@@t4rci427 any model made AFTER the end of the AMF era are very reliable. Models with 100,000 plus milea are a dime a dozen. Harleys got their bad rep during the AMF days, and for good reason, but realistically they are extremely reliable bikes and "well my uncle had one that...." doesn't change that.

One of the most telling experiences I've had in my life on the whole Harley aesthetic was when I was younger and my family lived with my Grandma, we had a couple of neighbors who had Harley's and would ride past every once in awhile. They always had the loudest exhaust that would vibrate the antiques off the shelf and shake the house and my grandma would just watch out the window with a smile on her face as they drove by at a brisk pace. Later on down the road we had gotten new neighbors and they had a later teens to early twenties aged daughter who had a boyfriend who had a 600 sport bike (I can't remember the type probably an r6 or something) but he had a loud exhaust and the first day he drove by a similar pace to the Harley my grandmother called the front office of the neighborhood we were living at to complain that there was a motorcycle tearing up the streets in the neighborhood and was going to hit and kill a little kid. I never mentioned the irony of the situation that I had seen to her but it was always something that stuck in my mind about Harley riders vs Sport Bike riders.

I have a streetglide and an Aprilia, they’re both great bikes but I have more fun on the Harley and you can do more with it and travel further with it comfortably. Maybe I’m getting old, but I love it.

What you said about the engine making a lot of noise and not a whole lot of power reminds me of the 4.6L modular V8 when it first debuted in the 96 Mustang GT. It made something like 215hp but with a muffler delete it made some pretty amazing sounds, and you can rev the crap out of it without ended up at felony speeds. There's definitely something fun about an engine that is just loud without being super fast.

@chrisdroste32967 жыл бұрын
I think the closing quote really sums it up right. I honestly swear to god I'm not a harley guy...but now i have 2 of their bikes. but I love FZ07s, R1150s, CB110s, Guzzi V7s and Triumph Rockets and bonnies...but the cult of harley actually does a lot right. you can get anything under the sun branded with the bar and shield, you have a dealer support group all across the U.S.; they build everything tight and heavy and thick paint and thick chrome and a good ride with endless customization. you think that giant V-twin doesn't have enough power? They have factory-supported and warranted hop-up kits; hell, many dealers have a DYNO in their service shops. H-D has it's own financing arm, has branded insurance that's cheaper that pretty much anyone else's offerings, too. Are they overpriced? That's debatable, though some of their not-bike products suffer sticker shock from having their name on it for sure. Sitting on them in traffic feels like you're trying to gloryhole a volcano. Handling on some of the models is downright abyssmal, and the power:weight ratio is garbage. but the engines aren't arcane and outdated like many says, Not all of them are bad handling, the Dyna chassis is amazing, and it's not like they didn't try to move into more liquid cooling and beyond; the V-Rod did just that, and they're ending production this year after 17 years because they just didn't sell. The bikes are comfortable and easy to ride, sound fantastic, and will last forever provided you maintain them. These bikes are the kind that gets willed to next of kin. I love riding mine but it doesn't mean I dislike yours. if i can do it safely I'll give you the nod and the hand sign as I pass by and roll out to the middle of nowhere for a burger and the experience. It's all in the aesthetics and I'll take that any day over a generic appliance of a vehicle that doesn't move my soul.

I remember watching a video with James May reviewing a Yaris (maybe a '99?), he said that the 60-so horsepower it produced was class leading, granted it was a 1.0L instead of a 1.3L. My point being the power doesn't seem bad for 1990. The problem is that they still make similar power more than two decades later.
@stuffandjunkandthings3647 жыл бұрын
Gonna have to be "that guy" on this one. Harley davidson air cooled v-twin engines do not use cylinders offset to one side or another, they are directly in-line with one another, This is done because of the (horribly outdated) bottom end used (to this day) in those engines. They use what is known colloquially as a 'fork and knife' connecting rod setup (ie; one connecting rod rides on the outer portions of the crank pin, while the other rides on the center, between the "ears" of the other one). This is done to accommodate the usage of a one-piece roller bearing on the "big end" of the connecting rods. The crankshaft is of a three piece design, with the crank pin being pressed or bolted (sometimes both) between two round flywheels that have the ends made on to them. The reason for the "weird" pushrod angles are that the rocker arms are all the same distance fore and aft (as measured on the engine with "front" being the timing cover), but the cam lobes aren't- so the pushrod angles compensate for that. Yes The twin cam was an aesthetic improvement on the evo, in respects to pushrod angles, but it was in no way an improvement over the basic design of the evo. The twin cam adds more complexity to accomplish the same task- look tp the new Milwaukee 8 engine for the motor company;s admission of this fact. Anyhoo, keep the good work up, and rubber side down.

@markputnam49025 жыл бұрын
I love your videos let me just say that first but on these V twin bikes the rear cylinder definitely does get hotter than the front some manufacturers even go as far as to oil cool the rear cylinder but not the front . For instance my Suzuki intruder 1400 has an oil cooled rear cylinder and an air cold front cylinder. Offset or not the rear cylinder gets hotter.

The Roman dailys a mustang, as do I currently, and 2 other people I know. Maybe it's the subculture of V6s that forces us to be less asshole-ish than the GT owners, maybe it's the muted nature of the Essex, Cologne, and Duratec, maybe it's Ford's insistence on not giving the low end ones LSDs until the 2nd decade of the 21st century, I don't know, but what I can tell you is that at least V6 owners are generally not jackasses.

I have owned several sporty Kawasakis, Yamahas and Suzukis, a small adventure BMW, a supermoto(ish) Aprilia, and a Harley Electra Glide. It doesn't fit in with any of the others. Even currently I have a ZX-6R, a ZRX 1200 S, and a BMW F650, along with the "Glide". And there's a couple things I really agreed with on this review. First, the part about how easy it is to ride. It really is surprisingly easy. Once you're even barely moving, you can balance the thing so easily. All that weight just goes away. Plus the controls are extremely easy to use. You can twist the throttle as much as you want and it won't take off and kill you. You can ham-fist the brake lever, squeeze it like it's a hand strength exercise, or you can just lift your entire foot and stomp on the brake pedal. It's all good. You don't need to practise any two-finger finessing like on good sportbike brakes. Secondly, it was what you said about "I didn't want to stop. Let's go to Philly. Let's go SOMEWHERE." It has that weird quality where in basically every measurable way it's worse than all of my other bikes. Slower, heavier, more complicated, worse handling, worse brakes, more vibes, worse build quality, worse stock lights, and on and on. But then there's that weird quality where you just "pop off to get an ice cream", but somehow you notice you're in the next county over, on a road you've never seen before, the sun has already set and it's dark as heck, and you don't really know what happened except you just wanted to keep riding to see what's down that road, and the next...

ohh absolutely agreed. the BMW touring platform is nothing to shake a stick at either. I didnt mention since I have only rode one for 100 miles, unlike a holding I have 1k plus. if not for the cult following and image Harley would be done for. Harley stinks with maintenance, ride and vibration sub par, expensive to repair, can't carve the canyons well.... don't see the appeal.

I owned a Harley and a Ninja 250 at the same time. It felt like the whole world hated both bikes...but I was having too much fun to care. The best way I deal with other Harley owners is not to listen to them or ride with them. I like riding mine alone.

Avid motorcyclist here. HDs are total shit. First, the company is not "American" at all. The patriotism surrounding the brand is hilarious as they literally outsource the entire company, excluding very upper management. I personally have burned countless man hours dealing with their incompetent IT staff based out of a certain Asian subcontinent. Second, the motors are trash. It's 2017 and they're still fighting water cooling because of nostalgia or some crap like that. Still barely meets the extreme generous emissions regs. They would still have carburetors if they could get away with it. Thirdly, their bikes are simply not appealing at all (very subjective and my opinion). Maybe the Sportster looks cool but every else, ehhhhhhh. On top of that, you can find very comparable bikes from other makers with better, more reliable motors, for literally half the price that HD demands (looking at you, Goldwing). Finally, they ruin everything they touch. RIP Buell. I don't blame the company as much as I blame the inbred consumers. The culture is borderline toxic and I swear it keeps potential motorcyclists from showing more interest because they don't know there are other subcultures.

I don't know where you live, but here in Canada, Goldwings are the same price as the HD equivalent (that would be a road glide ultra). Patriotism? Maybe in the USA but anywhere else we just like them, period. And nowadays, the only brand that can compete with HD with fit and finish and paint quality is Indian, don't bore me with Honda or Yamaha, they feel cheap next to a HD or Indian. You're not forced to like them, to each his own, but if you can't at least understand the appeal of a HD, you're not a bike enthusiast. PS: I love all bike, I just happen to have a sweetspot for Harley.

Wow, nailed it on the head there. The Sportster is the ONLY one that looks decent. The others all are just big heavy boats that make garbage power and need to compensate by having an obnoxiously loud exhaust. I get that bikes need to be louder (I own one so I understand) but to that level is just ridiculous. The Harley fans are annoying as hell and I shake my head every time I hear a new rider say "Oh I really want to get a Dyna Glide"..

At 64 horsepower at 5000rpm this thing should make about 67.2 ft lbs of torque. At 67 hp then it'd be 70.3 ft lbs. Note this does not account for torque at other places on the rev range. I used this formula btw: Torque = (HPx5252)÷RPM

Mr. Regular is a bike guy too and he gets it, to a point. I own several H-D and also Yamaha and I don't fly flags or have "Harleyclothes" or dad Cos;lay outfits. I voted Independent and am almost Libertarian. I just got back from a 650 mile day riding from Sturgis bike rally yesterday and the bikes do eat up the miles. Yes H-D has done dumb things like kill Buell and the RUB thing that started in the 90's doesn't give the brand a good light in the biking community. But what would the motorcycle riding landscape look like now if H-D had died in say the late 60's? Competition always makes for a better product and I'm glad H-D is still around. BTW I talked to a Buell Ulysses owner two days ago who was coming back from Prudhoe Bay Alaska on a almost stock bike. That's riding from western Pennsylvania to northernmost Alaska and back on a "Harley". Not too shabby.

I've never wore Nike because I don't follow the crowd. It's the same with Harleys. I'm not going to ride something because everyone else is and it's "cool". Well, that was the case up until two years ago. I used to ride a triumph bonny. Great bike but I was strapped for cash. So I sold it. When things turned around, I went to buy another bike. I saw an 05 Harley Electra Glide Police bike selling for a ridiculously low price. Long story long, I rode it, I fell in love with it. I bought it. From the time I threw my leg over the bike, to the time I pulled back into the seller's driveway, I came to a convenient conclusion. Harleys are as ubiquitous as cars. Everyone has one. Am I going to stop driving my car because everyone has one? Of course not. That the day I became a Harley man.

@nicholasmapes5 жыл бұрын
Actually a harley motor can as well, but you will sacrifice longevity. Now, you'll never get straight 4 performance out of this engine, but 130 hp is achievable. The problem is that if you modify the harley engine that much it will only last 20k miles...
@Smilomaniac7 жыл бұрын
During my trip to the US I drove a Fatboy and came to pretty much the same conclusions. Comfort is A++ and the whole thing rattles and feels like it's built in China, but no matter where you go or stop people respect you, they almost thank you, for keeping up the American dream and supporting Freedom(TM). Don't get the bike for what it is (overpriced chrome) but you would be forgiven for considering getting one, if it was for the way people would treat you out in the open.
