By using a regular hex bolt, you're defeating the security of the lock. Anyone can remove that bolt in 3 seconds and take your lock and tailgate. Use the one way bolt!

As he stated in the video, only reason you would need a lock is if you have a bed cover. So how would you reach the bolt in the tailgate is locked and the bed is covered? Doesn’t seem like an issue to me

@@Dillweed_productions. Some use a lock to prevent theft of their tailgate, not to protect contents in the bed.

@@gadgetsense3981 You could use some vise grips to remove that screw too. I used a Phillips screw with blue lock-tight on the threads.

@@siaripop7 you could do what I did. I just I stalled a bolt lock on the inside of the gate that latches into the side of the truck. Then put a padlock on it.

This is for new installers: There are two ribs on the back side of the door handle and the one on the right interferes with the locking mechanism of the Pop & Lock. You can see the interference is at the top of the swing arm and it just requires a slight radius on a grinding wheel to clear that rib. WARNING: Do not alter the rib on the handle, just the top corner of the Pop & Lock arm, it is a minimal alteration!

Thanks you for the video . I have a chevy 2006 Silverado truck non- key , broken tailgate handle , the plastic handle is a weak plastic handle that breaks too easy . I been busy trying to get a new metal handle but chevy people doesn't make metal handle for the tailgate .

I have something similar that I installed but since the handle is made of plastic I wonder if a good tug wouldn't break the part of the handle that the lock is under. I really can't understand why truck manufacturers don't build a more robust handle and lock system, especially with tailgates costing upwards of $4,000 on new trucks and thefts being very common.

Thanks, Probably using the ugly screw is better as it’s sort of tamper proof. Just had my tailgate stolen on my 06 GMC so this looks like a bit of a deterrent. I hope.

Gotcha & sorry to hear that man. Best of luck for the future! I know they make theft prevention bolts that you could consider using if you’d like? A lot of aftermarket light bar companies use them since light pods or bars can be easily stolen with just a hex bolt securing it.

I have try this pop n lock and like another one I forget the name but for me none of them work, I used a small chain . I drill two holes one in the door and the other one in the handle then put the small chain and put it a lock 🔒 the one with wire and a combination. It solve my problem

Hi Ian, I have 2004 Chevy pu, had a lock installed years ago because of a theft. Now years later I need to fix a clip located inside the latch, unfortunately I have one of those screws that will not let you remove the lock; only screw in not out. Any ideas as to how to remove that kind of screw? Called the shop where they installed, of course they want me to bring it in, more $$$$.

Hey thanks for the comment. And well to be honest im not to familiar with those types of screws that don’t come out after installation. If possible, maybe finding a way to cut the screw with some sort of tool? Other then that im not 100% certain, sorry!

Vice Grips or a good pair of channelocks can grab the screw by the outer edges and let you slowly loosen it.

I know what screw you’re talking about and i would try getting a dremel or small file and cutting a line in the middle for a flat head screw driver

Hey Robbie! Thanks for the question. So actually didn’t end buying a bed cover for the truck at all before i sold it. I would personally recommend checking out the company Bak.com. They have a lot of great & sleek cover options for trucks. Let me know if that helps!

Adrian Reyes not quite sure the size and bolt pitch thread, but if you buy that kit, I recommend going down to your nearest hardware store and they should have a thread checker. Once you know the bolt you need, buy a black one, they look much cleaner!

You don’t have to have a tailgate Handel lock because you have a bed cover. I have seen bed covers that have locks in them that lock the cover to the tailgate so even if you got the latch open the gate still wouldn’t fold down. Also the reason why it comes with the one way screw so you just can’t unbolt the lock. Plus if you bought a screw that was too long why cut it. Why not just buy a shorter screw? Also the tailgate handles lock are not just to lock the bed, it prevents someone from stealing the tailgate it’s self. Also those Handel locks are a joke. If someone wants to get in they will. Hell the lock cylinder in the door is only held in with plastic. All a douche bag needs is a hammer and a screw drive and they can get into your truck and then your screwed. You have a lot to learn about car brake ins if you think that Handel lock is going to secure your bed with a cover on it. Car in general are not hard to get into as it is.

Hey man thanks for the reply! Actually i had no idea about the door lock cylinders being so easily to break into and all the information. I was aware that some bed covers have locks on em and can prevent theft, but i figured having a lock on the tailgate handle would have been an extra safety precaution. Again, thanks for the all info, I’ll definitely remember for the future!

True, if a person wants in, he will get in. But this will prevent the thief in a WalMart parking lot from taking your gear in a matter of seconds. You park the truck overnight in a hotel parking lot, yeah, with more effort, they will get in. Good job on the video. I appreciate it.
