I have never seen a solid color Rebel Machine. It is a sweet car though I can see some flaws the owner don't know about I'm sure so I will keep them to myself as not to worry him. Quite possibly the finest example in existence. Verrrry rare. That 390 sounded bad-ass...'cause it was....it could run with the best 'em. When the Rambler boys showed up in these things it confounded the big-three guys. They wouldn't admit then but they'll tell you now... these AMC's were often more than just competitive.

What a cool Rebel Machine. Has to be one of the lowest-mileage examples still out there. The Machine option lived on in 1971 on the Matador. It was available with the 360 or 401 but didn't get much advertising ink, so consequently not many were sold. There are very few known survivors (I've seen one or two in magazine features but have never encountered one in person) and a few people have also built some nicely done tributes using 71-73 Matador coupes. Thanks Lou!!
@loucostabile6 жыл бұрын
Hi AMCmachine, Glad you think this one is "cool" :-) You're welcome, Lou
@AMCmachine6 жыл бұрын
There's some speculation the Machine package was even carried into 1972 for the Matador. They can't be identified by VIN or numbers; only possible if someone had the paper trail, window sticker, order forms, etc. I saw a Yuca Tan 1972 online that had turned up a while back. It seemed to fit the bill--401, TorqueCommand auto, heavy duty suspension, etc. Even some AMC dealers weren't aware of the little-known package in 1971 so it's possible a few slipped out in 72 also. The same site reports that 3 known Matador Machines have turned up--one that was fully restored and repainted in non-original red has appeared in some magazines. A blue 360 car surfaced later on. There was also a NASCAR commemorative edition for the 73 and the big engines remained optional. Another rare bird that would be tough to verify if found! Keep up the great work. We enjoy it!!
@kotjmf19685 жыл бұрын
Like the 1971 MACHINE GO PACKAGE, without the build sheet or the ORIGINAL window sticker or build order, ONLY an original 4 speed Matador 2 door would be a genuine Machine Go package car. Anyone could order a 401 with a torqueflite as normal options.

Solid color and / or automatic transmission equipped Rebel Machines are considered less desirable as most want them as advertised with the $75.00 optional Red-White-Blue paint and the standard 4 speed. They have sold above $60,000.00. Solid color / auto trans would fetch considerably less unless the right guy was interested.

hey MC5 FAN, in november 1984 i turned down an offer to buy a 1971 Matador, 2 door hardtop, 401 engine, which had a rather huge decal that read 'Go Machine' (on the lower part of the front fender, between the wheelwell and the door) from a guy who apparently had no place to store it for the wintertime and nowadays i just realize how unique such a car would be in any classic car show... Please don't hesitate to share any info you may have about this 'Go Machine' option (or was it just an 'appearance' package ?
@kotjmf19686 жыл бұрын
It had either a 360 or 401, same wheels and other things the Rebel Machine had. No decals, no scoop, just a performance/handling package. The only way that you could get a 4 speed in a Matador. 1 year only on that too. The red one you see with the Rebel Hood scoop and tach is a custom job. 1971 did not have that stuff. ZERO ornamentation, no decals on a Machine Go Matador.
