On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Phoenix AZ on 1-5-19.
We're looking at a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air with 20K original miles, and still has the original tires! The car comes with the factory V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Jim Sheehan. Jim’s had this car since 2018. He shares after a woman originally purchased the car and drove it just a few miles, and sold it to a Museum. The Museum stored the car for 35 years. His friend purchased 9 cars from the Museum and asked Jim if he could store it in his garage, and Jim fell in love with the car and purchased it from his friend.
This survivor is just the way it came back in 1957.
If you’re interested in getting a house and garage like Jim’s, his website is mckenziebrothersbuilder.com/

This is my beautiful sons phone.. loved the recommended video on the original condition bel air. This is a passion of my son. He past away from colon cancer the 26th of December. He was only 30 years old. He has a original 1971 chevelle. He purchased when he was only 17. He had me his mom looking all over the United States to find his dream car. We found it only 10 miles away from a little old lady. The only wear on it was a little hole by the gas peddle where her high heel wore into and a little ding in the back bumper were she hit the trash cans. She only ever drove it from home to church or the grocery store. It sits in his garage as his collector piece because of a family he never got to do what he wanted to and didn’t probably put more than a thousand miles on it himself. What a tragedy. He has all these boxes of ordered stuff for it just sitting in his garage and cancer took him so fast he never got to work on it. 😭 we share the passion for these beautiful pieces of machinery. Can go down the road and notice any of these classics without drooling. Have to put the window down just to hear the sounds of there imagines. Love the Elmer Fud comment about wheeleatate. When I was in high school in 1971 all the hot rodders has 55-57 Chevys. A nice one could be had for less than $300. Those were reckless days. Two of my friends were killed,one in a 55 wagon the other in a 57 Bel Air. The 57 was a beautiful car. Blue with slotted mags. He wrapped it around a tree The impact put the driver into the back seat,on the passenger side . His sister found him. Thanks God I lived through that era. Thank you for your videos.

The 55's56's & the 57 Chevys were the best Chevys of that decade.The biggest thing about restoring Chevys is the parts availability. They made more vehicles than anyone else except maybe Ford. When I used to do auto body & paint work, I met this guy that had two 57 Belairs & he wanted me to restore one & give me the other one for payment. It turned out that the one he wanted to give me was a basket case. It had rusted out ratholes on the fenders,rocker panels, quarter panels, & floor pans & had badly pitted chrome on both bumpers so I passed on it. That's what happens to cars when you just let them rot in an open field!!! The weather beats the hell out of them. Now about that 57,it looks pristine inside & out with nice chrome & trim & Nice Red paint & nice interior plus it has the original 283 engine which was a very good engine. My dad had a 63 Impala with the 283 engine & he had 150k on it before he traded it in. The only things he replaced were the water pump,starter, & alternator. That's a very cool looking 57 Chevy. I ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️that car!!!

Having had a few of these "puppies" as I prefer to call my little puppies, technically, the two-door open-window (no center post) is called a "Sport Coupe." The "sedan came in either 2 or 4 doors. Both the 2 and 4 door sedan have the center post ((B-pillar) that racers enjoy for their added rigidity. But the 2-door Bel Air Sport Coupe are the most sought after.

This video stirs countless fond recollections of my late uncle's beautiful turquoise and white '57 Bel Air hardtop. 283, 4 barrel, duals, Continental kit. We'd cruise all over, go for lunch, attend car shows and invariably get thumbs up, waves and smiles everywhere. He had owned a light blue and white '57 Chevy convertible when he first met/married my aunt and had always wanted another one. No doubt that ragtop he sold as a young newly married guy would be a valuable ride today if restored to excellent condition. Maybe it's even still out there somewhere! I remain grateful that my uncle got to re-live that dream with the hardtop and we got to experience it with him, until he sold the car in 1989. Still, the memories always remain. Thanks for this one, Lou!! Very nice and a piece of history and American cultural heritage.

Outstanding! A treat to see this one. My big brother (rest his soul) bought one very much like it back in '57. For his last Christmas (in 2015), I sent him a fully-detailed diecast model of one just like this one and he was so thrilled. Ah, the memories! How I'd help him wax it (and he'd pay me a quarter), how he let me steer it one day as he drove. And the sound of that Power-Pak (2 4-bbl carbs) and dual exhaust! If they have classic cars in Heaven, I'm sure he's driving one now. Thanks for the memories, Lou. P.S. I have to tell you, you almost scared me to death when you reached down and touched the back edge of that black trunk mat. I bought an original '57 Chevy (60K mi.) back in the 70s and, trust me, you NEVER want to try to lift that mat! I did, just to see how the metal was underneath, and it put a godawful tear in that mat! After that many years the rubber is dry and not pliable at all. Remember that! All the best, Lou!

I'm 68 years old, born & raised in Minneapolis MN, never heard of Barrington, or Barrington Motors Minneapolis either. Hummm, no a car 62 years old could never be a SCAM, right ? Where is the original window sticker ? They had manufacturer's wdw. sticker's back then. The VIN plate mounted on the firewall, looks brand new, polished aluminum, BTW. There was a Harold Chevrolet in Mpls
@herman452
@herman452 5 жыл бұрын
No, first window stickers for new autos was the 1959 model year. Came about as the result of legislation passed into law in July of 1958. And sure, a supposedly low mileage car could be a scam, especially considering that it was common back then for used car dealers to roll back the odometer on a used car they were selling. But there are ways to tell. For one thing here, the original owner kept the car for years, then it went to a collector for many more years. I.e., it wasn't resold by a used car dealer. Secondly, it clearly is not a fully restored car, and the condition of the engine compartment and tires, if nothing else, is pretty convincingly original to me. I could go on, but I see no reason to believe this car is a scam. Low mileage original cars do exist, and this appears to be one of them.

This guy is no dummy. He obviously knows his cars. I am certain he did extensive research and received documentation to prove the cars mileage. As far as you not remembering that dealership, you would have only been 7-8 years old at the time. I am 52. I live in a medium-large sized city. I can not remember all of the car dealerships that have come and gone around here. That is not the kind of thing that most people remember. I have purchased cars from dealerships that are long gone which I cant remember anymore. Dealerships change owners, change names, go out of business. Simply because someone can not remember a car dealership that was in their town when they were 8 years old does not mean it did not exist.
@herman452
@herman452 5 жыл бұрын
Gary. First, the dealer is Barington, not Barrington. With a few minutes online research, I found two links referring to an early fifties dealership Baston-Barington Chevrolet at 1221 West Lake Street in Minneapolis. See tokencatalog.com/token_record_forms.php?action=DisplayTokenRecord&td_id=170163&inventory_id=528121&attribution_id=172620 and slphistory.org/bastonbert/. I'd say Mr. Baston got out at some point leaving Mr. Barington as the sole owner. At any rate, the fact that you never heard of that dealership doesn't mean it didn't exist.

230 comments in just 2 days!! No steering, brakes or air but I wouldn't turn it down!!! Agree with a comment below, shoulda put a "tar top" Delco battery in there. Motor is a 283 - 2V Rochester, Powerglide. . . not the Turgoglide which was also available that year; the tires have "tubeless" on them, which is correct -- 1st year for that, though they could have been bought from Coker Tire some years ago. For the original tires to look that good today, it would have to have been kept inside a humidity-controlled room!! I would adjust the hydraulic lifters. The distributor has the window to adjust points, 1st year for that. One final note: The 283 would need a lead additive to the tank, wasn't designed to run on unleaded. No offense but the interviewer knows little about the Tri-Fives.

In this era GM produced 2 & 4 door cars; they were either posted or non-posted. We called 'em 2 & 4 door sedans (posted) OR- 2 & 4 door Hard-Tops (no post), which was considered the more sportier-- California style. My cuz back in the day had the first 4-D HT I ever saw: a 1956 BelAir, red/white.

@MrGGPRI
@MrGGPRI 5 жыл бұрын
The 2-door post-type was the original 2-D coupe for car manufacturers and produced for many years. About 1950 stylists at GM apparently decided to offer the no-post, 2-D Hard-Top which had a more sportier convertible-look but without the hi-maintenance cloth-top. A friend had a '50 Chev and it was the first Chev available in the 2-D HT; it did look good with all four windows rolled down cruizing out to the beach on a nice California day. The 2-D HT became the hands-down ride to be in, even over convertibles. My first 2-D HT was a '55 Pontiac Catalina, then a '63 Impala SS 340hp; then dropped back to a '62 Bonneville which was pretty much the ultimate hard-top land cruizer of the day.. Fuel was never a problem in that era, tank-up with Chevron Supreme 100+ @ 25-30c/gal and you were good to go; geezz, those were the days..

@@dmer-zy3rb The "point" was (frankly) to have a sexy, top-of-the-line 2 door sport coupe without the restrictive pillars that had taken that away that kind of beauty not many years before '57. It also gave the buyers an additional body style from which to choose. Not everyone wanted the open 2 door coupe. Many more preferred the 2 and 4 door sedans for practicality and felt they were safer. If you look at the roof of the '57 sedans (Bel-Airs included) the roofs are thicker and less sporty. I think the sedans probably did have some safety advantages. It came down to what you body style you wanted and were willing to pay for. Don't forget, Chevy was GM's entry level car division. A lot of people were looking for practicality when buying a Chevy. Others would seek out (say) Oldsmobile for a higher-end car. I'm glad enough people though, sought that out in the '57 Bel-Air coupe! Another thing people forget is that those cars were made for the car buying public of THAT time, not for people today at car shows to wonder why EVERY '57 Chevy weren't the fanciest Bel-Airs. They were (mainly) buying cars to suit their transportation needs and budgets. Many I'm sure loved the Bel-Air coupe too, but bought the 2 or 4 door sedan. It was, in its own way, a 'halo' car. Not like the ultra-expensive Nomad (that lured customers into the showrooms) but a halo car nonetheless.

So many haters or those who just wanna "Clean 'er up a bit", some of you have no idea what a "Survivor" car is. Real basic - a car which has survived as ALL original or with minimal, necessary repairs. A car is only original ONCE - as nice as it might be to paint those valve covers, it's not the right thing to so. Quite possible the heater hoses finally gave out or were close to that - surprising no one mentioned the battery was a newer sealed unit without the original vented caps. Somebody mentioned "No window sticker", somehow I think the original purchaser never knew that 60 + years later we would be discussing her baby. This gentleman allowed Lou to record his property for the benefit of those of us to enjoy, not to have it picked apart. Like the rest, I'm allowed my 2 cents, so there it is.

I have a 60 year old Firestone gum dipped bias ply tire on the spare in my 56 Plymouth. It has not "completely disintegrated." In fact, it has no visible cracks in it. And no, it's not a modern replica, all of which have DOT info stamped into the sidewall, including dates, etc. Keep a tire inside and out of the sun, and it will last a long time (not to say it would be safe to drive, but it would look OK).

Just taking care of them. Not letting them sit flat, keeping them in a garage out of sunlight, keeping them clean with tire protector type products, maybe keeping the car lifted in the air so the vehicle is not resting on them. As they said in the vehicle the tires are not safe to drive on. They are showing signs of cracking in the sidewalls. If he were to decide to drive it regularly he would need to replace them. The previous and current owners were obviously very anal about this car and its upkeep. Yeah it got a small ding here or there and paint fading in places like the door jams and trunk lining but those things can not be helped. for the most part it has been extremely well maintained. If this car were a restoration project it would not have those flaws.

It's miraculous that this car survived in the state it's in . With the original tires ! That's just unheard of. Lou , you outdid yourself here . Thank you very much for sharing . p.s. the garage business must be doing very well for Mr . Sheehan out there in what looks like Arizona .

57 Bel Airs are a dime-a-dozen it was the cliche Old Man classic car in the 90s and 2000's but that one right there is amazing truly a keeper that would be one of those cars you keep in your collection for life because it's in amazing condition it's like this man that found a 1988 Monte Carlo Super Sport with t-tops with less than 1000 miles on it that was never sold and never left the showroom floor here in Jersey what a treasure

...not a sedan...a 2 door hardtop...I must say a BIG THANK YOU for preserving this car...and NOT lowering it, putting 22" wheels on it, disc brakes, LS motor swap, bucket seats...you know, all the stuff that makes it NOT really a '57 anymore...I believe if I owned it, I would get a second set of wheels/tires and drive it just a LITTLE... :)...keep the originals, though...actually, driving and running it a little might actually help preserve it...anyway, thank YOU Lou Costabile for showing us these great cars! :)
