Straight forward video, nicely done guys. One point though... instead of wielding a mallet in that confined space I have always found it preferable to either use a second mallet to apply force with the first mallet being held in place (less chance of collateral impact but a lot noisier) OR used a block of hardwood as a buffer.

Sometimes its easier to remove the caliper and strut to knuckle mount bolts. Then use the balljoint as the pivot/holder for the knuckle. Especially if the balljoint is an ornery one like this one. Stay gold.

That's what I did. I never like to do the lower ball joint unless I'm replacing the whole control arm assembly.

Even if you put the car up on 4 stands, gearbox/case oil is still going to come out when you pull the axle out from the transmission, correct? Second, where is the gearbox/case, how do you add oil to the case, and how much gear oil do I add?

There is a tool called a ball joint separator. I've used the kind that looks like a big tuning fork with a wedge and you hit the end of it with a mallet. There another kind that you turn a nut and the tool spreads out. Might make your day easier if you're doing this on the ground and don't feel like wailing on the parts with a hammer..

I performed this replacement on a 2000 Elantra. It was exactly the same procedure. A few notes. The axle nut came off very easily. The sway bar link does not completely have to be removed. A 4 lb hand sledge was necessary to pop the knuckle off the control arm. A regular hammer wasnt working at all.

I might suggest you use a ball joint remover (commonly called a "pickle fork") instead of the small sledge hammer. Also a brass hammer if you need to hit threads.

Be careful not to rip the boot, if anyone does this. You'll have to replace the ball joint if you do.

If you take the spindle out of the strut you do not have to mess with the ball joint and in many cases the tire end, so not need for a alignment after.

I'm parting out a 2003 my kid wrecked for parts for his 2002 GT and you aren't kidding. PB Blast is a God send. lol The only other issue was one of the ball joints kept spinning while getting the nut off at the top 2 threads. Nothing a little pb plast & a wire brush couldn't have prevented. In any case your videos are always right on the money. Thanks for making it fast & simple.

You mentioned to loosen the lug nuts with the vehicle on the ground if one doesn't have air tools. Question, why not loosen the axle nut also with the tire on the ground? Another point, you turned the nut around and partially threaded it onto the axle in order to hammer on it to break the axle free from the hub. My suggestion to minimize thread damage, thread the nut fully on, FLUSH with the face of the shaft, this will protect most of the threads, and utilize a small piece of wood (2x4) with the hammer to break it free. I'd rather muck up the 2x4 instead of the threads.. But otherwise, thank you for the video, i thought I was going to take more than that apart to get the shaft out. While I'm in there, I'm planning on replacing the Tie-Rod end. I know that the work performed won't effect the alignment, but I figure I'm in this far, replacing the Tie-Rod ends and getting an alignment is just taking advantage of being this far into the front end.

You can fix the joint, however the price for a new axle usually isn't a whole lot of money. Usually the labor cost involved with replacing the CV joint wipes out any cost savings and can be more involved then just purchasing a new axle. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Removing the CV axle from the knuckle can be a serious problem if the car is corroded. I had a terrible time getting mine off as it was seized in so badly that even wailing away at it with a 5lb hammer didn't free it up.
