1981 Preakness Stakes - Pleasant Colony : ABC Broadcast

With a final burst of speed in the last few strides, Pleasant Colony added the 106th Preakness today to his Kentucky Derby victory and needs only the Belmont Stakes to become the l2th winner of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown. Pleasant Colony surged to a one-length victory over Bold Ego, who had led from the start, as 74-1 Paristo, a supplemenatry nominee, finished third, two more lengths back. Pleasant Colony rewarded his backers in the record Pimlico crowd of 84,113 with $5 for each $2 bet. So thorough was his victory in this mile-and-three-sixteenths race that it seems unlikely that any of his 12 rivals could play spoiler in the Belmont, which is June 6.

I had Thirty Eight Paces in a stake that winter on the inner dirt; won by nine, paid 7-2, I had $10 to win and a $10 cold $36.00 double with the winner of the ninth (who also won by nine). Enjoyed the Jets final game a lot the next day.

I grew up very close to Aqueduct race track. My father was drinking buddies with Johnny Campo. They drank at a bar called the Post Time. lol

@@CAPTMAHI Great! I supposed you met Johnny Campo too! He was born in East Harlem, New York on February 24, 1938. John P. Campo became famous as Pleasant Colony´s trainer. He also conditioned both 1973 Champion 2-Year-Old filly Talking Picture and 1973 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Protagonist, having won 1,431 from 12,836 starters between 1966 and 1986. Johnny Campo died on November 14, 2005. God bless him!

@@Caroni100 I grew up in Ozone Park,Queens where John lived his whole life I think.He had another great horse named Jim French. My fav was a horse he had named Lonesome Cowboy. I made a fortune with that horse. And for the record Pleasant Colony was a gangly horse with terrible composition. John complained the horse ate for two. Much later he had a fire at his stables and he lost 40 horses.

Longshot Thirty Eight Paces would romp later that year in the Roamer on the inner dirt (I had him at 7-2 that day), and go on to sire future Triple Crown contender Thirty Six Red

If he could find a blacksmith willing enough to pare a horse’s frog, Campo believed he could alleviate pain and promote soundness. The procedure was widely criticized then as now, “inhumane”
