1997 Subaru Legacy 2.2 starter replacement overview/tips

This is not a full tutorial. This is just a basic overview on replacing the starter on this car. It looks a bit intimidating at first when you look at all the junk in the engine bay but with a little bit of wiggling and the right tools you can easily do this in your driveway.

My guess is that the eBay starter you bought functioned perfectly fine but was the (standard) short starter version and your Subaru called for the (optional) long starter version. I only know of the two different styles because of the notes on the AutoZone website when searching for a starter for a Subaru Legacy of this generation
