1999 Belmont Stakes : Full ABC Broadcast

Charismatic, standing on the threshold of sweeping the Triple Crown, missed his date with history yesterday when he ran third in the Belmont Stakes behind the 29-1 long shot Lemon Drop Kid. And, worse, in a stunning finish to the saga of the colt who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness at long odds, Charismatic fractured two bones in his left front leg as he crossed the finish line.
The injury did not appear to be life-threatening but it ended his racing career.
It also brought a sorrowful close to what had been a rousing day at Belmont Park, with a record crowd of 85,818 on hand in perfect weather to see if Charismatic could become the first horse in 21 years to win the Triple Crown. Instead, he became the 15th horse, and the third in three years, to win the Derby and Preakness but fail to cross the finish line first in the mile-and-a-half race.
Charismatic, who ran in a claiming race in February before surging to the top of the 3-year-old racing world in the past two months, will undergo surgery late this morning. Dr. Larry Bramlage, a veterinarian from Lexington, Ky., reported that the colt had cracked the cannon bone just above the ankle and had fractured the sesamoid behind it.
''It is not life-threatening,'' Bramlage said, ''but it definitely means his racing career is over. However, he should be fine as a stallion.''
Chris Antley, the jockey who overcame problems of weight and substance abuse and made a roaring comeback aboard Charismatic in the Derby and the Preakness, quickly jumped off the horse at the end of the race and lifted the colt's injured leg off the ground. Antley was clearly shaken by what had happened and was tearful as he spoke.
''He broke down right after we crossed the wire,'' he said. ''He gave us a lot. He gave America a lot.

Christopher Wiley Antley (1966-2000) set two records which, I think, no other jockey has equaled or exceeded yet: in 1987 he became the first rider to win nine races in a single day; and in 1989 he won at least one race a day during 64 straight days. On August 7th, 2015, Chris Antley was inducted to The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York. God bless him! Greetings from Venezuela.

I just finished reading the book "Three Strides Before the Wire," the story of the rise and fall of both Charismatic and Chris Antley. Very moving narrative of this memorable bid for the 1999 Triple Crown! this broadcast still brings tears to my eyes.

An interesting coincidence that I just noticed… At 29:41, as Charlsie Cantey reports from the paddock, with Secretariat’s statue visibly close behind her, she’s very optimistic about the chances of “Best of Luck” - because his trainer had earned the nickname of ‘The Giant Killer’: ALLEN JENKINS. Part of that glowing reputation came from Jerkens defeating… Secretariat. TWICE, no less 😳 This, after he had dominated the Triple Crown & appeared invincible. (Plus, 1 of those losses - the Woodward Stakes - happened right there on Belmont’s dirt track, at the full 1.5 mi. distance).

bnegs521 52:44 Not weird to me. Just like the guy said, they probably looked away after it was apparent the horse lost the TC and didn't realize what happened. Those places are chaotic and them not knowing is no different then Eight Belles connections in the Derby having no idea she was injured and immediately euthanized.

He did not follow D Wayne's instructions either. The ESPN 30 for 30 told the story that Antley was completely stoned out of his mind for this race and during this race.

To this day I think that this is the second worst ride Chris Antley ever rode. Everyone seems to think he was a hero for pulling him up. What was he doing going head to head with the filly ? The worst ride was a personal experience with a horse I ran years ago on the NY circuit
