GM/Chevrolet ran two cars for 30 hours at around 180MPH to average 175 with stops for refueling and driver changes. They set records for 12hr, 24hr and 30hr endurance averages. Fun Fact: they continuously fired shotguns to keep the deer off the track the entire time.

Track near Fort Stockton, Texas. They ran two at the same time. As for the shotguns; Hitting a deer at 50MPH would be a big issue. 175? Well….. yeah. Let your imagination do it’s worst.

The ZR-1 really was the King of the Hill in 1990. Prior to that, the regular Z51 equipped C4s were already the quickest mass-produced sports cars around a race track, at any price. The ZR-1 raised that bar to an almost absurd level. I'm fairly confident a ZR-1 would absolutely embarrass a Ferrari F40 (built 1987-1992). Not necessarily on paper, but in the real world on a real track. And it was FAR more civilized.

24 hrs @ 175 mph for a production car out of the showroom. The world record still stands. They also set world records for 18 hrs and 30 hrs. in order to average 175 mph, they had to actually average faster than 175 mph.

The engine is beautiful and the stories behind this model are interesting to hear. @@johnj.baranski6553 Correct. Altho Lotus designed the powerplant, GM had no facilities to do the assembly and build so they farmed out that to the Mercury Marine Division. Because calling it a small block Mercury would be stupid. An LS1 is a SBC. It's an evolutionary thing.
@hoghogwild6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the GEN-3 LS1 SBC is an evolution of the GEN-1 and GEN-2 SBC, but the LT5 for the 90-95 ZR-1 was not part of the evolution whatsoever. Lotus was responsible for most of the design, development, and testing of the RPO LT5 all aluminum, naturally aspirated DOHC engine that for 1990-92 375hp@6000rpm/370lb/ft torque@370lb/ft torque@4800rpm and 1993-1995 405hp@5800rpm/385lb/ft torque@4800rpm. Mercruiser Marine produced the engine as GM lacked mass production experience for V8 engines. What Brandon means is that the LT5 for 90-95 was not part of the common Small Block Chevrolet lineage. The LT5 was designed by Lotus, built by Mercuiser Marine, for Chevrolet which is a subsidiary of General Motors. 55-95 GEN-1, 96-2002 GEN-1E("E" for enhanced" L30 305, L31 350 Vortec 305/350, 92-97=GEN-II-LT1, LT4 350's and L99 265/4.3-V8, 97-2004=GEN-III SBC LS1/6, LM7 etc 2005-2014 GEN-IV SBC LS2, LS3,LS4,LS7, LS9, LSA etc 2013-present GEN-V SBC LT1,LT4, L83, L86, LT5(new 2019 LT5 is presently available in the now available 2019 ZR1 Corvette it makes 755 hp@6400rpm/715lb/ft@3600 rpm with a new 2.6 liter TVS positive displacement supercharger with revised intercooler compared to the 650hp/650lb/ft torque LT4 of the ZO6) The new GEN VI SBC is due out when the new C8 mid-engine Corvette is released in the early 20's). It will most likely be a smaller displacement V8 with Direct Injection, DOHC and twin turbochargers. Very similar to the new Cadillac LTA 4.2 liter DOHC, Direct Injected, twin-turbo V8 engine for the 2019 Cadillac CT6(550hp@5700 rpm/627lb/ft torque at 3,200-4,000 rpm.

@Muffin1922133 жыл бұрын
both sides have that same 'quirck' and if the tires were switched side to side the tread would be reversed the tires were 'directional' they weren't supposed to be rotated like a normal car, now if the tires were broken off the rims for replacement I guess just the rims could have been reversed, nice catch though.
