The glass windshield washer bottle was actually the backup supply all GM cars in that era had. The plastic reservoir is original to the car.

My father bought a 1963 Riviera new. It was a stunningly beautiful and different type of car. I actually took my drivers test in this car and stole it from my parents every chance I could. It was fast and nimble and never failed to turn heads. It was a bit of a gas hog getting well under 20 miles per gallon with its huge Buick Wildcat motor. I felt like a king driving it and wish I had it today in my collection of cars along with my C4 Corvette, 2002 Thunderbird and my 2016 Mustang. I wonder how much the car you showed that looked show-room fresh, costs. If that car had air conditioning I’d consider buying it. But in South Florida a/c is a necessity.

I had a 64 my college days. It was a cheap used car then but in pretty good condition. I felt like an aristocrat driving that thing. There was just nothing else like it on the road. Like an exclusive European coupe. Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Jaguar could not match the Riviera's beauty and presence. Definitely one of the most beautiful American cars ever built. Unlike the Thunderbird which was a bit shouty, the Riviera was restrained and elegant.

That would be a stellar car to have in your college years I had an 88 Lincoln town car signature series in my college years I went to art school for photography but I didn’t graduate. It was going to cost like 60 grand to go to school for two years, so I opted to save money anyway when I drove the link and I felt like it was too good of a car for my economic status. I loved driving down into Pittsburgh because that’s where I went to college and they have some bricks streets and you can see the reflection of the car in the buildings and it just looks so posh. Man I miss that car, best riding car I ever owned. But man having a rivera in college that’s totally cool. Did you meet your wife in that car?

Bill Mitchell really did a superb job with the first generation Riviera. Such a timeless, sophisticated design. I always loved the four bucket seats, and the rear passengers weren’t overlooked - there was even a lift-up centre armrest. Another charming and informative video, and I hope that one day you’ll do one on Mitchell’s first generation Cadillac Seville.

Very enjoyable video. I was around when these cars were new. I agree that the Riv was beautiful, one of the prettiest car of the era. It was a time when cars were works of art. The big difference between the 63 and 64 was the 63 had the twin turbine dynaflow, and the 64 had the much superior Turbo hydramatic, the 63 had the 325 hp 401 as standard equipment while the 64 had the 340 hp 425. The 63 had real leather seats as an option while the 64 had vinyl or vinyl and cloth only. The only other visible difference was some minor dash controls.

i'm adding another comment: Looking closer at the C pillar, & around the rear window, I'm reminded of the current manufacturing of the Bentley Mulsanne's similar C pillar section & the handwork to make the area seamless by the filing & finishing. The Riviera has incredibly beautiful lines that remind me of the curves at the rear sections of the Rolls Silver Shadow. This 60's car truly is a exceptional design of a bygone era.

Had a chance to buy one in the late sixties but it broke while on a test drive so I never looked back. I was young and should have waited for the car to be sorted. My loss, damn. I found it interesting once again as you read the option list of how many of those options are expected today on far lesser cars. Thanks again for a look at another fantastic car.

If you saw many other toggle switches on other Rivera's where the courtesy light and antenna are located as you mentioned, you were looking at a 1963 Rivera. Buick put the heat/air conditioner switches up in that location the first year of Rivera production. Turns out using them was really confusing for customers so they moved the heat and a/c to a more classic position on the dashboard.

My great aunt had a 1971 Rivera with the Boat tail rear end in Banana cream yellow. I'm not really a GM person but I have to say that it was over all one of the most beautiful cars I have seen. Side note the Carter AFB was essentially cloned by Edelbrock sold as the Performer Carbs (1400 series ). It's design is was pretty advanced for the day, while the Holley carbs were capable of more power the Carter AFBs were near bullet proof once set-up. They hold a tune, never leak and you mess don't need to with them. I have a Edelbrock 1406 I put on a 302 20 yrs ago and it's never had or needed a tune up. I like the videos keep it up!

Agree the Rivs up through 1970 were awesome. But, the boat tailed ones from 71 - 73, were another matter entirely. Too radical a des and sales tanked as a result. Unfortunately, Buick was locked into that design until 74, when they could finally correct Bill Mitchell’s styling excess. Sometimes he got it right and sometimes he didn’t. The Rivs are a perfect example.

Did these things really come with power door locks? I never heard about that and I own one. Wow I need to do a search now! Button in the back of the center console is a light switch for that original lens directly above it. You got the light switch a little rbit backwards. All the way to the left is gauge lighting max + courtesy lights at the back. All the way out is low beams and running lights. Half way out is running lights. High beams are on the floor. Wipers aren't a pull out. They just turn to actuate the wipers and the washer fluid turns on when you push the center button that's missing on it. I lost mine too and had to remake it.

The 1963 Rivieras came with the twin-turbine DynaFlow. Reverse was located at the bottom to the quadrant. The 1964 Rivieras came with either the ST3200(2-speed)(I have worked on 2 of these) or ST400(3-speed). The 1964 ST400 didn't have a 2nd gear position and was also used in the 1964 Cadillacs after they ran out of HydraMatics. For 1965, a 2nd gear position was added to the ST400, and under the more familiar guise of TH400, all other GM car divisions also had it available. The difference between the ST400 and the TH400 was that the ST's had a variable pitch stator which increased the stall speed by up to 1,000 rpm.

But actual wire wheels versus wire wheel covers are two totally different things because the wheel covers are just simulated to look like that whereas the wheels are that on both sides so it would probably be easier to clean those.. but the Grand Prix car thing it’s a huge project and I haven’t even told my wife about yet it will be one of them projects that I’ll have to find a chassis and then I’ll have to find somebody to build me a body I already know what roundabout what engine I want a used transmission get it all the work.. that’s long term goal money is the problem I can’t build that car just yet want to

Beautiful cars and maybe a better performing car than the T-birds of the time, but the T-birds were more futuristic and spaceship like. Add that you could get the Thunderbird in a convertible with the power roof that folds down in the trunk for a sleek and low cruiser…. I would have to go Thunderbird convertible. Both cool and prestigious cars of their times and both outside the price point of the average buyer… but if you could afford the glitter… the Thunderbird convertible for me.

The 63, 64, and 65's are my favorite Riviera's with the 65 being my choice out of those three, and the 64 being my least favorite just because Buick had cheapened the interior a bit over the 63. The 65 had a better looking interior than the 64 and in my opinion the 65 was definitely the nicest. I did own a fully loaded 63 in the sixties, and sorry now I never bought a 65 and kept it.

The 65 is my favorite and that’s the one Bill Mitchell envision the car to be with the clamshell style headlights. So many great designs I honestly believe this era Riviera is totally underrated Gentlemens hot rod it was the perfect size it wasn’t too big it wasn’t too small I love the bucket seats in the back.. that’s another car that I really wanna drive your wife it’s actually like to drive it down the road I often wonder if my reservation of what I think that car would be like would match the actual experience.

The problem in my opinion is cars today don’t really have souls they are generic (most not all) and with all the technology direct injection, computers still getting 25mpg average is pathetic, model T model A got 20-25mpg almost 100 years ago. I had a 88 Lincoln 5.0 V8 get 25 miles per gallon Hwy.. and there are cars that get better and cars that get worse. Jeep has a V8 Jeep 292 I reviewed awhile back gets 8 when in it 11 on the HWY that’s terrible. It sounds amazing but it’s a total pig. In my opinion (I want to do an episode on fuel economy on day) if car companies cared about gas mileage they would bring back free wheeling. Say when one gets to the top of a hill or mountain put car in Neutral and tur the engine off by double clicking left paddle shifter your running on gravity free energy.. when one gets to the bottom or runs out of inertia.. click right paddle shifter twice behind steering wheel to turn car back on.. Another is two speed rear.. I’ve read that overdrive on these cars cut engine speed by 35% what if we could flip that number 75% or even 50% with a massive overdrive.. I know trade off would be no power to pass, if on a straight road and level road long road trip cruise control, my thought process is if engine is turning 3,000 rpm at 70miles per hour with a. Rear end at 50% or 1:1.5 ratio 1,500rpm outcome will be using half as much gas.. gas is $5 here in Pennsylvania really makes one start thinking

1963 1964 and 1965 Rivieras all had different automatic transmissions. Only the 65’s had the Turbo 400’s. A shame this one lacks Air conditioning as a car of this caliber really should have. I cringed when he opened the glove box by its left lower corner. You will see many Rivieras and other Buicks with that corner bent upward as a result. There ate a lot of other options this car could have been equipped with. Dual master cylinders were required in 1967. Few cars had them before then. All GM cars had alternators beginning in 1963. T Birds may have outsold them but the Rivieras were FAR better cars in all areas! My 1965 Riveras were lucky to get 10 MPH. Usually more like 7-8 MPG. Wonderful cars!

The 63-65 buick rivieras were one of a kind. The design was unique to the Buick Riviera only. It did not share anything with any other vehicles. Now in 66 when G.M. introduce the Toronado they were built on similar platform but you could still tell them apart . The Riviera had beautiful lines , you could not mistake the Riviera to a Toronado . THE 66-69 Rivieras were beautiful designed ,especially the 66-67 . They had beautiful body lines, looked awesome from every angle. The Toronado looked to bulky it just didn't have the flowing and crisp edges of the Buick. That just my opinion.

My parents, until the 80s, always drove Buicks. My dad, bless his heart, loved fast cars but always ended up driving an Electra 225. My mom drove a station wagon until my sister and I were in college then discovered the Riviera. But after buying the crap GM was building, they traded in their Buicks and never looked back. My mom bought a red Mercedes 300D and had it for the rest of her life. My dad? No sports car for him in his golden years. He bought (and loved) a series of Ford pickups…🤷‍♂️

Lol. You are WRONG about everything. I have owned a 63 Rivera for 30 years and know the history of the development inside out. 1) It was NEVER going to be a front drive! It was designed new from the ground up and was always meant to be a rear drive. 2) The comment about the 2 windshield washer bottles? Absurd. The clear bottle contained a windshield washer concentrate that was mixed with plain water to be then poured into the reservoir. 3) Rear console switch was a light. The other areas of the dash (empty on this car) was for AC controls, power antennae and courtesy floor lights.

I have permission to do this with all the cars before hand. Trying to keep these cars Relevant for younger generations, and anyone who wants to know more about lost and forgotten off the beaten path. I often get told by older guys that Younger generations, don’t care about Classic Cars and the reason is is because people are like don’t go near my car don’t touch my car don’t do this with my car so the younger generations they moved on to other things, like video games and anything else. I’ve owned a few 67 mustang (that I picked up hitch hikers in and ran someone that was walking up the road to a gas station) 73 karman Ghia (which I used as a photography prop) currently own a 52 Chevy ( and let anyone sit in it especially young kids and teens if their parents allow and I even let older people sit in it, I try and share what I have, it’s not going to be mine forever and I’d rather it go to someone who is going to love it like I do.. the only other options are museum junk yard, or you get buried in it ) because it’s about planting seeds.. it’s about sharing a cool experience. The end goal is about keeping this stuff on the road. =) But to get back to your question yes I have permission to do this from all of the dealerships as well as I get to drive some cars and I don’t take the cars without people knowing I don’t get into cars without people knowing I don’t touch any car without permission, unless it’s my own car =)
