Red Skelton was such a genuinely kind man with a pure soul. When he won an Emmy award in the early 1950s over Lucy, he stepped up to the podium to accept the award and humbly stated, "Ladies and Gentlemen, you gave this award to the wrong redhead." Such class and humility. Lucy never forgot it. "Good night and may God bless".

Yep...Red Skelton did not care for an off color joke and never told one. I miss those beautiful people who loved life and seemed to hate no one. They respected the office of the president and never berated our country or disrespected our national heritages. It's like Dolly Parton said once, "If you wanna make it in this business you need to keep your damned mouth shut about politics". She was sure right about that. I say "Carol Burnett" and even the kids know who I'm talking about. I say "Kathy Griffin" and they go "who?", or they say, "ain't that the psycho that cut Trump's head off?" But they can't think of one funny thing she ever did or said. In fact when she quit show business I think her and a couple of her remaining friends were the only ones who knew she quit....lol

I met Red Skelton in the 1970's. He was exactly the humble, soft speaking and reverent person you see here saying, "Good night and God bless". He did exactly what he said, he said something small and special to me that has stayed with me for 50 years and counting. Thank you, Red. Thank you, Lucy.

Red Skelton (along with Buster Keaton) helped to train Lucy in her comedic talents in the 1940s when she was dropped by MGM because they didn't know what to do with her. They taught her physical comedy and the importance of timing....her and Red Skelton were lifetime friends. I miss them both!

My grandmother came to America when she was 18 years old in 1922 to marry my grandfather, and was widowed after 24 years of marriage. Her hair turned gray within that year. She never remarried, even though she was asked by 2 men. She loved to watch Red Skelton. He made her laugh, which was such a treat for me to see her enjoying herself. She learned to speak enough English to communicate, whether she understood everything he said, I don't know. Looking back, I am grateful that his comedy reached beyond words to make her laugh. She also loved Danny Kaye. We would watch these shows together, and I miss all of it. Comedy will never be like this again. They were class acts.

+ John Dalton - No, YOU are wrong. John Ritter was, obviously, NOT going to read the whole biography, for goodness sake. It was a prop. Ritter did, however, have more to read on the script pages contained within the huge book, but the show was running long, and Lucy was aware of this, so she "cut him short", even at the expense of accolades towards her. No one was more aware of the "behind the scenes" actions besides Lucy, who not only was the greatest comedian of all-time "on camera", but also a studio owner who knew the ins and outs of the "behind the camera" action and time frame that they had to do their scenes.

If anything, the studio, in the eyes of broadway critics, didn't learn from the financial and critical wrecking Hello Dolly got for having Barbra Streisand over Carol Channing from when Mame was being developed for film. Though many could say Mame was the Godzilla '98 worse of 1974: critics tore it apart but it was financially successful.

One, out of the many things that he has done, is when he portrayed a principal, and telling the children what the Pledge of Allegiance stood for, each word had/has a meaning. I watch that every now, and then. I wonder if it would have any effect on the children nowadays.

At about the one minute mark, you see Angela Lansbury graciously applauding Ball (quite noble of Angela, considering that Ball knocked her out of contention for Warner Brothers's ill-fated 1974 movie version of Lansbury's 1966 stage hit, "Mame".) Standing to Angela's right is her late husband, Peter Shaw. While Angela wears a saintly expression, note that husband Peter is frowning and not applauding Ball. Angela was always gracious at public events. I read, somewhere, that the Lansbury and Ball had been at odds in the early 1960's. Supposedly, Frank Sinatra wanted Lucille Ball to play Laurence Harvey's mother in the original version of "The Manchurian Candidate", but Lansbury snagged that plum role. One wonders if Ball's usurping of "Mame", a decade later, was a kind of professional "payback". At any rate, having seen Miss Lansbury on stage three times, I can tell you that she has more talent in her little finger than Lucille Ball had in her entire body. Ball was a brave showgirl who learned comedic timing and the craft of clowning, while Lansbury is a real actress, able to play comedy, tragedy, and everything in-between.
