I owned one these honeys back in high school and loved that car. Only had the 289, but I went through that engine, bolt by bolt, and built it up to a 347 before "stroker" engines were a thing. I static balanced the rods/pistons (including grinding the rod forge lines), then sent out the whole engine to have it professionally prepped. I had so much fun putting that together w/ my father making sure nothing was left undone. He taught me how to rebuild/tune the Q-jet, rebuild the diff & T-10 transmission. I was truly in love w/ that car. Sadly, it got taken out by a semi running through a light and I'm lucky to be alive. smh I admit to crying right there at the crash site, walking around my decimated baby in horrified disbelief. sniff I didn't get another car for two or three years, after that, I was so bummed. lol

Nice story. Madison NJ isn’t far from me. Backing in to someone’s car as a way to teach them to not park in the driveway is an extremely stupid thing to do whether you served in the military or not. That’s the only annoying thing about this story.

I had an identical car for 24 years. Although it was a 67 model. Same color, body, engine. Same thrill EVERY DAMN TIME I started it up. Something about the sound of a 390 with glasspacks. Mine was uglier than this Bullet car when a guy offered me 17 thousand for it. I sold it. But the thrill isn't gone.

Yeah this is a bad ass cars.I wished they could have saved both 68 mustangs they used in the movie. The chase scene mustang l believe was destroyed. You can tell by the radio antenna locations. The auction bullitt has the antenna on the right front 1/4 panel. The chase scene car the antenna is on the right rear1/4 panel,and was telescopic. Wow imagine how much both could have been worth.

You need to remember that this was just a daily driver for the family until it broke down. In the 70's this was just another mustang. It was parked and basically just sat around. It's possible the damaged valence panel and grille were just tossed for the same reason.
@daleostrom3613
@daleostrom3613 5 жыл бұрын
Non of these cars had any value in the 70s. In 1976 I bought a rust free 67 GT fastback 390 4 speed car with every option, for $750. (needed a paint job). That is why the value of these cars has gone so high. (people drove them, and threw them away) I still have mine.

@harveymushman8209 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry people but you're missing my point. The Father bought the car in 1974 for $6000, unheard of in those days for a used car. The Ad in Road&Track when it was in the classified section stated it was the real movie car. In 1977 Steve McQueen offered to buy the car back. Car collectors and magazines have been searching for this car since mid eighties. A magazine writer in 1991 snuck into the horse barn where it was stored and photographed it in it's dilapidated condition. The engine had to be rebuilt because it was seized 3 years ago. Basically they knew what they had and treated it like s**t. I'm so glad it's back in the limelight and the family is selling it. Hopefully it goes into a museum!!

My thinking is EVERY part of this car be it the ORIGINAL crumpled bumper, grille, or even old piston rings are worth bulk coin. Sure hope he kept them as I reckon they'd sell like hotcakes. Even if someone didn't mount them up say on a shed wall you could make pendants or something out of the steel with a nice certificate of authenticity. I wonder what % of the car is exactly the same as when Steve drove it, that matters IMHO. So far front bumper, some engine parts incl. air cleaner/filter assembly, exhaust(?), grille, front valance, steering wheel, gearknob aren't as per Bullitt. Still a massively cool car, please don't get me wrong, just think at this level of investment that kind of questioning and consideration is very important. Wouldn't it be epic to see both cars side-by-side... Jay Leno's Garage ???? Cheers !

When the producer had the chase scene car built for the original Bullet movie(probably that car) him and Steve McQueen went to Carrol Shelby and said build the Engine,Carrol said why? They explained to Carrol they wanted it to be realistic and they played with the Charger and the Mustang and the Charger was so much faster and quicker than the Mustang there was no way it would be realistic.. So Carrol said well first off those are 390 cars we really need 427 side oilers to keep up with a 440. Carrol was told no our budget is not going to allow that so do what you can with the 390’s .. Carrol threw every bolt on and best isky cam he had in his arsenal and Carrol said its better but the Chargers 440 will still eat the Mustang and spit it out..Steve McQueen said we played with both cars before we shot the chase scene and yes the Mustang felt better and sounded better with the Shelby treatment but the Charger still outran it in the 1/4 mile and on a road race course.But the Mustang was way more drivable he said. The Charger was bone stock and it had so much body roll and even the stock skinny tires were horrible.So he said he was glad he was driving the Mustang..

It’s nice the car was preserved but in the end it’s a state of mind. The actual product isn’t going to be worth that. They just bought the story with it. You could own this can and drive it and you have a old mustang. Nothing special about it but the fact that it was used on a old movie. That’s big bucks for a mustang and while the movie might have pioneered something it is only worth the story. I’ll take a fully restored gt500 anyway for way less.
