but I think it would be so cool to find a couple WWII vets and do some of your videos with them. It might be wild to hear them reminisce about the rations and how they prepared or modified meals to their tastes.

I cannot tell you how much I enjoy your videos. I consider myself an "armchair historian." My father and I read books and compare notes and thoughts on military history all of the time. I am sure that many people watch your videos for the eating, and I must admit that there are times I am screaming in my head, "No!!! We don't really NEED to see that, Steve. Put it down!" What really fascinates me about your videos is how MUCH I have learned about military history from you! I so enjoy it, and my father has been watching your videos, too. Please keep up the AMAZING work that you do. I would even be keen on videos that take us through your display collection and discuss the military significance in history of the ration and how they evolved over time. Keep up the amazing work!!!
