Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. A small selection of photographs from the days before affordable video cameras and long before the invention of the digital camera. Taken in the region of 1985-1989, using film cameras and the photos scanned into my computer.

I was 15 in 1985 & we used to travel from Kilwinning to Irvine by train or bus to go to the magnum, go clothes shopping & go to that sit in chip shop that did deep fried pizza, beside the bus stops. I’ve only been back to Scotland a handful of times since 87 & the new towns & estates haven’t aged well! I went to the pleasuredome, Amanda’s, the loft & Ruby Tuesday’s, so it’s not all bad 😂. Cheers for posting the pictures. I don’t know why they came up on my things to watch, but I’m glad they did. GQ

I'm glad you like them :-) My brother actually took these photos many years ago and never realised the value of them when he took them he's really pleased with the nice comments he's had both here, and on the "Old Irvine" page on facebook.

I lived in Irvine from 88-91 and really loved the town and people. Had one of the wee triangular flats on Montgomery St. overlooking the railway station. Kings Arms sold the best pint in town... I hear it's closed down now 😢

East Road, it was a Presto (1987) before it was Safeway (1989). It was never a Morrisons, although owned by them from January 2004. It closed down early 2005. Was busy busy until Asda opened. A slow decline for years.

Can't remember it ever being a Presto. The land was cleared to build Safeway which is now Aldi. Presto was in the town next to the Delta Pub. Am sure Presto became What Every Woman Wants then Mackay's now M&Co. Somebody help me out if I'm wrong 😉

80s kid and remembered irvine late 80s into 90s as a tidy respectable town to grow up in but went down hill 2000s. Recently went back into town and to castlepark after being away for a good few yrs and it looked like a proper dump and everything untidy, overgrown and stuff damaged. Sad to see the place go down hill like that and the folk ain't much better but to be fair most places have went this way throughout Scotland. Sad to see but good to see the old pictures of what it was like when I was a kid.

the town looks so clean and tidy in the 80's my childhood was the late 90's and early 00's come the early 00's everywhere started shutting down it's nice to see the old big post office open again was a waste just sitting there.

Is Irvine near Ayr? My dad’s great grandmother Agnes Irvine was from Ayr. I guess Irvine must be a common name around there?

It's about half an hour to Ayr on the train. You get the train that runs from Ayr to Glasgow and Irvine's in the middle.

All modernised now. The wee red bricks that were the path that lead to rivergate are now big grey tiles. The parish church is being turned into a pub too.
