1958 Chevy Kit Comparison

I have both the AMT and the Revell versions of the 58 Chevy kits. Both unbuilt. I've had the Revell kit for a number of years but when I saw the awesome retro box art on the latest AMT reissue, I just couldn't resist purchasing it.

From what I’ve heard, the Revell 58 Impala started out as a die cast model and was later converted into a plastic kit. That explains the chrome trim as separate parts. I have a couple of the die cast kit versions that came out 20ish years ago. I started filling in the openings for the chrome trim on one of the die cast kits and you are correct, it’s a pain.

Absolutely LOVE the ‘58s. Dad had a ‘58 Biscayne. “Mister Voodoo”. Man I wish he would’ve kept it.

I'm definitely a love it guy and can't see how anyone could hate it! I think I have 3 of each of the kits. I love the 58-64 Impalas and the 58 is my mom's favorite that I need to build one for. I'm definitely looking forward to the build, Watson and Winfield are definitely my favorites especially when it comes to painters. Fades and panels are such an iconic looks and are relatively simple when it comes to custom painting. These 2 are kind of outliers as there's no "better" between the companies just depends on what you're after. 👍

After removing the same lower quarter trim on my AMT 58 it's image "ghosted" back after priming. It took a couple of times of priming & sanding to get it to disappear. Your Revell example is very nice.

The AMT57 and 58 kits were from the early 60s and were advanced for the times. Their roof lines were a little low.

If you note the decals in the AMT kit..it gives you the option to build Steve Bollanders car from American Graffiti. One of the reasons i bought 3 of them. Until this video, i had no clue that revell kit existed 😅

Cool comparison, i have the AMT version of that 58, and i was thinking of doing it for your gb, but because of the chrome i whent with the 51.

58 and 60 impalas are my favorites. I've built many of the amt 58s. Built a lot of them as lowriders with working hydraulic systems.

And i find it very funny that your revell 58 looks so much like one i have built (in a way that is, mine is also green and we use the same hubcaps on our builds) i think i will do a video of my build aswell and put up here. And also i have just started a AMT 58 that im building a kustom of! But mine will have more body modifications done to it, i'm combining the 58 chevy body with a cadillac...hmm. maybe i will include that build in the video..or i might start a own video of that one 😉

Great video; like the info about these kits. I have one unbuilt at the moment and probably AMT type. I love the 58 Chevy better than the tri 5's! I'm slowly building all the 58-64 kits and doing an ebay glue bomb 62 to Nascar conversion. Nice built kit and looking forward to the updates on the custom.

FYI the Tri-Power is not stock (aftermarket) on the the 348 or 409, a single 4BBL or Dual 4BBL was availible from the factory

Sorry, that’s wrong. You could get a factory tri-power on a 348. The 409s only had the dual quad. I’ve got a buddy with a factory 348 tri-power 58 Chevy. A google search will also confirm.

Different tastes, i prefer amts kit, so much more you can do to it, AND you can buy two, so you can open the trunk, who cares that you have to b,m,f, the whole car, like your comparison is nice, but revells car while featuring open trunk is too "modernized"! They also offer NO performance goodies. They feature an automatic whereas amt has a manual, I do like the build you are starting on the amt car,
