Imagine just being there. As soon a McGill dropped in on his second run I knew it was coming. glad the crowd apprenticed it. Wish I could take a time machine back and tell myself to keep all my skateboards. my cab, 2 mcgills, and danforth.

The one and only pro contest I got to. I'll never forget trying to skate the halfpipe, no flat bottom, on my Sims Hosoi, when I look up and see Christian waiting for me to get out of his way. He climbed up the chainlink fence and jumped into the pipe and proceeded to shred. RAD!

RESULTS: Mark Rogowski 1st, Hawk 2nd, Magnusson, 3rd, Neil Blender 4th. Amazing that McGill didn't place higher. Hawk would have won, being the only one with a slew of board twirler tricks, but he couldn't stay on some critical runs. The same must have happened to McGill. Good to find another contest that Blender placed high in. The results are from Thrasher magazine. Hosoi had to drop out due to an injury. This is an epic skateboard contest. think of it. 1984. Orwell couln't have imagined it. hehe.

@Randyh9 I saw Tony Hawk trying McTwists at Del Mar over 25 yrs ago. On one attempt, he slammed so hard he just disintegrated on the flat bottom. He could only get them about 2-3 feet out and he spun them flat with his board almost parallel with the ground, weird. He would always bottom out on them. I think either Lester or Phillips were the first to land them after McGill, Christian's?....wow!
@customxke13 жыл бұрын
@mwhitten77 Tony's trick was a "Unit"...basically a Miller Flip revert, invented by Billy Ruff. If you watch closely, you'll see his front hand on the coping for a split second/ ie 540 frontside invert. Sometimes Hawk's hand would miss the coping and he'd make it, but he never really got above the coping. McGill did the first 540s out over the lip.

@lemonite1 You could accuse him of being dull, but contempt? He didn't bother anybody. He did well to establish himself out of Florida. I remember the Upland contest in 85 and the interviews. What every skater had to say spoke volumes. I was impressed with what McGill had to say. Hosoi was high. Lester was insecure. Powell was cornball but they had merits. They team was taken care of. Look at poor old Duane Peters. Santa Cruz abandoned him. Gator? He needed professional help, not Jesus. Hosoi?

@streetslasher666 McGill was kinda goody goody and he was very competitive. He also had this All American boy image, he looked like he belonged on a football field, not a skatepark. Add all that up and put him in a very Punk Rock/Hardcore Skater era and you get contempt. BTW, this is the earliest video footage of the 540 that I know of.

Yeah well, at least he didn’t murder a girl and stuff her in a surfboard bag, get caught importing a shit ton meth, or took a gun and blew his head off, like some of the non “goody goody” skaters McGill was up against here? The dude is a legend, quit painting him as lame.

Allen Losi's dad and uncle owned Variflex and he talks about how him and his dad wanted to make top quality stuff (like they did in the early days of the company) and his uncle and cousin wanted to make cheap shit....apparently his uncle won out because variflex was garbage when I started skating.
@buckodonnghaile43096 жыл бұрын
@a w they sold decks, completes, all components and they were really cheap materials. They had a reverse kingpin truck that didn't turn well etc. It's too bad because when Losi's dad was still involved they had good quality and one of the best skate teams. Lance Mountain, Eddie Elgueara, Grosso, Lucero, Grisham and a few others all rode for them but the boards they were riding weren't the garbage being sold at KMART. juicemagazine.com/home/allen-losi/

How did Blender do?? Well, at least he gave hope that anyone could be a "professional" skater and have their names etched out on a board. Location and who you know made a world of difference back in those days, and he is proof of that no matter what anyone would say. He took a rare and coveted slot that hundreds of others would have earned and taken seriously, but heaven forbid anyone say anything about Blender. He sucked and did not progress like so many of the others in this video, many of which are still riding to this day. Suck a lemon, Blender
