1979 Dodge Lil Red Express vs 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 XL. factory stock drag race, pure stock muscle car drag race
First car is a 1979 Dodge Lil Red Express Truck. The other is a 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 XL. The Dodge has a 360 V8, and the Ford has a 390 V8. The Lil Red Express was rated 225 NET horsepower, while the Galaxie 500 XL was rated 300 GROSS horsepower. The Lil Red Express only came with a LoadFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. The Galaxie has a 4-speed manual transmission. The Galaxie has a set of 3.89 rear gears, and the Express only came with 3.55 gears. Curb weight of the Lil Red Truck is 3815 pounds (this does not include the driver). The weight of the Galaxie WITH driver is 4250 pounds! Dodge only made 5118 Lil Red Express Trucks in 1979. Ford, on the other hand, made 28,141 Galaxie 500 XL hardtop coups in 1965. In November 1977 Hot Rod Magazine tested the Lil Red Express prototype and it ran the quarter mile in 14.70 seconds @ 93 mph. However, the production truck ran 15.71 seconds @ 88.06 mph when tested in June of 1978 due to a milder set of heads. Car and Driver had also assessed the prototype truck in November of 1977 and it went 0-100 in 19.9 seconds, which was the quickest American production vehicle at that time.

It's a shame the Galaxie didn't have the factory 3 speed on the floor. The three speed back in the day was actually faster than the 4 speed. A 3 speed on the column was faster than the 4 speed also. If the car would have had the C-6 autoshifter it would have been faster still. The four speed in those cars was a real nice thing to have and it made the car nice to drive in town but it wasn't that great for racing. It's a shame they put the 360 in the little Mopar because it was a real plug to begin with. The 360 could put out some pretty good power but it needed a good carb that was a big CFM in order to push enough air into it's throat, then with factory headers and a little bit better cam they were a real torque monster and could run with the old 383s. I had a 360 in a Plymouth Trailduster that I built and it really would run nice. It had the posi rear and it was built like I explained above. I used it for the swamp and woods a lot. I once pulled out a pretty large tractor that was bogged down to the axle with that Trailduster. It had gobs of power and torque running through the 3 speed torqueflite tranny. The downside was that it got 10 miles per gallon no matter whether you babied it or ran at 80 mph-still 10 mpg no matter what you did. That is why I didn't keep it. I washed it then took an entire bottle of Armor All and it shined like a new penny, Brought it to the auction in Houston and sold it for $600 more than I paid for it to some Mexicans that took it back to Mexico.

The exhaust stacks were less restrictive as trucks enjoyed more lenient emissions standards at the time. Which helped make Li'l Red the fastest accelerating American production vehicle for 1979. Possibly true for '78 as well.

@@74beeper97 Thanks, I knew I was on the right, er, "track" more or less. Haven't read up on the trivia in a while. I know they had the Trans Am and Corvette licked in acceleration for 1978. An interesting and lesser-known counterpart to the Warlock and Li'l Red was the Midnite Express which was black. Only ever seen one, at Lebanon Valley Dragway in NY. May have been genuine or a home-brew tribute but was cool to see in person either way as they're not well-known to most. I've heard the Midnites came with 400 power but a few 440s were rumored. What info you do find on them seems to vary a bit depending on source. : )

@@74beeper97 So looked into it a little more and a Dodge truck forum states that the Midnite Express was a converted black Warlock and the decals were dealer added along with the stacks. Also says that any available V-8 could be had in them.
@74beeper97
@74beeper97 3 жыл бұрын
@@AMCmachine Midnite's were a dealer prepped truck and were never actually built by Chrysler. Certain dealers were allowed to take a black, 440 powered 2WD, D150 stepside and add the stacks, stickers and wood. That being said, since dealers did whatever they wanted to back then, there were several put together with 318's and 360's. I personally have never seen one with a 400 but they doesn't mean there isn't any out there but they were all supposed to have 440's

A Chrysler-loving friend of ours owned one briefly back in the 90s, I did get a few rides in it. There was one sitting for years in an empty vacant yard around the corner from my house, then the parcel sold and they built a house there so I hope she wasn't junked although it may have been. There was another sitting by someone's house in the next town over from mine; the guy always had Mopars languishing around in various states of condition. Challengers, Chargers, etc. No idea whatever became of any of those. Then there was a Hispanic guy in my neighborhood using a rusted-out Warlock as a work truck into the early 2000s! It was light green. No idea what was in it but some of them boasted the 400 or 440. I doubt the guy had any idea what he had; he probably bought it as a cheap used truck and drove it until it crumbled to dust.

A couple of beautiful vehicles right there. The lines on a 65 Galaxy are just gorgeous. And the Little Red Express was a definite hot rod in 1979. Ford's hottest engine offering in the Mustang was only 140hp and just had a 2bbl. The Z28 was under 200hp and even though the Trans Am had a 400/4 speed option that was 220hp the weak 185hp 403 was the most common engine in those cars and most had a 2.56 rear gear so they ran the quarter mile as long as it took for the earth to orbit the sun!

Dodge LiL Red had 300 hp as well,the 225 was a lie,to run a 4000 lb truck in the 15's is 300 hp..The 78 was a 1 second quicker as tested when new..different heads,intake,carb and more probably 330 to 350 hp! In Mexico in those years they had 300 hp 360 4bbl so that's what it was for the 79 the 78 more like 330 to 350.. Probably pretty even in the weight too,stock the Ford is 3712 and the Dodge is 3815...Usually vehicles are heavier than advertised,fuel etc.. etc.. and 4250 with driver...They have the advertised curb weight usually/shipping weight no fluids that adds over 100lbs..and depending on options etc..etc..

Ok the production Lil Red's did not have the 340 cam or the 850 cfm carb. Them were used in the testing as well as using the W2 heads. None of these heads to the best of their knowledge ever made it out in production. It did have a factory double roller timing chain. The '78 was a tad more wild. The '79 heads had the rotator valves, but no emission holes in the heads or the exhaust headers. I own a '79 and it has been verified by the Chrysler Historical Society.

This was interesting...although neither are musclecars, they both ran hard. The Galaxie ran a strong top end. I had a black '65 just like this one....only it wasn't an XL, and had a 352. Nice car, but not very quick! Thanks for posting.

Dude, love the videos and your thoroughness in the description of each. My question is this: I have seen a couple, but their is a lack of Mustangs racing where you check out the cars. Is this a regional hate on Rustangs? or are they constantly sharting on the track?

These events are sanctioned by the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags. Apparently vintage Mustangs can’t compete in pure stock form. The only small block Mustangs on the PSMCD record chart are a few ultra rare Boss versions and even those are mired beneath a sea of Firebirds, Camaros, Cudas and Ramblers.

My 65 Galaxie looks exactly like that one, same colors in and out, mine is C6 I transplanted in and the 394 FE with 4.33s and a locker best time 12 76 @ 108 my son and I replaced a rusty frame, did all the body work and paint. I built the FE back in 1999 and it is as reliable as the sun to this day. No oil consumption, clean plugs and a CC 780 3310 Holley. I have the double length Mad Dog headers 2,” primary tubes the front 4 are 56 inches long and the rear 4 are 28 inch to the 3.5 inch collectors. It literally wails like a banshee.

A 4 speed in a full sized Galaxie has got to be just as rare as a Lil Red Express! Even still, I was damned impressed how the driver of the truck consistently shaved big numbers off his times. That proves the power is there, and technique is all that's needed. With some more track time and some fine tuning, I bet he breaks into the high 14s. Those E58 L code 360s ran really good for their time. Side note, they used a revised 340 cam which some called the 252 cam, and later, Mopar Performance ungraded that to the .430 Purple Shaft cam, which is excellent for heavy car/trucks with a mild stall, low compression and power accessories.

I was 18 in 1979 and cars were strangled with emissions and poor flowing catalysts (todays cats flow very well)... and I was also a huge Mopar fan so I was very excited when the LRT came out!

I had a 71 Chevy shortbed in 1980 that ran 12.60 quarter mile. But I had disconnected the secondaries on my 750 double pumper to save gas when daily driving. I was challenged by one of these while driving to work one day, thinking no problem, but I lost! I never disconnected the secondaries again!
