1969.Pennsylvania State University. Penn State. Amazing footage by student 16mm documentary filmmakers recording just a few weeks in the life of the University in January of that year. Of course it was the year after Martin Luther King was assassinated as was Robert Kennedy. And just years after Pres. John Kennedy was assassinated. The Vietnam War protests in America had split the country. Students were in protest on just about every campus - right and left. Free speech was a major issue at that time. The right to say what you felt even if it disagreed with others and offended others. The parallels to what is happening on college campuses today are obvious. What is free-speech? What is cancel culture? What is politically correct? Back then, a photograph of a nude John Lennon and his wife on the cover of a LP record album provoked this incident as did the desire by some Penn State black students to honor the death of Malcolm X by putting the University flag at half mast. This moment in time fascinates me in part because of its relevance to debates taking place across America at this time.

Yeah. Sure. But what we do with the ideas in the speech and what we do with this nation and society is what matters. We could say, "hello good day. " and respond, "Good day to you sir." Or we could say, "What are you wearing?! That shirt is so stupid." And respond, "Well f*** you!" And people would use their words poorly and no one could stop them from making america mad and sad and insane. Then what? We need more than rights we need morality and responsibility.

If there’s one thing that everyone should be able to agree on, it’s that free speech is a virtue. Unfortunately, many groups will only advocate for free speech when they don’t have control over the cultural institutions of power. Once they gain control over those institutions, they often no longer see free speech as being beneficial to their cause. If you don’t believe in free speech for those who disagree with you, then you don’t believe in it at all.

The college i work for is over 60k a year without books and dorm fees and meals, over 60k. That college takes the approach that their students are adults who family is paying an insane amount of money for them to go there, so the school is Very hands off ancient make any demands on students. Because they are Paying a Lot of money to go there. So you don't treat customers like prisoners and you don't treat adults like kids. The whole problem in America is every one of us is from some type of refugee from an empire or dictatorship or caliphate or communist country ,so its in Americans DNA to want to be oppressed. So Americans perpetrate oppression onto others. Our government does it. Rules rules rules, fines ,permits, tickets. Watching you everywhere you go,clamping down on everything so people can't just live. America is like 1984 now.thats what the covid is all about. Muzzling the people. Shut up,stay home, don't talk to anybody, dont question the official narrative. And as a people we Want that. Subconsciously. It's so engrained in us as s society. That's why it's reinforced in tv and movies and violence everywhere you look. Negative vibes are the American way. We don't want to be free. They are mind programming us to love the matrix. The hippies woke the world, then the world fell back to sleep when Reagan took office. Wake up America! The bad guys are winning

We had bigger things to protest back then but a lot of it went off the rails too: weekly domestic eco-terrorist attacks on infrastructure (Edward Abby)...not as bad as industrial polluted rivers catching on fire and such maybe, that happened too back then, all young American 'men' had to consider the lottery, aka. draft into a senseless meat grinder in Vietnam... self righteous stealing/looting, monthly airliner hijackings, far higher serious crime rate. Our blood lead levels were much higher back then.

Celebrate the dodgers, the fraggers and all others who stood up against imperialism. I am sick of how Americans celebrate the lackeys of their empire. Edit: Sorry, I was insulting at first. Edited it out. I just get angry when I see the mindless brainwashing that the USA is spreading freedom around the globe and we need to celebrate their valiant efforts, when in reality it's a bout rich people's yacht money. Don't join the army (if you possibly can, I understand some do because of lack of perspectives), don't join the police, fudge the system.

David Hoffman, thank you for this short doco. I think it is one of the best I have seen of your productions. I am an Australian and I have never been to the USA, I was born in 1961 and I have older siblings(sisters) who are 5 and 6 years older than myself. One sister was caught up with the hippie movement here in Australia the other sister was more conservative and they were always arguing with each other over then current issues but I think that did bring them together was music, like the Beatles. I remember a lot growing up in the 60s, surrounded by older cousins, and the worry they feared of being drafted to fight in the Vietnam war. The television news on TV at 7PM on our national broadcaster used to scare the crap out of me as a youngster in the 60s, seeing horrible bloody images from the Vietnam war gave me nightmares, on the other and seeing articles about flower power and hippies confused me. Anyway thanks for this doco, its a good one mate.

The difference, as you know, is that university students in 1968 were trying to open and expand free speech and multiple opportunities for alll willing to work for it. Today, cancel cultuure colleges claim free speach by proclaiming what cannnot be said by anyone outside their specific group. Our generation battled against segregation, while today young people for some reason are wanting segregation under a false narrative of personal identity. No. Today people complain about not having free speech because they don't like to be criticized for the things they say despite having ample freedom to say those things AND complain about a lack of free speech at the same time. It strikes me as rather odd that I never stop hearing from the people who claim to be being silenced.

@@TheOneAndOnlyFloridaMan These social media websites have algorithms, and they had a big problem of funneling people into more and more extreme ideas. They tried to put a stop to it by actually doing something about the rising hatred and bigotry. This isn't unique to the right. Left wing radicals have been getting bans and the such for a long time now. I see a lot of complaints about getting censored, but have yet to see them actually censored. A lot of the stuff I've seen called censorship is actually just fact-checking. And there are claims that their pages are having reduced traffic because of the social media companies, but this simply isn't true. "engagement on Trump’s Facebook page compared to now-President Biden’s page during the three months leading up to Election Day. Trump elicited 87 percent of the total 307 million post interactions between the two, compared to Biden’s 13 percent." This is a systematic campaign of disinformation to sway the narrative. Per usual. Source: static1.squarespace.com/static/5b6df958f8370af3217d4178/t/6011e68dec2c7013d3caf3cb/1611785871154/NYU+False+Accusation+report_FINAL.pdf#page=21

@@LisaRichards_123 - The term I am quoting that you used "hermaphrodites" has been deemed as insensitive hate speech for quite some time now. After the student uprisings of the 60s, the teaching of civics, and certain aspects of world history, were no longer taught in the same way, (it's easier to suppress your rights if you don't understand them, or even know what the are). And by the late 70s we had the Federal Department of Education.

The keyword here is "debate" and this process is seemingly largely missing on today's universities, when speakers hold campaigns on these campuses. The students have every right to protest/critique speech from right-wing extremists and Trump apologists whining about not being able to blast their propaganda over loud speakers to a mass of students. However, on the flip side, this means that left-wing ideologues should also be challenged on their ideas instead of being blindly accepted; and without automatically disparaging those who seek to critique those ideas. It is asinine to believe that one side has ALL OF / ONLY the best ideas.

Mr. Hoffman, this was fascinating. I live in State College, and I work for PSU and this was all completely new to me. It was eerie seeing these places one can visit today, and though the tenor is completely different now the discussion is still alive and well. I .. do know that some time in April 1970 there was a small insurrection and some damage was done to the PSU President's home (who, after this, moved off-campus). The incident stemmed I believe from some sort of sit-in at Old Main that went south with the State Police being called in. “Old Main” is where the executive offices are for the University, and Old Main lawn continues today to be a hub for civil rights and free speech. The discussion of your personal views of free speech really resonated with me. I agree. Thank you for sharing this with us!

It is not about "speech that others find offensive" but about creating a leveled playing field. This has been done by allowing people to present their arguments then and this is done by preventing people from derailing the debate now. Holding people accountable for what they spread is absolutely necessary for having free speech.
