Suspension is typically a very complex topic... I find it refreshing to see that in the past at least, engineers made suspension at simple as possible when things like leaf springs and torsion bars... They just seem so primitive and crayon simple to me. I love the concept of a torsion bar in general and how they work because you might actually be able to correct a sagging suspension on an old truck with a few turns of a screw. I think that's a great design. I found your video to be very informative, clear and safe.

Show us a pic of the lower A arm and how close it is to the bump stop now. One of the main problems with cranking the Tbars besides harsh ride is the angle of the drive joints and wear on ball joints.

@@williamiverson903 I design control arms but thank you for your opinion. The different index changes the angle of the torsion bar. The torsion bar is what positions the A arm.... If the torsion bar is in the same location, but the key is pushing higher than stock it keeps the angles the same.

The A arm is merely a lever with a fixed point on the frame. The only way to raise the ride hight is to drop the fixed point with proper lift bracket or steepen the angle. This is a fact regardless of what's holding the back side of the bar.

thanks to people like you.. i have a job. when you lift a chevy always loosen then tighten suspension bolts with the vehicle on the floor at the rubber bushings after the ride height change to keep from tearing out the bushings. some aligment guys dont do know to do this or are just to lazy to do it, so do it yourself then get an alignment at a good shop. and no, a key lift on a chevy does not accelerate ball joint/tie rod wear.. these usually last 60-90 k on a stock vehicle any way.

This is the argument I don’t understand, even if it accelerates it, I replaced my entire front end, new control arms and everything. It only cost MAYBE $500 And a days worth of slow paced work. Now I have more adjustment in my control arms, and if my joints start going bad after 50k miles, I’ll just swap them out in my driveway, cheap and easy. The ride height, bigger tires, and ground clearance are easily worth half a days worth of trouble every 50k+ miles. A lot of times the people complaining don’t just level, they throw in bigger wheels and tires, end up hauling ass into ditches and mud holes, then complain the suspension wore out faster than stock. Of course it did.

Did this to my 2000 Silverado 1500 about a month after I bought it last year. The torsion bars had fatigued and the lower A arms were riding on the jounce bumpers. They need .5 to .75 inch clearance. I did a shock extension kit because the factory ones are ridiculously short. Adjusted the headlights and had an alignment done. The camber was out. After that I added upgraded anti roll bars front and rear and yesterday had a Detroit trutrac installed to replace the broken G80. I think I need to go to one of them meetings where you state your name and confess that you have a problem.

If you just want a little lift the factory Keys should be able to do it, my 99 yukon lifted almost 2 inches cranked all the way. Not that I would run them their do to upper control arm allmost hitting droop stop. The ride quality will not be any better with new keys. Think of it like this, to raise the car to a certain height you have to twist the tor. bar until it gets their period, I dont care how the key is indexed! The ride quality will be what it is with the bars twisted to whatever point it takes to lift the car to desired height no matter where the keys are indexed.

Tell me yall're dumbasses without tellin me you're dumbasses. That's the point of the adjustment cog inside of the lift key. The torsion bar AND torsion key twists TOGETHER when the control arms go up and down. The cog lifts or lowers the height of the front-end without bottoming out both the torsion key and the adjustment bolt that was meant only to fine tune the height, not actually be a lift kit unto itself. Since you're not bottoming out the adjustment bolt and the torsion key, you're also retaining suspension travel, which is what bottoming out the torsion key kills.

If the truck twitchs or dives to one side while hard or emergency braking it will be because of your improper adjustments.

Useless! These keys have the same effect as tightening the oem torsion bolts. Truck becomes jumpy because the lower control arm rubber bumper stops are now not resting on the control arms. Normally the bump stops are resting on the control arm, absorbing the roughness. When you tigthen the bolts, you add more tention to the torsion bar and that lifts the truck. Maxx keys create that tention with minimum tention set with the bolt but the offset on the key already sets that tention. I wish some suspention expert would actually create something that would extend the bumper stops so they still rest on the control arm to soften the ride by absorbing some tention from the torsion bars.

@@jrcobb8076 tell me about it, bunch of broke as mofos. Clearly they haven't seen the difference in keys. I bought a pair of used Rough Country keys for $40. They're about a quarter inch wider and noticeably heavier. On top off that the key offset is different. Cranking the stock keys puts a much harsher angle on the bolts, which isnt the case with the aftermarket keys because the offset corrects that angle. The bolts can and do break with stock keys cranked too much. That said, if you're only looking for a slight lift and win't be going off pavement much, a little crank on the stock keys is fine.

After you took your torsion key stop out, looks like your torsion bar to lower control arm bushing was shot for wobbling around that much. That affects your height too. Might want to change your bushing while you have your torsion bar out.

The reason the ride isn't as smooth as factory is because you preload the control arm bushings when you crank the torsion bars up. Whenever you adjust the torsion bars you must loosen all four control arm bolts so they can move freely and then adjust the bars and once you have the ride height you want then tighten the control arm bolts and have the truck aligned. If you do it this way it retains the factory comfort level.
@iWatchVideosAtHome
@iWatchVideosAtHome 5 жыл бұрын
And remember to snug the bolts, rest the vehicle down on its suspension, then torque down the bolts, or the bushings will start to squeak on you. Also good luck on these 4 bolts if your truck lives in the salt belt. Had to use a cutting torch on my last truck to get UCA bolts out.

@STANREMLEY
@STANREMLEY 5 жыл бұрын
@@nickluchowski Not to be a jerk but I am an ASE certified mechanic and I can tell you that your theory is pointless. The control arm bushings are already set in for one.. if they were installed correctly to begin with (attachment fasteners torqued and torque angle applied, if applicable, with the suspension under static load). Second, all that adjusting torsion key bolts does is adjusts the Z trim height. It does this by turning the torsion bars which in turn rotates and sets the lower control arms at a different angle (positive angles raise, negative angles lower the trim height). During all drive cycles, the control arms operate through this same range of motion they are going through during a torsion key adjustment. Nothing is binding during the adjustment, nothing new is being applied that dictates a special service other than a wheel alignment check/adjust to finalize the RO. So any positive results you are experiencing is all in your head.

Ive been looking and researching lifts for my 2017 2500Hd and ive come to conclusion that you have to buy a lift kit that has keys,upper control arms,dif and shock spacer to keep the factory ride quality. Changing the keys makes the truck ride like a 3 legged cow in a sand pit. Do it right the first time. These kits can be bought for around 1000 bucks.

That might be true for new low milage trucks. This was a 2003 old ass truck that has and old worn out suspension. It needs a bit of firming up from all the sag its developed over 15 years. My 04 is in the same boat. The suspension is squishy and needs firming up. We're not looking at lifting it, we're trying to get the thing back closer to the way it was when it was sold.

I have been seeing videos were people are leveling vehicles a lot in the last year. there is a few reasons why trucks and SUVs are higher in the rear. 1 If you are carrying a load it keeps you from looking ridiculous. 2 that little bit of nose down reduces wind resistance by leveling you will be paying more for gas.

No. Older vehicles the torsion bars and keys are more worn in. This truck is 15 years old or older. Maxing out the stock key won't give you the extra inch. More than likely one of his keys was already maxed out.

@2:00 I have these same torsion keys in my OBS and I noticed my driver side UCA was resting on the droop stop but not the passenger side. I uncranked the keys to lower the front end and give clearance between UCA and that droop stop. My question is: are these aftermarket keys supposed to lift the front end without the risk of hitting the droop stop or what’s the deal?… after gaining the clearance back for my UCA I feel like I should have just kept the OG torsion keys and just cranked on those. Any input helps

This is for folks who don't grasp what this torsion key does to achieve both lift and retain most of the factory ride. Because, honestly, this guy does nothing at all to explain how this product works, he's just a shill for the manufacturer of the product. The torsion bar AND torsion key twists TOGETHER when the control arms go up and down. The cog inside the torsion key lifts or lowers the height of the front-end without bottoming out both the torsion key and the adjustment bolt that was meant only to fine tune the height, not actually be a lift kit unto itself. Since you're not bottoming out the adjustment bolt and the torsion key, you're also retaining suspension travel, which is what bottoming out the torsion key kills.
