Most street legal drag and exhibition style events always use the Sportsman (.500) tree. It’s the NMRA/NHRA and other big league type stuff that typically use the Pro Tree (.400). And I wouldn’t say he cut a .500 lol that’s actually pretty terrible reaction time if someone understands you wrong aka doesn’t spend much time looking at ambers and greens. They’ll just think it took the guy half a second to cut his light lol. Typically we’d say he cut a “double zero” if a guy hit the tree (or arm drop) dead on balls around here, that’s not literal accurate math everytime, but it’s a widely used term.

@@ericmadx3063 you can see the the lights on boards trip first on the 5.0 lane then a split second later the red cars lane lights up board meaning he went through trap second. Common man. Yeah he had a hell of a launch. If both cars were same there red mustang driver would’ve smoked the other guy. But yeah the 5.0 did pass him on the big end.!

As someone that has had foxbodies, tuners, 60s muscle cars and dragged them, I will say that the excitement from ripping a car with no power steering, drum brakes and a nice small block is totally different than a new car.

If I were a somewhat wealthy man in this day & age (and, I'm mature), I'd like to have a '66 fastback Mustang with a 289 tuned to within an inch of its life. An engine really crackling at idle. Four speed, of course. Hell, I wouldn't even abuse the engine, just enjoy those lovely V-8 sounds.

You got it man! I used to own a 65 I bought 27 years ago that i spent 2 years building. Dropped a 351 built to a 357 plus had juice. I was tuning the car for the 3 weakened of the drag 1/8 and the car shifted losing traction mid ways into the wall. Totalled the whole left frame. Made me sick. I ended up selling it for a fraction of the cost of what i had in it. Made me sick I guess we all have regrets. Maybe I should of just kept the car street only and not both haha.

In Australia Road Racers are getting 600 hp out of a 289, and over 8,000rpms. They sound unbelievable. 289s rev very high and stay together. My 65 has a Tremec.

They were all torque. Man I tell you people of this time don't know the torque the cars had back in the days of old school. I litery seen Muscle cars stock twist the rear ends. Shit in high school we all used to meet up at a old parking lot and place beer cans down and jump over them with the front tires. This was stock.

I wish I still had my 1967 Square back Mustang., it had a 1970 351 Clevland engine, OK Kustom headers, Offenhauser intake, modified 750 Holley double pumper, MSD ignition, Sheiffer flywheel and clutch, Hurst shifter, 9' Ford rear end with 4.86:1 Zoom gears

I owned several 289 Mustangs as a young man, including one real fast back K code (aka HIPO). You really could'nt get more than about 335 HP out of them without putting bigger valves in the heads. Back in the 60's the go to were the Chevy 1.90 intake valves with lots of porting work. Then with a max setup you could get around 400 HP.

People think they need a huge engine to make power. I had a 66 comet with the 289. Never thought it was lacking anything. A mild cam and a 4 barrel intake is all you need.

Wow that '68 cut a perfect light. At competitions back in my day the track would award a cash prize for whoever had a .500 or perfect start for that day's competition. It wasn't always won and would build up until someone cut a perfect light.

I love the sound of new school muscle but it never compares to that old school carbed long duration high lift cam old school sound. If they could make some really basic high lift long duration cams for this new stuff without all the VVT and extras they would probably sound insane shit would not be very streetable with such large intake volume and straight runners.

I have a 1987 LX Mustang with a solid roller cam 347, C4 with 4000 stall converter, 8.8 with 4:10’s. I’m a Chevrolet guy through and though but even I know, Foxbody is hard to beat and mine shits all over the new stuff on the street!

Nothing really special. I've changed it up a bit since then. Just long tubes, Victor jr intake, demon 650 carb, mild cam, 411 gears, 3700 stall converter and 3 inch exhaust

@@nathanalcorta That’s all it takes. The little 289s really can get it done. I’ve got a 70 Maverick with a home built 289 that absolutely gets down and has embarrassed ALOT of 302 cars. Simple build on mine as well; Keith Black 4.000 bore piston with a -14.70cc Dome on a 5.090 rod, micro polished factory 289 crank, AFR 165s as cast, custom grind small base cam- 227/241. .551/.535. @ 112LSA, Weiand Street Warrior intake with a Barry Grant 650 Demon, MSD 6AL, Hooker Competition Longtubes 1 5/8 primaries with a 3” collector, 2.5” mandrel bent stainless true dual setup back to 2.5” knock off magnaflow mufflers. Ran it mostly on 100LL aviation fuel and made some serious steam. The 2941lb race weight of my little Mav helps a lot too lol.

had a 65 convertible gt hipo 299 4spd.,411 gears . had engine built into a sprint car motor! the guy who did the build built sprint car and dirt track race motors and he said he built it the same way and they made about 425 hp. this was in 1974.beat a lot of muscle cars with that motor!
