One of my favorite moments as a Jet's fan: Wesley Walker scoring four touchdowns against the Dolphins.

This wasn’t like today’s high scoring games. In 1986, there were not the same offensive friendly rules as we see nowadays. Heck the previous week’s NFL GOW was an Eagles/Bears defensive slugfest In 1986, you had the best of both worlds

Agreed man,I remember that 80's NFC DOMINANCE and the team that won the SB always,Always had a #1 or #2 D unit,like DEFENSE not only mattered,it really won championships,I had BELIEVE it or not a T-shirt in 92 that said OFFENSE SELLS TICKETS on the front,BUT DEFENSE WINS SB's on the back as it was really the only season in which DOLPHINS in MARINO/SHULA era truly had a top 10 D,not counting Marinos 10 gms in rookie 83 season cuz that D was good also but really that 92 D was the only one,because 90s D was good but had a meltdown toward end of season and 92's did slip toward end but not horribly and rebounded with a SHUTOUT in the playoffs!Yea DEFENSE was huge I would say till maybe late 90's when Denver won those bowls and they were a good D but not like the GIANTS,BEARS,NINERS,COWBOYS,Etc..

The Jets and Dolphins had a 4 or 5 year run where every game turned into a free-scoring shootout. I think there was a game in there where Marino threw for over 500 yards and still lost.

Yup. That was the 1988 game in Miami

In 1988 Marino had a game vs the Jets where he threw for 350 and 5 td's (0 int) and lost. Jets had something like 600 yards of offense that day

In terms of total passing yardage, this game topped that Colts-Jets matchup in Week 2 of 1972 featuring Joe Namath and John Unitas.

Marino has a career day, but has to see the defense lose the game. Like Talking Heads once said, same as it ever was, same as it it ever was.

Marino’s defense kept giving him back the ball. He had opportunity to seal it with one more first down and he didn’t convert it. That’s his career in miniature - volume galore but not actually making the plays needed to win.

wesley walker was wide open repeatedly. you would think theyd double team him at some point. marino would constantly embarrass jet defenses most of his career.

Typical 80s dolphins, great passing, no running game or defensive. Highly entertaining but left dolpfans unsatisfied with no superbowl championships.

This reminded WHY Marino never got the Fins back to the SB,Idk htf Shula let this D slide this bad smack dab in the middle of Dan Marinos prime yrs,86-89 and hell u can even say 85 is when the D started its dumpster run and fans get mad when I say it but DON SHULA did not help Marino get back to the big game and all honesty the worst thing that could have happened was that 90 season when eveybody thought Shila had restored Miamis D but it would only last for roughly 75% of the season before starting to crack and sure enough was nowhere to be found in the AFC Div game vs Bills,just a TINY bit of D would have made the difference in that gm and sure enough this same D shiwed up in 91 season and really the 92 season ended up being their best D in that era but by that point the Offense still had no running game and although this time the D did stay a bit straighter and for the most part it was the offense and one of Marinos more dismal performances all the way at the 92 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP game at HOME even but not one DOLPHIN showed up,including Marino altho I will say CLAYTON dropped a couple HUGE point difference making catches that certainly wouldnt have hurt them,but really it was just a terrible game start to finish for them,at home and winner goes to the SB,I have to admit to this day that game shocked me the most,because they were coming off of a div title,D finished at #7 I believe and also coming off of a demolition of the Chargers in Miami 31-0 shutout so wtf would have thought they wouldnt even show up at HOME?!But anyway yea DC OLIVIDOTTI should have been fired way befire Shula retired,he had the pcs fir a top ten unit but his in game adjustments were NOWHERE to be foynd and always collapsted 2nd half and THIS is the main reason I put it on SHULA as great as he was in the 70's and early 80's he had a VERY LONG time to get that D and DC in check but he didnt get the 2nd part,the DC capable of putting all the talent he had by the early 90's So yea SHULA is a legend but imo the same way Dallas had to do it,Fins should have replaced Shula,but that damn 90 season screwed Us and Dan,lol!!
@MichaelR.-dk9itАй бұрын
Been watching the Dolphins since 1984 and this ranks as one of the worst defensive games we ever played it must of killed Shula to watch because he played in the secondary when he played in the NFL and he took pride in the defense he played
