Thanks! I was gifted my Dad’s 2000 Camry with 250,000+ miles on it and I’m doing as much maintenance on it as I can. My Chilton manual fell a little short on describing this filter change. This video straightened me out.

this is one hell of a job, smooth sailing until you get to the lower line, at least for me and my 97 Celica with 230,000 miles, even using the prescribed flare wrenches. Did it in the end but for a while I thought I'd need a Plan B!

Please LISTEN as you watch - As I said, I used a 19 for the upper nut. I stated that I didn't have a LINE WRENCH for the fuel LINE so I used vise grips. Don't over think this, with all due respect, it's really not that complicated.

Very very helpful! Removing the air box and its bracket was great advice. The couple other vids I found the person did all kinds of goofy stuff to get to that bottom bolt.

VISE GRIPS YIKES. IT TOOK ME THREE DAYS TO GET MY FILTER LOOSE. KEPT OUTTING PENETRATING OIL ON THE BOTTOM NUT. FINALLY USED A TINY WIRE BRUSH AND PB BLASTER. THE LINE WRENCH DID IT. I WENT AND BOUGHT A SET. $21 AT LOWES, CRAFTSMAN. MADE IN GOOD OLD TIAWAN WHAT A DISGRACE. NICE WRENCHES THOUGH.

Doug , thanks..my 2001 Camry LE has ONLY 92,000 miles and it's a second owner car. I've never had trouble with it. I was trying to figure out where the fuel filter was..and how is the best way to get it out.

I was about to write what I just read by kperry5000; A demonstration video should be just that. Actually show what you did, not tell us what you've already done then describe it. If something was difficult to remove for example, that is the exact thing I want to see on a video. I don't care if he's seen worse looking air filters as he described twice. The things that are useful to know are things like what size and types of tools I will need, what preparations to make before starting, safety concerns and precautions (like disconnecting the fuel pump fuse and dispelling the gas pressure). There is some information to be had here but I find it confusing for the reasons I've mentioned. Conversely, I now know where the fuel filter is on my car and what it looks like. I would encourage the author to make more of these videos as this was informative and helpful generally and it would give him an opportunity to improve his video making skill.

Not yet. I'm still gathering information. Before I even buy one, I look into what's available and get what I can in terms of reviews or, if possible, evidence of what will be the best in price and performance. I looked into the Wix filter that you installed but that exact model isn't available in the US. There is another Wix model that will fit though. It looks like the biggest difficulty people have had is loosening the bottom bolt without damaging the fuel line. I will definitely use penetrating oil just as you did. Other contenders are Toyota OEM, Mahle, AC Delco, Beck-Arnley and Bosch.

I've had the car for 8 years and never changed it so I think the one in there must be pretty dirty. The Chilton book recommends changing it every 30,000 miles, a website recommends every 50,000 miles.

Mine was 17 years old when I changed it last year, I also read that Toyota rated it as a lifetime filter but I did it regardless. I just used a Driveworks filter because I was working part time at Advance Auto Parts.

Hello, I have a 2000 camry 2.2l witk 96k miles with high postive long term fuel trim at 20% at idle, short term flucuates between potisve and negative 5% , but at higher rpm the long term fuel trim drops to 5%, but I cannot find a vaccum leak visibly, would a exhaust manifold or intake manifold leak would cuase this? Or would a bad fuel injector cause this? I also have do NOT have check engine light on. Also I've replaced both 02 sensors, pcv and valvet cover gasket, cleaned throttle body, swapped spark plugs.

Also you have to be very careful not to put the bottom bolt in crooked like I did and strip the threads on the filter had to go buy another one

There are two places that you can attach a vise grip; the filter extension bolt and the fuel line tightening bolt. I cannot determine which bolt was clamped with the vise grip.

I tried replacing my fuel filter this weekend. Bought it from autozone, duralast brand. I was able to remove the original fuel filter, install the new duralast filter but when I turn the car on it leaks like crazy from the bottom where the inlet screws in. Any advice? I tighten it with two wrenches, a socket wrench on the banjo bolt and a line wrench for the inlet. This way I can get really good torque.

Double check that it's not leaking from the top (banjo) bolt and running down, make sure you used the new washer. If you are sure it's leaking from the bottom check and see that the nut isn't cross threaded, verify that the end of the fuel line is true and that there isn't a foreign object that would keep the fuel line from seating properly.

I recently replaced my gas canister thing in my 2000 Camry but I'm noticing a strong exhaust / gas smell when the car idles. What could that be? No check engine lights and I have just shy of 400000 miles. I get in the upper 30s on the highway so my gas mileage has been great.

A common problem is the flex pipe rusting through, you should be able to hear an exhaust leak.

Need help! On my way to trouble shoot my sons 98 Camry. Grandpa hand-me down car, 250K+ miles wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the original filter. **described to me** Car on “E”, car died while driving but no “fuel light came on”, car cranks strong. So far: He had a 1.5 gal gas can and put that in the car, cranks strong but no go. I’m guessing fuel system (somewhere). On my way to check it out. Question: Is there a way to check, beyond the filter, if the engine is getting fuel? I’m no mechanic but I just had to do a filter “overhaul” on my boat (BBC 454 W/dual tanks) so I’m not COMPLETELY lost in the sauce, just partially so far. Appreciate any help!! Thanks.

Sorry so long getting back to you. I would check for spark first, if there is then check for fuel. Check the fuel pump fuse and relay. Verify there is fuel in the tank, turn ignition on and off a few times to pressurize the system, slowly loosen a fuel filter fitting until fuel comes out under pressure.

I have a 98 camry. I was about to run out of gas, I filled it up. Then a min or two going down the road it started not accelerating & making a weird sputtering noise & completely died. Everyone who stopped said it's the battery & alternator, but was driving perfectly fine before I filled up. I just replaced alternator, starter, and battery within 6 months. It wont start now got it towed. Do you think it could be a fuel injection got clogged? It's so weird as it was driving fine before getting gas no hesitation when starting or anything.

It sounds fuel related to me, replace the FUEL FILTER and go from there.

I just replaced my fuel pump. Now I can hear it working, but the car still won't start. Engine turns over. I hesitate to pull the fuel filter, but I will if needed. Do I need to purge the fuel line other than turning on the ignition a few times? Like 10 times so far. Checked the fuses and relays and they're all good. New pump does work. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

@@douglasware1115 I was finally able to trace the problem to a broken ground wire that was feeding the ignition packs. I reestablished a new ground. Now I'm just waiting on the cool air intake hose assembly since the old one cracked when I went to remove it. Always something with these old cars. Thanks for the reply.

It's because most KZbinrs are not trying to make professional videos and do it as a hobby. They may not have others to help them with the camera while they remove the part or may not have a tripod. I appreciate that this user was able to upload as this video helped me alot. I just skip around and take what I need from a bunch of different videos.

I replaced the fuel pump on my 99 Camry about a month ago. Since then it has sometimes surged and cut off like it was doing before I changed it. Today it’s starting to cut off and not want to start back up and when it does it revs way up then cuts back off. Is this the filter causing this?

Thanks David, I love me some RHCP. Wanna hear something messed up? Last year I posted a video review of a Magcharger flashlight Terralux LED upgrade, comparing it with the original halogen bulb. I spent a good deal of time on the video complete with subtitles. At one point during the 15 minute video, the music police detected 20 seconds of Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" playing in the background. The video was removed from KZbin and I received an email from Atlantic Records telling me what a bad boy I was for rebroadcasting copyrighted material. Squash the little guy, right? Still SMH over it.

I have this same car but in a manual transmission. It has recently started running really sluggish. I get more RPMs than actual power when pressing the throttle. I have used a can of sea foam to try and improve this. Is the fuel filter the next logical step, or do you have any other suggestions?

Yes. I just had the codes checked. It came back with catalytic converter, thermostat system malfunction, and camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction.

I'm still not sure that you should but I did mine anyway, I have received conflicting reports as to if it's a lifetime filter or not. If it's running fine leave it alone. Mine is a 2000 with 216,000 miles, I have myself done two timing belts, water pump, struts, valve cover gaskets, flex pipe (2), exhaust pipes, radiator, and ball joints. I love my car as you do, let's drive 'em 'til they blow up! :)

@@georgeprivon5567 I purchased them on Ebay. They were either US Stock or KYB, I can't remember which. They are holding up well after a few years. Do yourself a favor, spend a little more money on the whole assembly instead of just the strut.

I try to replace mine on my Toyotas every 75k miles to prevent future problems. The cars have mixed driving. I would think changing the fuel filter at 75K miles would extend the life of the fuel pump, make the cars more reliable, and avoid expensive diagnosis bills down the road. Still on the first fuel pump at 200K miles and 150K miles. It sounds like I can let them go longer from now on, I think I'll wait 100k miles in the future.
