Almost all of my comments disappeared. I have built FEs for over 40 years. I know who owns the Fairlane and it is legit. All they need is a set of valve springs and one piece retainers and they will rev. The heads and intake manifolds work well together but the first thing I tuned was good springs and one piece retainers so it would rev to 6000 rpms+ the cam in 1966 was the B cam that came in the Cobra jet 428 that had 20 more degrees on the exhaust side to make up for the unibody manifolds. Ford developed a great tuning guide with these cars. And they learned a lot in dyno testing. Most slow cars were just not properly tuned. The C cam was legal in the 428CJ. Once you get the 390 to rev they make 400 hp. I have done stock legal engines that did 410 hp with more ring gap and bearing clearance on the wide side with C6AER heads and 2.04/1.56 valves stock 45 degree valve job with factory 30 degree back cut. And they did run low 13s and a high 12 on occasion, 4.11s and a C6 ran in drive with the R servo would shift at 6000. Did you hear it? Please don’t delete this, I really have done this for a living. I won’t even go into what you can do on a distributor machine.

Very interesting explanation as to why the Fairlane ran two seconds faster than off the showroom. Car and Driver did a supercar comparo in 1966 with a Comet Cyclone GT 4-speed and a Fairlane GTA vs. GTO, 442, Buick GS and SS396. The Cyclone was prepped by Bud Moore and the Fairlane by Holman and Moody. Both cars were ostensibly stock, despite revving to 6500. They ran in the 13.95-14.1 range.

Problem was my bros were only 15/14; BUT we did have a large cow pasture. So rink owner brought the Studebaker to bros, and every day after school, they'd dirt track it n the cow pasture. My love affair with 66/67 GT/GTAs. I was 14 in 1966 when I first saw the 66 Fairlane GT/GTAs advertised in car magazines. Several months later I was at the hobby shop and there was a GT/GTA 1/24 scale model, and I just had to buy it. I went right home and started building the model. When I finished, it had a black interior and red exterior, and those FOMOCO model wheels really made that plastic car look almost like its full size big brother. I was so proud of that model because it was the finest work I had done building model cars and planes. For four years I dreamed of buying a 66 or 67 GT/GTA, and after I finally saved enough money for a good down payment, I was ready to buy one. The first one I found was a blue Fairlane 500 with a 427 motor and 4 speed transmission. My father would not let me buy it, as he put it, "its too fast for you!" Go find another but with a smaller engine. The next one I found was a black GT, 390 and 4 speed. When he got home from work I told him all about it, but again, he was not thrilled with my choice. He said, no 4 speed transmissions! About a week later, I found a 66 GTA. It was red with a black interior, just like the model I built four years earlier! I was hesitant to tell pop that I found my dream car. He asked what motor and transmission. I said "an automatic and a 390". At that, his look was not encouraging to me, however after a long pause, he said, "well tomorrow is Saturday and we'll go look at it". We left the house at around 10 am Saturday morning and was at the Pontiac dealership in Monrovia, Ca in about twenty, twenty five minutes. As we pulled onto the lot, pop saw the bright and shiny, red Ford Fairlane GTA, and said, "wow, that is one gorgeous car, you sure have great taste Dickie!" Within five minutes we were getting into the car with the salesman. Pop told the salesman that he'd like to drive it first before letting me take the wheel. The salesman said "fine but I will have to come along as it's the dealership's policy". Then pop said to the salesman, "why don't you get into the front passenger seat, and Dickie, you get in the back seat." Oh brother, I was so disappointed having to sit in the back seat of the car I wanted to buy! As pop was pulling out of the dealership, he stomped on the accelerator, and we burned rubber for twenty to thirty feet and he raced the car up to about fifty miles and then he had to hit the brake medal a bit hard as the traffic signal ahead had just turned red. And, as it just so happened, this signal was right at the freeway on ramp. As we came to a stop, Pop paused a second and since there was no traffic, he stomped on the accelerator and we laid rubber and smoke up the on ramp. As we entered the free way we were already traveling faster than the 65 mile per hour speed limit, and pop just kept the hammer down on the accelerator. It was like he wanted to see just how fast that car could go and how quick it took to get there! I'm sitting on the back seat hump with a hand on the back of each bucket seat and had a clear view of the speedometer and by this time it was passing a 100 miles an hour, at that I looked over at the salesman, he was white as a ghost and holding onto the dashboard the the interior door handle. He was so scared he looked like he was going to die! Me, I was thrilled! I had never gone so fast in a car! Up till that point, I was use to driving mom's, 56 Buick Century and later her 61 Rambler. The Buick had the big engine but it was one heavy car, yet it had some good get up and go, but nothing like that Fairlane GTA, 335 horsepower! The Rambler was, well, like driving a turtle! Now that we were hitting 110, pop placed his right hand on the top of the front passenger bucket seat so he could turn his head and look back at me, eye to eye, and say, "this car is too fast for you!" Then he turned away from me and went back to driving the car, but at a less rapid speed. Fifteen minutes later we were back at the dealership, and as we were getting out of the car, he said to the salesman, "lets go into the office and talk price and terms!" What, I said to myself, he's going to let me buy it! I was so thrilled, in fact, I was so thrilled, I didn't even think that I had not even driven the car myself! After the deal was made and told the salesman, hand the keys to Dickie, its his car now and he can drive it home! The salesman put the keys in my hand and then reached out to me and we shook hands. That's when I truly felt that I had just bought my dream car, and it was my firs car! Dang, I sure wish I still owned that Fairlane GTA, and actually, for the past forty something years I have wish I still owned it! Fond memories!!! God bless, Dickie... well Richard now! LOL

I always loved to hear the engine REV at the end of the track or driving hard into the distance is a SONG and MUSIC only GOD could have created, I have never heard 2 street engines that WORKED so well like these 2 cars. Listen to them both they sound MUCH BETTER running together than one by itself Kind of like a Musical Band with 2 Guitars than just One Guitar, Really Nice!

That was the first car I ever had was a 1966 Ford Fairlane 390 big block with a big 4 barrel Holley on it is how much fun when I was 16 years old and now I'm 57 boy I miss that card🍻🍻🇺🇸

Hard to believe and I'm a Ford man. The 390 I had lost races to grocery carts .

The Ford guy obviously tickled his engine better than the chevy guy. Chevies have larger head volume, but Fords are simply a better design. If you have doubts, look at LS heads. The design resembles the SBF head.

Not gonna lie this surprised me. As someone who works on classic cars I've never seen a fairland beat a camaro.

Surprised me as well. Would have expected that Camaro to run faster than a 13 flat. Both are beautiful cars tho.

Ok that Fairlane is butchered a bit, GT was manual GTA was automatic, that 15.2 quarter mile was from a hot rod magazine and thats the only numbers you find on internet, l owned a 67 GTA, in consistently ran low 13's, it was a great sleeper car

I never understood why Chevy named the camaro RS/SS I guess they didn't know if it was really slow or super slow so they named it both!!!!!

I had a friend in my hometown who had a 74 Z28 and he took out the original 350 and replaced it with a 396 and added an L88 hood and Cragar SS five spoke wheels.

The 390 GTAs where I lived were pretty cars, but they were rarely a threat on the street. Freshly tuned muscle cars from other makers could usually outrun them. (This GTA has obviously been thoroughly tuned.)

I had a 390 in a '67 Mustang.; two of them as a matter of fact. They were okay, but neither were super performing cars. That is incredible for the Fairlane to be stock and run those times. I would like to know the whole story on this vehicle !!
@michaelbower2117 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree! This out come was shocking! I’ll still take the Camaro . It seems there is a 427 instead of a 390 in the Fairlane…lol

Im a Ford guy for sure but also a car guy like them all, before watching this my money would've been on the Camaro, having owned many Fairlane 390 cars back in the 80's when prices were sane unlike today I think the 390 was a unrated motor a little tweaking and they came on strong easy to work on too.

The Chevy has a higher mi/hr every time, indicating a better race suited for a 1/2 mile, or top end. The Ford, though, clearly the winner. I've owned both Fords and Chevys in the 1970's - 2000's
@jrvbamafan13 жыл бұрын
No it didn't. The ford ran a 104.96 to the chevys 104.16 the first time
@yrh1gs2 жыл бұрын
Very close. I wonder if both were really stock. Magazine tests tell a different story. If the are totally stock there must have been a slight weight difference and the Ford putting out more torque. Just wondering. Great race!
