My grandpa had a pristine pale yellow ‘67 four door with a 283 V-8. It was a sweetheart. It was also babied with a daily rinsing to keep the coastal salt air from eating it alive. It lasted 14 years and only had 15,000 miles when grandpa caused an accident and totaled it. I was 15 at the time. So close, and yet, so far

The truth is; creatures of habit, like the character in this commercial, didn't necessarily buy the same make of car each time out of loyalty to the automaker. It was usually because of their relationship with the salesman. Back then, new car salesmen didn't bounce from dealer to dealer every couple of years. Most worked for the same dealership as a career and had a regular customer base. When you needed a car, you visited the salesman that sold you the last car, and the one before that. Salesmen were professionals you could actually trust. My Dad bought all of his vehicles from Bob Kieffe starting in 1958 until Kieffe retired in 1993. Dad probably could have found a better deal elsewhere but he only trusted Bob. A lot of people trusted him too; that is how Bob managed to retire after nearly 40 years and buy a beautiful home near the lake. Today's salesmen are a different breed; they forget your name as soon as you drive off the lot, and really couldn't care less. In 6 months they will be working for another dealer

(1) They did mention that the TH400 (3 spd automatic) was available, and only in the SS396... All true. What they did not mention besides not mentioning the 375 hp/396 was that a 427 was also available from the Dealers. See my other comments. I have owned three 1967 Chevrolet Chevelles thru the years. All fun cars. I had all Malibus. One was the venerable 195 hp/283 in a 2dr hardtop, a 195 hp/283 in a 4dr sedan (not the cool looking hardtop, but one like the one in this video. Also, I had a Malibu 2dr hardtop with a 155hp/250 6 cyl... That one I bought in 1981 with 59,745 miles on it and sold with a little over 172,000 on it in June, 1993... Even took it to Germany with me while in Uncle Sam's Army and drove it all over the place. That 6 cruised at 90-100 mph... For hours on end too. Top speed was 105 mph on the straight. The 283's were good for 115-120 mph depending on model...

You are obviously a die hard Mopar guy. That is very hard to change. I have always been a die hard GM guy, but have driven, and known people whose Mopars I had the opportunity to drive in, and over the years have developed a fondness for a plethora of Mopars. My favorites are 1960 Chrysler 300F, 1960 Dodge Matador and Polara, 1965 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S, 1958 Dodge Coronet (Spring Special Swept Wing came in either bronze or creme), 1966 and 1967 Dodge Coronet 500 and R/T (respectively), 1968 and 1969 Dodge Charger/ Charger R/T... Oh, and 1961 Chrysler 300G, 1957-58 300C, 300D, 1957-58 Chrysler's in the higher level trim lines, like the New Yorker and the line below it, and the same two years for the De Soto with the Sportsman and Adventurer models... Just to name a few!

Regardless of the small advantages that Dodge offered, if the car doesn't ride nicely, they are meaningless. Most people back then wanted a soft, smooth ride. Chevrolet gave them that. Dodge's "Torsion-Aire" ride was too stiff for everyday driving. The "Torsion-Aire" ride held an advantage if you drove over 80 MPH on a regular basis. Most people back then didn't though.

This lunk-headed, intimidation based dealer training perfectly matches the level of the average new car salesman. And the average dealership owner. Lack of sophistication, logic and facts. Boxing match-level banter. 4:22 Really-reaching potshots like "that big slot in the Chevelle's bumper adds nothing, either to its strength or its looks" Note the Donald Trump-like contempt in the voiceover. You could just as well argue the Coronet's solid bumper adds nothing but gas-wasting weight, and the engine will overheat more easily without the slot's ventilation.

Overall, I find the 1967 Chevelle Malibu to be a handsome looking car. Perhaps its least attractive feature is the front, where the grille is. Another thing I've always liked about Mopar cars vs. GM cars is the use of proper gauges vs. warning "idiot" lights.

You don't like the front? Man, I like that car from stem to stern. The front is clean and well balanced. The rear? EVERYONE I ever meet loves the back end of a '67 Chevelle!!! It was a hard car to beat in the looks department. The Chevelle's were smooth and a lot more aerodynamic looking... Look at them from the side. The Dodge looks like it is putting on the brakes like, No, no not so fast!! The Chevelle looks again, smooth, fluid and sweeping!

You’d think Dodge could afford moving pictures. They really screwed up trying to compare the styling of the Coronet to the Chevelle. Not only does the Chevelle kick Coronets ass in that department, the Coronet is just damn ugly. I really like that they compare price by saying it’s only a few bucks a month after a down payment. In other words, don’t mention how much more the Coronet costs, just politician talk your way around the question.

Why did Chrysler stick with such asinine marketing in these years? I pity the poor salesman who had to sit through this idiocy. Great cars, they're lucky the marketing dept. didn't bankrupt them then. I'm old enough to remember the 'Dodge rebellion', which in those turbulent times, was like gasoline on a charcoal grill for Mr. and Mrs. Average American. The cars deserved better--much better.

They were all nice! And GM had a lot of options for everything!!!!! I had a 1967 Pontiac GTO that I bought used in October 1978. It had 74,600 miles on the odometer. In October in 1980 when I reluctantly sold it, it had 116,000 miles on it. My entire experience owning that car was a blast. Only thing I regretted was not listening to the advice of a man in Mendham, NJ coming out of the liquor store at Foodtown. He said, "You will want to make sure you replace the timing chain on it." I heard him, but did not have it checked out. On my birthday in June, 1979 I was heading west on I-80 in Pennsylvania (near Clarion) when the timing chain went out. All Hell broke loose!! I had her totally fixed once I reached my destination in western Ohio at my Aunt and Uncle's home in New Bremen... But I regret not replacing the timing chain at my local dealership, McDonald Pontiac in Morristown, NJ!! I also had three (non SS396 model) Chevelle Malibus... Fun cars too, just not crazy fast like the GTO was with the 400!!!! Oh, do I miss those times!! Now, giving Mopar its' fair due, I had a friend at the time, one Jim Nienstedt of Mendham, a classmate of mine. His whole family had old cars. When we first started driving at 17, he had one 1966 Dodge Coronet 500 2dr hardtop (white with a black bucket seat interior, 3 spd Torqueflite Auto, and a 361. I knew it would fly and impress the crap out of me (and make me feel anemic in my tired 195 hp/283 whose odometer I was sure was turned back! But I never really knew whether that 361 was a 2bbl or a 4 bbl. His family had bought it from a Mrs. Johnson. The car had only 36,000 miles on it when I first drove in it. That car left me really having a liking for the 1966-67 Coronet 500's... One day I found myself really digging the 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T's... You could get a 440 or a 426 Hemi in them. In the Coronet 500, you could get a base 225 slant six (but why would you do that?!!), 318 standard V8 (but again, why unless you were short on funds, would you do that?), the 383... Now we're talking (and you know, you probably could have still gotten the 361 in the '67 also)--- On the 500's you could have gotten a 440 as well. Maybe even, the Hemi.... Those days must have been fun going to the dealerships!!!!!!!!
