Living the dream watching the 1985 RAC ... day 2 we saw Wales in the morning ... and rested up in Scarborough ready for Tuesdays Yorkshire forests

It's wonderful to re-live this period, but it's so sad knowing what was to come. As well as poor Henri Toivonen we lost far too many other drivers, co-drivers, and fanatical supporters in this exciting era. William Woollard is a fine man and a proper TV professional; I really missed his style and serious approach to motoring when the Top Gear bosses moved him aside and let Jeremy Clarkson's moronic, egotistical 'lads and doughnuts' content take over. Listening to Woollard's desperately earnest safety concerns during this event - obtained directly from the drivers and teams because he's an old-school JOURNALIST and not a damn 'celebrity' - almost made me want to cry.

I love the modern day WRC. Those modern WRC cars are incredible, but nothing beats seeing and hearing a roaring Quattro S1 E2 sliding about in the mud. The king of rally cars, and the best sounding. This year i was gutted to see the WRC Ford Fiesta getting replaced with the new Ford Puma. It looks to be a longer wheelbased car. I've loved the short wheelbase hot hatch WRC years. The handling on those little cars was insane. The 1980's, - back in the days when i would have actually paid for a BBC license (had i been old enough). Was only fourteen in 85. VHS Rallies? Are these rallies that you taped on to VHS back at the time they were aired on tv ?

Hi there. There was (is) a single tape that kick-started the whole process. I must get round to writing a blog post about it some day for vhsrallies.com - but there were only a handful of reports on there. Three, maybe four at most. The rest of this channels uploads came from people who either donated or loaned me tapes for conversion (I don't charge for this, unlike the kind of shops who offer the service). In effect, these generous and devoted rally fans kept the footage alive and they wanted it shared, where possible. That's how the channel grew. Hope this helps, and glad to hear you've been enjoying the coverage.

The Lombard RAC really was a fantastic event, a proper test of man + Louise Aitkin Walker and machine. The modern day event is a poor relation. Incidentally William Woolard is a proper presenter.

Just fantastic! I don’t know what I’d do if it weren’t for these classic rally videos? I suppose I’d be forced to watch the rather boring state of modern motor sport.....seems like every genre has progressively been homogenized into BORING. All the cars look the same, all the drivers look the same, all the actual driving looks the same....I miss the Motorsport of the 70’s-80’s-90’s
