Those 4.56 rear gears in the Chevelle does wonders for it. Man you can hear the tires chirping in every gear. GTO was great too.

Agree. Put that 4.56 in the GTO and the outcome would have been different

The gearing makes the difference. I went from 4.56 to 3.50. Time was a second slower.

I'm a Pontiac guy but those big heads on that L78 with the 4.56 gears and that mechanical cam, you know it's going to win. It's about what I expected, close through the 60 foot with the GTO maybe having a minute advantage but once the Chevelle starts breathing, well that's why it almost ran 110mph. And a LeMans Blue 69 Chevelle is one of the best looking cars ever made.

That 408 lift cam in the GTO is no match for a 520 lift solid lift on the other end.

If I had to live with one of them everyday, I'll take the GTO. It ran solidly in the mid to low 13's without slicks. It just looks better to me in every respect than the chevelle

The higher compression engine plus the higher rear end gears are always going to win. Great to see these cars move like that these days.

With those trap speeds vs ET, the Chevelle was definitely having traction issues and STILL getting it done.

If you knew engines, you'd realize that the 400 wouldn't last long. It had a cast crank. Only the 389 and the 421 had steel cranks. The rods were know to break too.

@@rickuyeda4818 You are talking about racing the engines. Regular use on the street they did just fine. If you were going to raise a Pontiac you would go with an aftermarket block, Forge steel crank et cetera. They race these cars now with up to 3300 horsepower. Several pontiac engine builders around the country. Considering the company has been gone as long as it has, these businesses are doing better than they ever have. I like the brand and you won't change my mind.

@@rickuyeda4818 Do a bit more reading. All Pontiac street engines including the 389 and 421 had cast cranks. Only the 389 & 421 Super Duty engines from the early 60s and the over the counter RAV engines had forged cranks. Even the 73/74 455 Super Duty engines had a cast crank even though they had a bit more work done on them. 400 H.O. engines were great for street light racing because of the early torque. Worked good too with Highway gearing. A lot of GTO Forum guys like 3.23 gears with them. Also for manual transmission comparissons. Pontiac used Hurst shifters stock. Not saying that a tuned up L78 with headers isn’t a fire breathing monster. Because it is

I raced a 396 Chevelle once back in about '88. I was in a '74 Lemans with a 400. It wasn't pretty. From my perspective it looked like an 18-wheeler hit that Chevelle from behind. I mean his car jumped that violently when the driver decided he'd rather look at my Lemans in his rear-view mirror instead of his side window. And that's just what he did. Looked at my car WAAAY back in his rear-view mirror. But my car looked a lot better than his did. :-D

The difference in these races seemed to be the rear end in the chevelle. But both recorded impressive 1/4 mile times and both are beautiful cars from the muscle car Era. I've always been a Mopar guy but always appreciated an outstanding muscle car no matter what brand. The GTO and the Chevelle are definitely two of the best!

That '69 LeMans Blue Chevelle is similar to one that I once owned, except mine had the Parchment (white) interior: white seats, door panels, and headliner with black dash, steering wheel, console, and carpet. Keeping the valves lashed on a regular basis got to be a royal PITA, but when it was fully tuned with fresh plugs & points, she ran like a raped date. also, I only had 3:73 rear gears in mine, not the 4:11's. Never took it down the strip, so I don't know what she would've clocked. 😀👍🇺🇸

I wonder where you are from because you have a lot of races at Mid Michigan Motor Plex. I live in Michigan and would love to go there, but it's a long drive from Romeo. Keep it up Mr. You do a really great job, I enjoy each and everyone. And thank you.

It may have looked like it but unless it had the L78 and 4.56 gears it didn't run like it the 325/396 350/396 were good engines but the L78 was a different beast with higher compression and a solid mechanical camshaft and being only 396 cubic inches it liked being revved in the upper rpm range more so than other larger big blocks and liked 4.10-4.56 gearing

They extrude hone the intake and exhaust manifolds, increase cubic inches. There's a Corvette in FAST that looks stock but runs a 540 BBC. In this class, automatics rule. A couple of cars run 9's.
