It's true, but it may yet be overly-optimistic. I'm reminded of the apocryphal Einstein quote: “I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” Similar could be said of changes that will be essentially irreversible for humanity, as might be seen if some of the climate tipping-points are reached and feedback loops swing into operation. We've got about 8 years, at the outside, to solve that one, and we're currently accelerating in making it worse. There are levels of species "survival" far more ugly than many have contemplated. Progress is never guaranteed, and barbarism closer to the surface and harder to escape than we'd like to think. These are, in many ways, the best times humanity has ever seen, by a long shot, and we're risking all of it.

"This is a basic human rights issue" And that's why May is against it. She's been actively opposing the Human Rights Act since she was Home Sec. It was one of the main talking points before she was appointed as Prime Minister (because remember, she didn't get elected... either of the times). And after the appointment, one of her first statement was her intention to remove the Human Rights Act from British law as soon as we're out of EU. Her second was to start widdling it down by redefining the word "house" to no longer have the legal meaning "habitable for humans".

Seeing a journalist asking Theresa-bot to break its programming was pretty great.
@michaelccozens2 жыл бұрын
That's the weird thing; they all talked like it was a difficult question, but it really, really isn't. This should have been right up Theresa-bot's programmed alley. It's basically a standard "humanize yourself to our audience" profile-fluffing question, to which any professional pol should have pre-written, or be quickly-able to cobble-up, appropriate answers. It's the kind of soft question you would expect from a partisan, friendly interviewer. May had nothing, and could think of nothing. That's a remarkable lack of planning and ability to improvise, which is not... super, for a Great-Nuclear-Power leader? That would seem the more important point. I get that there's additional difficulties for her in being an older woman in British politics and the increased scrutiny the bigotry around that brings, but that would seem to be more reason to have an answer prepped, not less, and aggravates the underlying display of incompetence, which, again, not great around nukes.

I feel like Trump and Brexit share the same bleak path, and Holly's analogy is spot on. Like we Americans have been so caught up with the mess Trump has made so far, but we've failed to see the real pain to come. Not sure that's how Brexit is going to be, but I feel like that path could possibly be shared? I feel like she's so spot on its wondrous and heartwrenching at the same time. Well spotted Holly.

crisisofconsciousness Aye 'MAGA' is bullshit. I mean, can anyone truly name a time when it was great? America has been fucking with the world since about WW2, some adventures before that along with alot of racism slavery and genocide before that. Even when the US was doing well it spoilt the whole thing by murdering millions of people in aggressive wars. For empires to be great alot of other peoples and nations have to suffer. It's the "American Dream" afterall, for the most part they have no interest in other nations doing well. PS when I generalize about Americans like that I most mean the establishment and military, but alot of people support them too of course. Long story short, I'm not bashing ALL Americans... just a bunch of cunts out there.
