Cannot wait to see a 1971 Firebird Formula 400 on this channel...I've been restoring one over the course of my enlistment. Got it running rough in primer with a tired 400 and a TH400. Since then rebuilt with a hotter cam, ported heads, bored .030 over, 850 double pumper and ripped the auto out for a M22, yeah it's got a rock crusher! With the earlier 32/28 input/output splines that were tough than the later ones. Of course, has a sweet huge dash tach now too! Still has the factory 10 bolt rear end but the 12 bolt is coming soon, gonna upgrade to a 3.55 final drive too. That and all the small badging is all I have left to do. Got the PHS paperwork on it and it was ordered in Carousel Red back in the day so I stuck with that. Unfortunately, the car was missing it's AWESOME Formula hood when I got it and had a '76 hood instead. When the engine got back in the car, it wouldn't fit so I got a fiberglass L88 style hood for it since I needed the cowl space and I thought the gentle rounded edges would go better with the second gen styling. Personally I think it looks sweet. Hope to be getting some good track time with it soon!

The C6 was 1 of Ford's best ever transmissions. Later in life they got mods that helped free up some lost power. However, in that era, the 390s with 4 speeds were much faster bone stock. Better ign and cam timing, different carb jetting made a somewhat docile 390 pretty good, and the close ratio gearing helped keep the revs up. A co-worker had a 74 455SD TA with the 4 speed and dealer installed 3.42s. 2nd gear starts in city driving were almost a must. Low end grunt was silly. He could barely drive the thing in the rain, it was so tailhappy.

I had a '67 Fastback Mustang that I completely re-worked the 351C engine in and it would turn an easy 8K RPM. I did everything I could to the internals, block and heads, including: polished rod beams and crank throws, chamfered block and oil returns, etc., hand ported heads and intake manifold (Edelbrock), w/ everthing balanced to w/in .01g. It had a two inch exhaust w/ 1 7/8" headers, coupled to the 9-inch 3"90 diff and that car was a beast on track! But it looked completely stock. lol

May I add? I was very much a young gear head when the TA was brand new in '73 and '74. You know what? If memory serves me, those were the TOP smog years for big V8 engines, and I have to hand to Pontiac, that 455 SD was the most powerful motor PERIOD! I believe 310 HP. in '73 and then down to 290 in '74. UNHEARD of HP numbers then! I also remember the deal with closing off the cowl hood intake as well in '74....... Reason? The intake of the Quadrajet EXCEEDED drive by decibel levels at WOT !! Can you believe it ??? What a disappointment ! )O: How things have changed.

Both 290hp in final production, Shakers were blocked off after 72.
@garysmith84554 жыл бұрын
@@chutoparadinni5474 Can you point me to the source of your info, the brochures on the showroom floor (which would of course, reflect the actual released specs?) I worked at an Olds dealer next to an Exxon station. The gal who minded the gas station bought a brand new '73 455 TA. I thought it's 'shaker' hood was OPEN to the intake and HP rated at 310. This info was readily available in the car mags at the time. Do tell.
@justme307 Жыл бұрын
@@garysmith8455 I believe the 310 rating was on a pre-production motor. 290 HP is the generally accepted rating. "The initial horsepower rating was 310 at 4,000 rpm, but this engine felt just as good at 6,000 rpm, Adams told Lamm. Adams' crew designed the Super Duty so it could be converted for all-out racing, including a dry-sump provision. It had four-bolt mains, reinforced bulkheads, and increased webbing in the lifter valley area to increase overall strength. Pistons were forged TRW aluminum pieces at 8.4:1 compression ratio to accept the new low-lead fuel and the inevitable unleaded, which debuted in late summer 1974. The connecting rods were choice pieces too, 5140 forged steel, and weighed 30.7 ounces--an ounce less than regular 455 rods. The crankshaft was cast and nitrided, with greater oil clearances, a baffled pan and the aforementioned provisions built into the rear of the block to allow a conversion to dry sump for racing. However, the 310hp rating was reduced to 290hp officially and that's where it stayed through the engine's demise in 1974."

@@justme307 Wow, ok thanks for all the infor! I noted that my comment was from 2 years ago 😊. DID you note that bit about the cowl intake being closed off? I remember how disappointed a co-worker was when he was about to order the '74.

@@garysmith8455 I was just in a KZbin spiral yesterday when I came up this video. I always thought the Formula could be had with ram air and the TA could not. Found this info today: "Whether the Formula Hood Scoops could be made functional from the factory is a controversial topic. Both The Fabulaous Firebird by Michale Lamm and Firebird, America's Premiere Performance Car by Gary Witzenberg say that all hood scoops were closed beginning in 1973 but option 634/WU3 listed Ram Air Hood as available for 400 and 400 equipped Formula's. It is not unusual for Pontiac to cancel options if regulation were involved as it was for the Trans Am (Trans Am could not meet Federal noise emissions standard with a functional scoop) but in this case it was probably not. Pontiac parts manauls show Hood part number 490661 as RAM AIR EXC SHAKER HOOD - W/FUNCTIONAL SCOOPS as available up to 1975.The same parts manual shows RAM AIR Decal part numbers(black or White) available until 1974.It is tehrefore determined that the 634/WU3 option was valaid for 1973. Note that since the Formula with the SD-455 engine shared Trans Am's shaker hood scoop the SD-455 could not be ordered with a functional scoop. The Trans Am with a standard 455 engine would have a closed shaker as well so it is possible that a Formula ordered with the optional 455 engine and functional scoops may have had more horsepower than a TA."

Don't see Fords in pure stock racing today? Ford had a strong presence in professional racing, but were rarely seen at the local drags back in the sixties and seventies. At least not where I lived, they didn't, and I lived several different places in Georgia and Florida in that period. Mostly saw Chevelle SS 396's, Camaros, GTO's and Mopars. On the street, and at the local drags, Fords were mostly duds. That was true all the way up until the 5-liter Mustang era.

Waking up the farmer at 1 Am with the pitiful and confusing request to "help yank his car out of his cornfield" was truly entertaining...the look on that man's face...Sadly the poor Lemans was doomed with Dave's "driving style" and she was planted into a guard rail the next winter I do recall...very rare car today have not seen another like it since.

That was really surprising having owned 2 Fairlane GT390's in my teens. I got beat by every 396 Chevelle I raced including the lowly 325HP version. I even had trouble with small block Chevys. The car also had the worst wheel hop on launch of any vehicle I ever owned. I added a leaf to both sides and clamped the leafs ahead of the rear axle to stop the U-joint carnage. That SD was either seriously over-cammed, just off-tune that day, or maybe the driver was just playing nice with the Fairlane.
