Like the other guy said, on the first start of the day, get the pony motor running and warm enough to roll the diesel without stalling the pony out. Roll that diesel at a fast clip for 5 minutes or longer the put some heat in the diesel, the pony heats the coolant and a lot of them have their exhaust ducted through the intake manifold on the diesel to heat the air. After it’s run a decent amount of time, give the diesel some fuel, it should smoke white and then start after a minute or so. Turn the gas to the pony off and let it run dry to prevent gas from getting in the oil and ruining the pony. Never turn it off with the mag switch.

I always find it entertaining to read in the comment sections below where viewers condemn the use of starting fluid even though the old manufacture manuals from Cat and Euclid actually suggest it, especially in cold weather.

My father was part of developing a sand pit. Getting rid of all the overburden they had a D9 [with from memory hydraulics? ]and a near new Terex scraper. They got the D9 well and truly bogged,, to the radiator cap!! nose down. They found a wat spot! This around 1970. They dug around it then tried to pull it out with the scraper, than the scraper and the big Hough front end loader. It did not move.Eventually when the weather dried up,, like 3 months later they eventually got it out with another D9 plus the scraper and loader. It left a big squelchy hole! That noise from the pony engine,, I remember that from around the area as our semi rural area became semi metro. Dozers running on 2 sides of ut

I worked for a guy that had one about the same year ,it had a pony motor that he couldn't get parts for so he put a 4 cyl Ford motor from a pinto in it after a few months of setting the blade down on two chains at the end of the day and every morning we hook it up to 2 DM800 Mack's and tow start it,pulling on it lifted the blade,it usually started in 10 feet or less

Looks like an 18A CAT D9 direct drive, possibly a 19A with a torque converter drive but cannot see enough. 1956 will be the first year of manufacture.......in real nice condition, still a lot of work left in her, blade or scraper.

D 353 runs about 1200 rpm. Same engine as a 36 A or 46 A D-9, but they run1-2 hundred rm faster. Thus more hp. Looks like a direct drive making it an 18A. We had one we used farming . It would pull a train of implements at 4 mph.

Never, ever, EVER use starting fluid on a diesel engine that has a pony motor. The pony motor is there to warm up the diesel engine and start it. If the diesel engine wont start with a pony motor, there IS something wrong and no amount of starting fluid will get it running anyway.
@joginns778Ай бұрын
Your right never ever use easy start to a engine it's like a drug when your engine gets addicted to it ,it cause all kinds of problems in the UK the small engine to start the cat is called a donkey engine,😊,
