When she was recommissioned in 86, MISSOURI already had 4x CIWS. I think the reason she didn’t fire was because the cruiser and RN screening vessels were far enough out that the missiles never got close enough to trigger the CIWS. One went dumb or just plain missed, and the other was taken out by HMS GLOUCESTER.
@lohrtom3 жыл бұрын
One CIWS did fire. The on on the USS Jarrett fired on a chaff canister launched by the Missouri. Then Missouri was hit by a few rounds
@jyralnadreth44423 жыл бұрын
One Missile was observed going for a swim. An Iraqi Serviceman stationed with the unit responsible many years later claimed 3 missiles had been fired...nothing was to be gained from such a claim so its possible 3 were fired
@jyralnadreth44423 жыл бұрын
@@lohrtom That was a separate incident my friend 😊 It happened shortly after the missile attack (following day or so) as flashes were spotted on the coast and were believed to be more missiles...they were infact unrelated explosions. The 2 incidents get blended into 1 . You are correct in what happened though...Missouri fired chaff expecting a missile and Jarretts CIWS engaged the Chaff.
@c0ldyloxproductions3243 жыл бұрын
There was a fact that her flairs may have Interfered with her phalanxes targeting sensors which was later proved when one of her escorts cwis fired at the Missouri when she fired her flairs after the second incoming missile was detected hitting the super structure

@@c0ldyloxproductions324 USS Jarretts CIWS engaged the Chaff shell while it was still whole as Phalanx determined it to be a threat and engaged as it was in full auto mode (my own theory is it was the chaff shell was fired in Jarretts and the possible missiles direction )

You got the summary wrong for the mission, the ship that shot down the Silkworm anti ship missile was actually HMS Gloucester; a type 42 destroyer (an anti air ship) with the longer range Sea Dart missile. Jingles was on a different ship which was the type 22 frigate you mentioned in the mission summary. The type 22 (a sub hunting ship) was equipped with Seawolf short range anti air missiles. I was a Royal Navy radar operator and a fellow radar operator on my mess deck was on Gloucester during the 1st gulf war.
@jyralnadreth44423 жыл бұрын
Indeed....Had it been a Type 22 Frigate there I am sure the outcome would be the same :) Seawolf whilst shorter ranged was superior to Sea Dart at engaging Anti ship missiles as it was specifically designed for that role (Designed to kill P270 Moskit). They Type 22 with their Type 967/968 Radar with its Pulse Doppler Filtering made it ideal for killing sea skimmers. In a way the Falklands War helped protect USS Missouri as all of the Type 42's missile and Radar issues were stepped on because of Coventry and Sheffield's loss like the Antique Type 965 Radar, Vacuum Tube electronics in the missile, inability to track or engage low level targets etc

@@jyralnadreth4442 Radar Type 965 had long been replaced by RT 1022 on Type 42s during the Gulf War (T42 B3, which is what Gloucester was, were never fitted with 965). RT 909 and Sea Dart had both been extensively modified in the in between years too making it much more effective against sea skimmers. During the Falklands, Sheffield was lost due to ineffective reporting and detection of the Exocet; Coventry was lost due to Coventry crossing Broadsword's path and breaking 910's lock on the incoming targets, preventing her from firing SeaWolf. RT 965, although older technology, was very capable of detecting sea skimmers. Operating near to hilly terrain made the detection and engagement of aircraft difficult with 965 and SeaDart, which is why the T42 operated in conjunction with T22. Had Coventry been in open sea, she would have been able to to engage the A4s or an Exocet with Sea Dart, even at low level.

Missouri, Iowa and New Jersey had a set of 4 times Block 0 Phalanx, Wisconsin was equipped with the more reliable and enhanced Block 1......Killing the Missile with Phalanx is questionable for a very specific reason. Phalanx has a optimum (Most effective) weapons range of 500 meters and the Seersucker had a 513kg Warhead....detonating that warhead so close would have risked severe damage to the Superstructure (Mo's belt armour would have shrugged it off but anything above would be wrecked) and killed many sailors with the massive warhead and the liquid fuel that the missile used which could shower the ship . Block 0 would have taken longer to kill the Missile as its rate of fire was 3000rpm compared to its successors 4500rpm. Fortunately HMS Gloucester was able to kill it at range with 2 times Seadart GWS30 missiles. Sailor on both ships witnessed a huge fireball when the missile was hit

On her 1984 refit, Missouri received: 4 x 20mm/76 cal Phalanx CIWS; so she would have defended herself. She also had some decoy and chaff countermeasures, but I have no idea how effective those would have been. Is ship armor modeled in DCS, or is it just a stack of hit points? If so, I highly doubt that Missouri would have gone down with that few hits... She was built with foot thick armor meant to take much heavier hits than that.

An Aircraft spotted 1 that splashed into the sea harmlessly and the other heading for Mighty Mo. The Serviceman didn't have anything to gain by lying about an event 10-20 years before so its possible 3 were fired and considering how crude Seersuckers are compared to even the first Harpoons its entirely plausible
