To do that, you'd have to get an inline 6 to put it back in. Look at the battery position, right up against the radiator. On an original v8, the inner fender wall had a carvity that moved the battery away from the radiator and generator pulley. This car does not have that.

I don't know how long they made the 260 v-8, but I bought a brand new Ford F-150 p/u truck in 1980 and they gave me a choice of two trucks for the same price. Either I could take a truck with a 460 and 3 speed automatic or one with a 260 V-8 and a 4 on the floor tranny. I chose the truck with the 260 V-8. After I bought it I had the dealership order an A/C kit to be installed by them. When the kit came in I was floored when the kit came with the old fashioned blower and control box that sat on the middle of the truck floor. Believe it or not it was a great A/C unit. It came with a newer type round compressor instead of the old piston type compressor. I learned that the 260 V-* was the same old engine that was brought out in the 50s but it had been upraded over the years and had quite a lot more H.P. than when it first came out. It came with higher compression, aluminum heads and just a really good drive train. It wasn't a real fast truck but mated with the 4 speed with tall gears it ran down the road pretty efficiently. I got more than 26 mpg on the highway and about 20 in the city driving. The Fords they come out with ow have a hard time doing that. Maybe the manufacturers need to start stepping back and go back to something that worked then and would be a lot simpiler and easier to make. Not only that maybe they could make something that wouldnt take a mechanical guru to work on them. We might even get back to simple designs that the average person could actually work on without a computer. We have gotten so smart that it takes somebody who has a technical diploma to make a simple repair on a vehicle that costs more than my house cost when I built it in 1978. This has gotten so far out of hand now it is rediculous. Somebody has to make $150,000/year just to afford a simple car.

@ TBull Cajunbreadmaker So true about the complication ( Technican here comment bombing your post!)The 260 was a bored out 221 or a small bore 289. 3.80" bore x 2.87" stroke engine which was the common more Sunbeam Tiger engine. The 1980-1983 4.2 liter was a tiny 3.68 " bore by 3.00" stroke engine...a destroked 5.0 / 302 with Falcon 200 six pistons. The 4speed equipped 4.2 was used in F150s exclusively as a base engine, only 4.2 ever equipped with a over drive four speed "manual", even in California. It was a Highly underated Fox and F150s option, not so good in a Crown Victoria where it used more fuel than the 5.0 and 5.8 liter High Output options.

crocbait aussie: the Australian and Argentinian Falcons continued with sixes only for the Round body. In the US and Canada, 260 V8 ( not 221 i6). Then the 289 for the next year. The Aussie Fairlane compact had 221 V8s, 260 and 289s for 62 to 66. The Fairlane 260 V8 in Round Body Falcons was an exceptional engine. 164 hp gross and even with a two speed Fordomatic, good acceleration and economy! IIRC, the first US 289 was released before the Pontiac GTO as a high performance US Fairlane Sports Coupe and also Mercury Comete option in the mid 1963 June period for the October 1963 "1964" model year release, both as K codes and a kind of D code for Mercury's. Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.:-(
