This was the very first sporting event that I had ever watched in my life when I was 7 years old. I got introduced to sports by this game.

Though Oklahoma's style has changed offensively, you could make a strong argument that this lineup of Sims, Wilson, Overstreet, & Watts is their most talented backfield ever.
@craigkleber9316
@craigkleber9316 Жыл бұрын
I would say it was Mildren, Pruitt, Wylie/Bell and Crosswhite. More variety and Mildren a better passer and field general, and Pruitt more of a fluid and stylish runner than Sims. Of course this is all opinion, just sharing mine.

What about Sims, King, and Lott the year before? Great backfield as well.

Both are right. Auburn had james, jackson,agee. Irish had a slew of backs from 88 to 92. Rocket was in 89. Culver, johnson,brooks brothers. They were not as talented but were able to have the bus play fullback.

Thank you for posting. I was 13 - and this game was the first time I was made aware of this team I'd never heard of (they never got ABC coverage)... Florida St. Over the decades they became a name everybody knew.

Florida State is a big school, has been for decades before this game. Trust me when I say everybody in 1980 who followed college ball knew about the existence of Florida State University.

I remember this game clear as day I was a 13 year old kid ....JC Watts ran the option cut up field as he was falling down inches from the ground he pitched the ball back to the great Billy Sims and he ran it in high-stepping 22 yard for a touchdown . that blew my mind I had never seen anything like that since then or now

Check out Colorado 1989 vs Nebraska. The Buffaloes worked the down field pitch to perfection as well in that game. Awesome play. A shame they suck so bad now.

That was a sweet pitch. Sims just held back waiting. Also to shortside of field was impressive. Great stuff.

Man, I love the wishbone! Even with all the fumbles, it was the most exciting era of Sooner football!! I wish (no pun intended) that we still ran it occasional just to make things interesting. Although we have had some great QB’s recently, Kyler Murray is the only one who would have been a successful wishbone QB. And I love how animated the officials used to be. Very demonstrative in their gestures.

Sooner! I was 4 when this game was played but I don’t remember the exact game but as long as I can remember I watched OU football. I remember my family screaming and hollering at the tv when Miami beat us I remember it because my grandpa kept calling Vinny Testeverde a Sumbitch! 😂

Pretty sure this is the same head official that does the 93/94 orange bowl. He personally threw the flag on the phantom clip on Cory Dixon‘s pot return for a touchdown. I knew Cory a little bit in College.. he was a super nice guy, his dream is to return a punt for a touchdown in a big game. He did it. And they steal it away from him on what has been basically proven to be a blown call.

I do. I so appreciate this upload. I didn't start watching college football until the 1982 season. I noticed David Overstreet was on OU from this game. I was devastated when I heard the sad news upon hearing when he died in a car accident when he played for the Miami Dolphins. It will be difficult and sad for me to watch this game. I have never forgotten him. My condolences and deep respect for the Overstreet family.

Great win for Oklahoma , dominating defense and stout running game . But I wonder why barry Switzer never focused a little bit on the passing game to give balance to the offense . Watts was terrible throwing it , so was Bradley and others who followed . Aikman was the greatest passing talent but Switzer never really focused a bit on the passing . Which I think cost OU against quality defenses that slowed down the wishbone . Teams like Miami and even in 1980 the Stanford game with elway .
@craigkleber9316
@craigkleber9316 Жыл бұрын
Switzer could never be accused of having imagination. Agree with all you say. Another example of his teams collapsing when they needed to adapt was the USC game when they went in #1 and #2. Once the Trojans figured out Phelps & Co. running they got beaten. By this time their wishbone was more option football - the wishbone decpetion of the QB making decisions at the line of the Mildren era was not this system

Despite FSU being undefeated, they would have been a long shot to get a share of the title had they won. At beat, they could have split MAYBE

They didn’t get the respect then being an independent. Same w Pitt who had only 1 loss..at FSU in a rainstorm..but was denied a major bowl despite being ranked #3 headed into bowl season. They ended up demolishing South Carolina in the gator bowl 38-9 and finished #2 in the country.
