This race was more like it was back I'm the day. Both cars seemed to be unmodified, and actually stock. The times were about what they got back in the 60's. Fantastic race from two beautiful muscle cars. Thanks again for letting us view these on KZbin.

It's like comparing a 50's Les Paul to a 50's Strat, both are awesome. I love all the big guns of the 60s and early 70s, Chevelles, GTOs, Road Runner, the list goes on and on. I could easily come up with 50 cars from that era I would like to own. The list of modern dream cars are so much smaller for me.

I used to own a 1971 Z28 with the European style Camero. It was British Racing green with white stripes. 350 cu with 330hp solid lifter cam, aluminum intake, with a holly 780 carburetor. It was fast, turn 12:73, 107mph in the quarter mile at Milan Dragway. It had the Muncie 4 speed with the Hurst Shifter. It was a beast. Totally unassuming. I worked for the Bennet Bros who ran an A Fueler Corvette, all fiberglass, a “funny” car they called them then. They dyno tuned it the day before. These guys told me to rev it to 6,000 Rpm and side step the clutch..... it launched me like a rocket coming out of the hole a little sideways, but not enough to loose control. I stayed on it and never yielded.... grabbed second gear, and got a little kick but by then, I was already going 85 miles per hour. Third gear, now 98 miles per hour and crossed the finish line at 107 mph. Had the 355 gear from the factory. Wish I would have never sold that car. Same with my SS chevelle, 1966, 396/375 monster, hard to keep this one on the road, light and like riding a bronco, she would jump like a banshee. Great memories of a day gone by.

I like this race because I had both of these cars. My 66 GTO was gold and my 68 GTX was fire engine red. I eventually spun the crank bearings in both of them. They sure were fun. I wish I'd kept some of my cool cars. If only we knew they'd skyrocket in value I'm sure many of us would have managed to stash a few of them but hey, they were so cheap especially by the time they were say, 6 year's old because bank's generally loaned money for cars 5 year's or newer. They didn't cost much new anyway. When I was in my twenties you could find some decent old fixer upper farmhouses for 25,000 or thereabouts and now the prices of a new hot care is way beyond that. Oh how times have changed.

Guys talking about 3.90's vs 3.23's have no idea about how to set up a car for drag racing. I have a '69 GTO with a 455. I run 3.55's and that gives me the fastest trap speeds with the quickest E.T.'s. Switching to 3.23's will increase my trap speed slightly while losing about 1/10th in E.T. Switching to 3.91's I run 1/10th quicker but lose 2 mph and the engine is over revving. 3.73's give identical E.T's and trap speeds as the 3.55's but the engine is revving higher so why waste the motor. A 440 has a lot of torque so I'm betting that the 3.23's are probably about right although 3.55's might knock a tenth off. But these are stock cars, not highly modified drag cars where 4.11's or 4.56's can work with their increased rpm range. When 2 cars run this close it's any bodies race and one mistake on the launch or one mistake on a shift will change the outcome. Both cars ran almost identical times to the original cars back in the day so I am assuming they are both stock. Remember that the GTO has a 389 H.O. so it was a lot hotter then the average 335hp '66 GTO while the GTX had the standard 440 magnum. I'm sure a Hemi wouldn't have been so close. And the GTO has about a 350lb advantage. I'm not talking blueprinted dyno tuned cars but stock cars from 1966 and 1969 respectively and from every road test I have ever seen 13.90's to 14.2's at 100mph is about right for both cars.

@ammoalamo6485
@ammoalamo6485 3 жыл бұрын
Today the myth of the Muscle Car remains, but nobody drives one. Many of the best of them would run mid to high 13s in the quarter, even bone stock. But allow someone other than a museum the time money and interest to own a 60s muscle car today in 2021, and they don’t go original, they get resto-mods with good brakes, suspension, wheels, tires, brakes... and better engine. In the DFW metroplex where I was a teen 1966-69, the big attraction was Green Valley Raceway, a hugely popular dragstrip. It held national and regional competitions, but was also drawing kids who only wanted one run to establish a number to write in their back window with white shoe polish. My GF's bro had a new 68 Plymouth GTX 440, all black, auto and air. I can't remember exactly the time of that GTX except to recall it was well above the mid-13s that I assumed a 440 GTX should run. Maybe he had a 'family car' rear end on it, since he bought it shortly before he got married, with a kid on the way.

It went like hell but had oiling issues. 429 Fords were tough but slow. 428's were fast but fragile. I was there in those days and helped my friends wrench on them all. Although a Mopar man, I had a 70 LT1 Vette and consider that engine the best muscle engine ever built, tough & extremely powerful.

@@nickdulak1837 All Cleveland Engines have an oil issue, if you knew about Real Engines (Fords) you would know it's an easy fix on the Cleveland, too oil the mains and rods first, before the valvetrain. Can easily be done with some hose and some fittings. And you are right about the 71 Boss 351, baddest small block ever !!! Would eat up a 70 LT 1 I ran Cleveland's for years, but i stepped up to a 521 Stroked 460. Put a Good set of heads and a nice solid roller in any 429-460 and you make big power with a strong bottom end.

I own a 2006 GTO and while it may not be the most appealing vehicle with an iconic brand name, I've always believed Pontiac was the best car that GM made. I've owned over 10 different Pontiacs, 2 of which are/were GTOs. I will never buy any other type of "fast" vehicle.

I had a '66 GTO back in the early '70's. It was solid gold in and out and had the 389/330 hp with a damned POWERGLIDE (2 sp.) tranny. The tranny was its downfall. It made for fairly sick acceleration and it drank premium leaded gasoline like crazy. It wouldn't have turned in this E.T. or even close. It had fairly decent performance for a muscle car, I guess, but I just cruised around in it and never actually raced it. I got many compliments on just how drop dead gorgeous it was! 😁

the GTX with 323 rear ? that gear ratio is for a "Station wagon and fuel economy",... the 3.90 gear on the GTO that's for drag racing !,A numerically higher axle ratio provides a mechanical advantage to send more of the engine's available torque to the rear tires, GTX's had the 3.91, My guess that was a "satellite" clone GTX anyway, a good "means nothing" race

My dad had a '69 GTX 440 automatic. He said it came with 4.10's or 4.11's but didn't like the fuel mileage so he switched to a 2.72 rear end. He said even with that there wasn't much that could hang with him. Not sure how tuned his motor was but he claims he just did some head work. the only race he talks about ever losing was to a '68 383 Roadrunner. He said he smoked the tires leaving the line and the Roadrunner didn't and took off, was catching the guy but couldn't quite get him by the finish.
@dodgecummings12v
@dodgecummings12v 7 жыл бұрын
why a 2.72??? Who expects a big gtx to get good fuel mileage let alone with a pumped up 440,hahaha. I have a buddy that was told by some summit part representatives to put 2.86 in his 72 4-speed 454 nova. Smokes the clutch just trying to take off, way too high of gear. So to get around the problem he wants to install a 6-speed manual. I told him to install some 3.73 or 4.10 with 6 gears and then he would be killing cars down low and keep it up on the big end but wont listen,haha.

He said he wanted better mileage. I can imagine it did improve over the 4.11's that were in there. not sure how hot the motor was but it maybe it was juiced pretty good if he was still out running everybody with those gears like he said. Also, he said he tried to find top end on it after putting those high gears in and never could find it. Speedo goes to 150 on those cars and he said it was buried one night and still climbing and he just finally gave up.
