I got my first skateboard about 30 days ago, a present to myself for turning 45, and started teaching myself to ride it. I found your channel a few days later via instagram. Your videos have helped me to make it through this first month of getting my balance back and learning to ride at all. It's so easy to get discouraged by expecting too much of yourself, by absorbing the gatekeeping ideas some skaters have, by internalized ableism that makes you want to quit rather than adapt the sport to your needs. Your small-pieces approach to learning and progressing, and the way you bring it to every video you make, has grounded me and given me a list of things to look forward to. When I told my mom I was learning to skateboard, and described how your approach helps me to fight anxiety and frustration, she told me about the two quarters of intro figure skating she took in college, and how even though her progress was slow she loved practicing figures and movements. She'd never told me about that before! I've showed her your channel. I'm so glad you're making these videos, and I'm sure many more people are benefiting than just those of us who comment. Thanks so much.

First of all, welcome to skateboarding! Second of all, I really get where you're coming from. Skateboarding is the strangest of hobbies as it can actually become very unenjoyable very quickly. So, I'm so glad that you've been enjoying it and resonated with the kind of skate philosophy, breakdowns videos that I've made on this channel. (Super yes to adapting the sport to your needs and ability 💯!) Also, your mom is so cool. I bet figure skating is also really difficult! Really cool you could relate with her on this too. Stoked for you! And excited for your skate journey 🙌

Ay! Bubbleflip. Yeah, really...I think we've followed each other almost from the beginning of my skate journey at least. Glad you liked the video 😃 I figured since most non-ollie trick videos only focused on "easier" tricks, it'd be cool to kind of show the spectrum. That you can do cool, hard tricks without ollies as well. 🙌

@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 2 жыл бұрын
haha thank you! 😃 I hope the methods help you with your progress 💪 I actually put a ton of time in in the beginning. During the first 6 months, I was probably skating 6 days a week for almost an hour (which is a lot more doable when focusing on freestyle since there is a lot less impact). But, it was definitely way too much. For the next 6 months, I probably skated 3 to 5 times a week depending on my schedule and how much recovery I needed. I value recovery a lot more now, so I'm taking my sessions one by one 💪

Hey Sarah love your break downs. I dont understand how you enter the footplant for a footplant caveman. I cnat work out it you are jumping into a quick tail stall then jumping off or if its a whole different technique. I can roll on my longboard and push off the tail to catch the front end of the board while i run but on a short board it feels really sketch to me. Any tips? Many thanks Bec, Western Australia

@@SarahParkMatott wow you have it all!! lol so glad i found your channel. i do have one question after watching your kick turn video. this sounds silly but, when im pushing i usually have my foot a bit behind the bolts (like ollie foot positioning). if im skating and go up a bank and turn, how can i shift my foot a bit more, as i feel like my foot stance might throw me off as im not as squared as you are in the tutorial (yours are on the front bolts). am i overthinking it ? or does this really impact kickturns
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 3 жыл бұрын
@@EpicBeastism Your foot positioning could definitely affect the kick turn based on how comfortable you feel. Typically, the wider (more over the bolts) and squarer your stance is, the more balance you have. So, if you're doing a kick turn with your feet too close together or too angled it might be uncomfortable or hard to turn. It's definitely worth trying to just push up to the ramp with your front foot already over the bolts or closer to the bolts. Or you can wiggle/inch your front foot forward before you get to the bottom of the ramp/bank while riding. But I wouldn't adjust that foot while on the ramp/bank! I hope this helps :D

I love how you’re one of the few keeping them old school flat land trucks alive and relatable. I started with some of those tricks back in the mid 90s and used to think I was lame cause I couldn’t kick flip: the 90s was a rough time to skate cause it was so hated at that point. So glad the core stuff is still being used.
