Found the same engine from 1968 in a barn (my sons...). It was stuck and not touched for approx 40 years. Some (alot) TLC and a lot of help from this video it's now up and running. Still have to check the waterpump. But the feeling get it started. Priceless! Thanks for the instructional video!

I’ve had 5 of those exact little motors, from ‘69-‘75. Generally a good video, however I see three points of improvement. A) Regarding points- don’t disassemble them, remove them as a unit. That way you won’t touch the actual point surface, & get oil/grease/dirt on them, which is detrimental. If you do, wipe the surface with acetone. From the Evinrude service manual- the word “top” on the crankshaft cam bushing, which opens the points IS NOT there for setting them. That bushing can be put on upside down, (& then doesn’t work). The word “top” is only there so the factory guy doesn’t install the bushing upside down. It doesn’t always line up with the Center of the bump on the cam. Always look closely at the bushing, it’s easy to discern the top of the “bump” which what you use to set the points. B) Regarding foot oil- no matter how much water was inside, the oil won’t look milky if the motor has been sitting. After a few days the water will separate out, & sink to the bottom. It will only look milky if the motor was running shortly before draining. You did it right by watching closely as you removed the bottom drain screw. If more than a beercapful or two of water runs as soon as you remove that screw, you need to seal the gear case, even though the oil won’t be milky if the motor has been sitting. The seal you replaced is not the only path for water ingress. The shift shaft,(b visible beside the driveshaft), has an O-ring that also commonly leaks. Also there is a seal on the propeller shaft. If you have water, change all three. C) Idle mixture knob. You can’t just turn it back & forth & expect the motor to change. You have to turn it 1/8 turn, then let the motor run for 15 seconds to see the change. That little plastic knob just slides over splines on the shaft, it can be pulled off & re-centered. If the matching splines inside the plastic get worn off, turning it doesn’t actually turn the shaft. Remove the motor cowling, & observe the brass shaft actually turns as you turn the knob. I’ve seen two motors with that issue. Don’t waste time/parts/$$ suspecting a carb issue, when it’s the plastic knob. Unfortunately, that knob is about $25. One last item regarding the starter. When pricing a sale motor, make sure the starter works. Replacing a rope is cheap, the spring for those is now about $107! I wouldn’t replace the fuel pump “just because”. They are very reliable, & a new one is $100. Just undo that large Center screw, there is a fine SS screen under it. Clean that. The Chinese replacement pumps are cheap, however, the bodies are OK, but the gasket/diaphragm are crap, they only last a year. If you really have fuel pump issues (if the motor is starved for fuel, but runs OK if you keep pumping the bulb), don’t throw away Avery good pump for a junk E-Bay Chinese knockoff. Just rebuild the original quality pump, a new diaphragm is only about $10. Google Leroy’s Ramblings for how to rebuild it.

I bought this engine new in 1972 along with a boat and trailer! I enjoyed it many years but ended up buying an inboard/outboard boat and retired this one! It sat for years and I just got it out and had a mechanic go through it! Thank you for this in depth explanation of what makes this old motor work! I think I could do some work on it now if something breaks!

I've caught over 1000 trout/salmon using that same motor over the years. It's in amazing shape. Always carefully stored and cared for. Best built motor ever in my opinion. @@Michaelsbackyardmarina - I got it started today. The gauge on my compression test is dead. I cleaned the spark plugs and it appears to have good spark. I changed the fuel lines and connector at the motor. And, changed the gearcase oil, it was black, no water. Then I filled a trash can with water, under the engine, connected the fuel tank, pumped the bulb, then shot some starting fluid in the carb and start pulling. Without the choke on, it tried to fire on the third pull. I turned the idle screw to full rich, sprayed more starting fluid in the carb. After about 4-5 pulls it started and ran! I checked the water pump exhaust and no water was coming out, do I shut her down. I pulled the lower unit, and sure enough, the impeller is bad. I have an impeller, shaft seal, thermostat and gasket on order now.

I like your videos, very clear and to the point. Thanks for your tips! My 1965 Johnson 6hp looks just like the lower gearcase you show here. I replaced my starter pull rope also but, I did mine a little differently. I got a new gauge for my compression tester, and I have 80 psi in each cylinder. The Drive Shaft Housing, bearing seal you mentioned, was a BEAR to remove on my unit. I removed the housing before removing the seal. Still, I had to destroy the seal in order to get it out! the new seal went in fine, after cleaning up the housing plate. I'm waiting on a new Drive Shaft Housing gasket, in order to put it back together.

For that much money, I would check into replacing the points with solid state ignition. I had an ancient 6hp Briggs and Stratton I couldn't get points for, and I rigged solid state up on it. It ran so good, the fella I bought it off of bought it back after only a year later. The new spark was sharp and clean; better than new.

👍🏻🗣 You have a GREAT attitude and Outlook on life ‼️😎Once I saw you modify that bolt I subscribed ✅🗣 Thank you sooo much for taking the time to make this video as it has helped IMMENSELY 🤗 I just pulled a 1987 4hp Evinrude out of the garage that someone gave me over 5 years ago and it is extremely hard to find any info on it. The fuel mix is 100 to 1😱 But I guess that was not too unusual and was widely used in the 30’s ? It also does not pee like a regular outboard of today and I’m still not sure if it is a steam exhaust cooling I kinda think it is because there is a metal guard about 1/3 up from the prop on the shaft. It has a 2 piece cover (cowling) held on with about 6 screws on each side. A REAL hassle if you have problems on the water. Made to be sold in Belgium 🇧🇪. Must be a Venturi type carburetor because the butterfly valve is in the middle of the throat and regulates the throttle. Got it running but want to make it as good as possible and appreciate learning from your videos👍🏻. 🤗🙏🏼 Retired and would love to supplement my income fixing these smaller motors up like new.
@JoeBlowski
@JoeBlowski Жыл бұрын
Ignore manuals and labels that specify 100 to 1 which is planned obsolescence, because that is far too little oil. Back in the 30's it was 16 or 24 to 1 because they had bushings instead of bearings and inferior oil. 50 to 1 is a very popular recommendation but I believe 32 to 1 is the best choice for any two stroke engine.

The Johnson is now painted white. I used rattle can epoxy white. It turned out great. After a few days of letting the paint harden I removed it from my stand and beganthe decreasing and sanding the other motor. It took about an hour carefully masking everything off that I dis not wish to paint.After wiping it down with denatured alcohol I gave it its first coat. I started by giving it a light coverage then waited about an hour until the second coat. I plan to give it about four coats today. The engine covers are off...not painted them yet. Around the engine covers bottom edge is that rubber seal. On cover the seal is white and on the other cover its black. On want to male the white on black by either using permanent marker ot black shoe dye. Before painting the seal needs to be pushed away from the cover to get paint behind it. I'll probably push a piece of rope all the way around between the seal and fiberglass engine cover. That should push the seal out to create the gap I need to spray behind it. It should be about time to give that second coat on the lower half now. One of the motors needs the rope changed as it shows some where. Thanks for the video that.

I have two 6 HPs. One is Evinrude, the other a Johnson. Both identical of course...only a few years apart. The Evinrude is blue...the Johnson is green. I'll paint both white as I am going to set both on my Tracker V-14. Anyway.....while sanding out a few scratches on the Evinrude I noticed the undercoat was the same color of the Johnson. So I'm guessing that the unit was originally meant to be the Johnson version. As for connecting them for the twin setup. I bought two hiem joints, a 3/8"- 24 stainless steel threaded rod a 3/8" piece of aluminum tubing and 4 lock nuts. I also made two brackets from angle iron to make the connection at the motor handle. Everything cost less than $30.00. The engine covers also to be repainted white will be dresses up with a set of skeleton fish on both sides. The Tracker V-14 is an awesome small boat...perfect for fishing. The boat and trailer are like new. It had a few scratches on the inside of the boat. I took the boat to a paint shop and they matches the silver paint rattle can style at $20.00 a can. It matched perfectly. I added a bimini top over the 4th of July. It really helped a lot keeping the metal boat cool. Before it was like sitting in an oven. In the near future I want to install a six pole cat-rack, make a live well and some interior LED lights. Sorry about my rambling....I just don't have anyone interested in my project but me. My wife lends a third hand when needed but she works all day. I'm a retired marine carpet installer....Lake Erie.

The water pump will pump water up to the thermostat but it does not seem to get through the water jacket and then the exhaust. I cleaned out the thermostat area and water ingress and egress holes but still does not work. I don’t have a air compressor to shoot air in those holes or up the exhaust. Concerned that there is debris in either the tube or head / water jacket. Any advice or videos that might help?

Where it says " TOP" on the cam means it is the top of the cam so people don't flip it upside down and throw the timing out 180 degrees . The points are supposed to be set at the keyway only for correct gap. Doing it the way you do, throws the timing off 20 degrees and motor will not idle perfect or rev to its peak. Get a manual, or buy a ticket to the game, OK Mikey???

The impeller does not need to be replaced every year. Five years is the normal change time. Do NOT do what a lot of these so clled mechanics are telling you, and that is to turn the impeller into the housing clockwise. That is WRONG turn it counterclockwise then when you turn it over for installation the impeller will rotate in the correct direction. The easiest way is to put the impeller on the shaft first then lower the housing down on the impeller with gentle pressure while turning the shaft in a clockwise direction until the impeller seats itself properly in the housing. Then just bolt the housing down and you are done.. I've been doing this work for more than 55 years, I know what i'm talking about.

Get vid. What is the purpose of the pin at the top of the drive shaft.? Working on one that I guess was remove or forgot to replace. Thanks
@edwardhill6945
@edwardhill6945 Жыл бұрын
That pin ensures about 6 parts that form the lower crankshaft seal don’t fall out when you remove the lower unit & drive shaft. RMD didn’t even mention there is a pin at the top of the driveshaft…& you cannot remove the impeller cup or impeller with that pin in place. He got lucky, the pin was lined up with the S,ot, many DIYers ham fist the unit down, wreck the pin, then don’t bother replacing it because they don’t see what it’s for. Quicker than typing, I found this- a very good explanation for it if the link doesn’t give you the proper video, Google Brandon’s garage Johnson Evinrude 6 HP Lower Removal and Seal Explanation kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpbOoa2wj7iqfNk

When I unplug the lower wire to the plug the motor runs the same but when I unplug the upper plug it dies out ... it has to be the points getting no spark right ?

I have the 1969 6hp model. According to BRP the 69 uses the same impeller as the 72 (same part number) I ordered the same part number impeller that you have that BRP said fit the 69 6hp. When I took the lower unit off the housing was different and the impeller was much smaller. I’m trying to find out if the previous owner replaced the whole housing and got the wrong one and I need to buy and replace the whole housing or if BRP is wrong about the impeller part number.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina I believe I found out that somebody replaced the housing with an impeller and housing for an 79 6hp evinrude. I looked up the impeller for the 79 and sure enough it was the same sized impeller as the one that was in the outboard I have. Apparently the 79 housing and impeller works on all evinrude 6hp’s dating back to the mid 50’s so I will just order an 79 6hp impeller.
