I love how the crew can fly in formation perfectly, perform all this air combat maneuvering, and control the plane while maintaining situational awareness in some very tight situations. But damn, if some of them can't figure out a traffic pattern or which runway is which.

The missiles that the F-16 dodged in the video were a mix of at least 4 SA-2s and at least 1 possibly 2 SA-6s. Craziest of all was after he got back to base he realized he still had a full load of Chaff and Flares. For whatever reason his countermeasures had not dispensed and he dodged those 6 missiles purely by maneuvering

During WW2 it really was like that: Approach twice and enemy AA-gunners will have you by about 100% certainty. However, are you sure it is so critical anymore now that the planes are so fast? I think firing both AGM-12 Bullpups (before the era of laser guided bombs) required more approaches than one.

Why do DCS F-16s use AMRAAM at all in gulf war 1? I thought F-16s at that time only had 9L only? That's why they had F-14 and 15s as CAP, because they had the Sparrows and Phoenix.
@tacticaltoolbox70463 жыл бұрын
And at 42:24 comes the "illegal" firing of two "Sparrows" from an F-16. LOL. I think it's likely an issue of force of habit and practice taking over in the thick of the fight.
@tacticaltoolbox70463 жыл бұрын
@Signore ahhh, A models or C models or both? It's weird in that the AMRAAM was developed because F-16 radar didn't have the STT for Sparrow, or rather the F-16 just waiting for AMRAAM instead up upgrading radar for a soon to be obsolete missile. Anyways, fun mission to watch.
@howardoneil19173 жыл бұрын
@Signore i worked the 16's as a loader at that time. No sparrows, however the weasels out of spangalem ab,ge, had agm 88's that sometimes are mistaken for aim-7's. NO AMMRAMS at all during this time, But pg 2 16's and 15's had 120-b's- respectfully

Wasn't there the potential danger of releasing radiation when this event occurred ? Anyone know ?
@grimreapers3 жыл бұрын

@CMDRSweeper3 жыл бұрын
No more than what the stack of a coal powerplant spews out. Until a reactor has fired up and been "burning" the fuel, it is basically just Uranium that is isn't very radioactive, and none of the more nasty byproducts of fission. Unless of course a GR member were to land, run over to the fuel storage, take a rod out, take it out of its casing and start eating it... The odds of the radiation doing much is close to nil.
@jefferynelson3 жыл бұрын
@@CMDRSweeper ok, I more or less follow the answer, if the power plant were functioning at the time of bombing then the radiation risk would be much, much higher correct ? thanks for your time
@CMDRSweeper3 жыл бұрын
@@jefferynelson Even then nothing too great, but you would have more of the nastier isotopes, but for a short while I wouldn't want to be standing near that plant though. The more radioactive an isotope is (Lower half life time) the more dangerous it is, this is because it gives off more radioactivity, so those with a half life of nano seconds are fricking terrifying. But afterwards, the danger is ingestations of isotopes, eating and breathing in the dust around the site. Standing on a piece of Strontium 90 will not do anything to you, but breathing in smoke from a fire burning with it... Well that will harm you substantially. Part of the reason for this is that the alfa and beta particles can be stopped by a piece of paper or a plank and have very short travel distances. Gamma however is more of the pure energy and will travel some distance from the source and is hard to stop, however to get a lot of gamma radiation you need a very radioactivie isotope, so we are back at the half life debate and why those really short half life ones are so terrifying, they basically dump half their mass into energy / particles each cycle of that half life.

Someone should develop a cruise missile SAM that has a scramjet booster for terminal attack. It could take off and fly like a plane, seek out targets and if it detected a dummy, encountered jamming or was otherwise threatened could call of its attack and return home, otherwise it could go pitbull, fire up the scramjet and zero in for the attack. It wouldn't need a full electronics suite, a pilot or even a weapon load capability (although...) so could be built relatively cheaply for a plane (albeit expensive as a missile), being reusable until expended it would save on missiles required per kill. Now try to saturate a SA-5 site...

The F-16C Block 50 in DCS and most probably the real world can't carry AIM-7s.
@GutkowskiMarek3 жыл бұрын
They explained in the briefing. Those were to represent Aim-7 Sparrows. And that makes no sense as the Sparrow missile was never implemented on F-16.(Yes it was tested but never put in to the field) F-16 radar didn't have the ability to guide the Semi-active radar homing missiles.

Yes they explained that they were using 120B in STT mode to mimic a Sparrow, but if F16 never carried sparrow, it would have be interesting to see this mission run with only Aim9. But IRL I am assuming the F15c were the ones attacking any AA threats. I can only assume that not everyone has an F15 so they supplemented them with F16 and this is why they tried to use 120B in STT to basically be more F15s for those who did not own an F15 module.
