Great car and great video. I was working in the parts department of a Chrysler Plymouth Dealer in 1972. I don't remember ever seeing a Road Runner with the GTX option at that dealership. There were 2 other Chrysler Plymouth dealers in town and one of those had one. I loved that body style when it came out. 1972 was also the year I got married. I met my wife at the dealership. She was the parts and service cashier. That dealership is long gone but I am still married to the same women 46 years later.

Any 72-74 Roadrunner with a 440 4bbl was badged as a Roadrunner GTX. But only the 440 Roadrunners. A 440 4bbl was never available in any 68-71 Roadrunner because it was the base engine in the 67-71 GTX. But the 440 6bbl was available in 69-71 Roadrunners and 70-71 GTX's. Essentially the GTX went from being it's own model in 71 to being a Roadrunner option package in 72-74 when you ordered the 440 4bbl engine

As many have pointed out, the loop bumpers and fuselage body of the '71-72 RR are gorgeous, and the car shown is a beautiful example. It is interesting to note that the body and loop bumpers of this generation Satellite/Road Runner/GTX are unique to the 2 door model. The Satellite was also offered as a 4 door sedan and wagon, but they appear to share little in terms of body panels or bumpers with the 2 door Satellite. As always, great presentation of the car and owner!

Ahhhhh another guy that knows mopar and specifically the almost forgotten mopar 400. . Nice. I had a 1973 SE CHARGER back during high school that was my daily driver. At 14 my grandfather tore a 440 down and told me to build it pan to carb. Told me if it started , the mint condition 73 was mine. Needless to say he had alot of mopars from 2 HEMI Cudas and one challenger One 6 bbl Runner and the 73 Charger along with 2 340 Dusters. Anyhow at 14 i built the 440, we put it in a 66 Charger. It fired right up and he gave me the keys to the 73 400.. It was amazing and that 400 was a STRONG engine. At 16 i built a 1969 6bbl.Road Runner and a 1970 RT/SE CHARGER 440. I still have both of those 2 today plus finishing the small block Duster that took many a big blocks out on Archer ave and back of the yards when more $$ was involved along with the great Strips US 30 DRAGSTRIP , GREAT LAKES DRAGAWAY AND NOW RT 66 DRAGWAY AMONG OTHERS.

Yes, I had a 1974 Dodge Charger Rallye with the 400 Magnum. It was yellow blaze with the rare V6R Red Graded stripe (like the Ford Laser Stripe). It was a 4spd pistol grip to boot. only 105 or 94 made depending on what publication you read. Nice car but it had rust issues. Then I had a 1972 Charger SE with a 400 Magnum. Very strong engine. As you most likely figured out, I am a 71-74 Charger 3rd gen nut.

A rare bird to be sure! 72 was 1 of the lowest production yrs for RRs. at just 7628 for the entire model run. Insurance costs for cars with std BB engines hurt sales. In 73, they went to a std 318, and sales doubled. I like the featured car but would have to have power steering. Nose heavy 440 b-bodies are a pain to drive w/o it, and the ratio is something like 24 to 1, with over 5 turns lock to lock! PS cuts that down to 15.7 to 1 and 3.5 turns. What's interesting is that this car also has the gold carpeting. Black was std. The GTX option included the 440 4 bbl, torqueflight, extra hd suspension and brakes, ( still drums) G 60 15 tires, resonator exhaust tips, and badges. The strobe stripe was std on RRs in several different colors, but was 1 of 3 styles available. The 150 speedo and rally dash was also std on all RRs, tach optional, and so was a clock with trip odometer in its place. U can see the hole in the face plate for the reset knob, if it was so equipped. For 71, Chrysler dropped the wb to 114.9 for 2 drs, from 117. This tightened up the car's handling and lightened the cars slightly, though the increased use of sound deadening and then steel door beams fattened them up over 1970's offering quite of bit. 72 saw the compression of all 440s come down to 8.2 to 1 to run on low or no lead fuel. Cams and ignition timing were also dumbed down. The result was a rated 280 SAE net hp and 380 lbft of torque. 71 saw factory electronic ignition as optional, but was std on all HP engines for 72, and std across the board for all 73 engines. This car has the std RR interior. There was a decor package that used the fake wood grain across the gauge face plate, and into the door panels. That was basically borrowed from the 71 GTX. Options included 2 toned bucket seats in the same pattern, a folding center armrest, or vinyl buckets with cloth inserts. The rear bench would match that if so optioned. As a matter of fact, since Lou mentioned it, the floor mounted seat belt retractor would be a 2dr B body staplement until 78. Early on, this was still only a lap belt, with optional shoulder belt mounted in the roof. Later b's had this floor system, but added a roof retractor shoulder belt, for a 3 point system. In 78, they moved the floor retractor to inside the lower B pillar to increase rear access to that seat. They also added a loop mounted to the side of the bucket seats to help keep the shoulder belt off of the neck, and across the chest for more comfortable driving. Nice find Lou! Thx for sharing!

Gordon Cherry from Chrysler who came up with the idea of using the Road Runner cartoon bird with Plymouth car. Those are called- strobe stripes, and the 440 sticker on the fenders aren't factory. The air grabber hood and tachometer were special order. Only 255 72 model GTX's were built. They were rated at 285 horsepower, but I'm certain that were around 325--350 hp.

@@loucostabile You'er quit welcome. I was lucky enough to own two of these rare cars. My first one was black with red pin stripes. 440 raised hood emblems It had absolutely no options, bench seat, auto on the column. Plain Jane GTX. It came with the 3:55 rear gears. Top speed was 132 mph @ 7200 RPM. Wide open. My second GTX was chocolate brown, and well equipped. Bucket seats, 4:10 Dana posi rear end, 4 speed pistol grip shifter, rear trunk spoiler, factory tach, and got 8-10 mpg. I remember when my friends and I rode around all night. We had to fill up my 26 gallon tank twice in one night. It cost $15 dollars to fill it up, back then. Premium gas was $0.59 cents per gallon back then-- 96 octane. There was no unleaded garbage, like we have today. Some Amoco stations had 101 octane premium. I payed $1800 for the black one and $2100 for the brown one. My brown GTX would do a whopping 116 mph, due to the low geared rear end. Thanks for the trip down memory lane..: )

71 was the last year. 72 is the first year that Mopar dropped all their compression ratios and horsepower and torque numbers. 71 was the last year of the 426 Hemi, 440/6, and 383. In 72 the top engine option was the 440 4bbl...which went from being rated at 370 gross horsepower in 71 to being rated at 280 net horsepower in 72...which probably translated to 325-330 gross horsepower or so. And in 72 the 383 was replaced by the 400...which I never really liked... as the Roadrunner's base engine. Your best bet if you wanted to buy a fast Mopar brand new in 72-73 was probably a 340 Duster/Demon. I believe the 340 was rated at 240 net horsepower in 72-73 which probably translated to 280-290 gross horsepower. So a 72-73 340 Duster/Demon was probably quicker than the much heavier 72-74 440 Roadrunner
