I love wheeling my RD1 CRV. Great to see someone wheeling it down under, too! That's awesome. Considering Honda never intended it to be a hardcore off-roader, they did an incredible job engineering it, because it does amazingly well off road.
@isakjetbean5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, they're such lightweight cars they don't need to have power to go offroad, you just need to use your head a little and walk out your tracks and plan where your wheels need to be. As long as you think before you drive it and ease yourself into the more tricky tracks you'll always get there!
@WhiteCavendish5 жыл бұрын
@@isakjetbean Absolutely. I'm very glad that the CR-V was my first 4wd, because it forces me to be a better driver off-road. You have to think and take the time to pick just the right line, so you get in the habit of it, and when you do, the V will amaze you every time. One of the most fun things about wheeling one is the look of disbelief on people's faces when you show up somewhere they think would be impossible for you lol

@isakjetbean5 жыл бұрын
Yo I completely missed your comment so sorry dude. Thank you for the kind words for starters 🙏 The X-Trail did surprisingly well. It has very close to the same clearance as the CRV did stock but it does have a transfer case and 2.5L engine and more torque despite weighing basically the same. That said, it scraped a lot, the boot latch broke and cost $60 to replace, and the engine ended up dying shortly later anyway so I can't speak so much to the reliability. With a lift and bash plate, it might have stood a chance 🤷♂️

@isakjetbean5 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Honestly, it's just equal parts picking the right line and knowing the car and what it can do. Mine has a rear diff swap with an Element, so it's a bit better offroad, and I have a decent lift including new springs so it handles itself really well. It's also manual. Other than that, I just walk out my tricky lines and air down every time and it doesn't let me down!
@MartinsLife5 жыл бұрын
@@isakjetbean can you swap in any rear element diff? Same final drive as CRV? I have the same gen as you. Is it LSD?
@craigiefconcert64933 жыл бұрын
Good to know about the element differential. I can get one from the junkyard pretty cheap.
@isakjetbean3 жыл бұрын
Lucky. I spent a couple hundred less importing one to Australia than it will cost me for the fulltime awd drivetrain rebuild I'm doing that's using landrover parts and custom shaft adaptors.

This is by far the best RD1 off-road video I’ve seen! Thanks for posting!!! I love my RD1 and I was thinking of getting rid of it for a truck or 4Runner. I started working in British Columbia Canada and will have to work in the mountains sometimes. I may be able to use the RD1…. I see you have a lift kit and bigger tires so I’m thinking about that. The one thing I wonder though is if my old somewhat rusty car can take that kind of slamming around. It may rip the rear suspension off the car.
@isakjetbean3 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine it having too many issues with a lift getting up and down tracks but a real 4x4 will always be better for that sort of thing. That said, these are old so new bushings, shocks, springs etc do a big deal towards whether you're breaking stuff. To be completely honest if you're not into cars on a level where you want to work on them and build it up for the driving you want to do, it's better to get something more capable. These things are fun as hell but you can only go so far before you have to spend big money on things like a higher final drive for the front and either boost or engine swap because they're not amazing on the steeper hills, you really have to hit the hill at the right speed which might not be ideal for a work vehicle.

Doesn't have anything to engage 4x4 except a weird Viscous coupler/Clutch pack/Hydraulic pump hybrid to engage on demand. No abs at all. So pretty much just pick a good line and trust that 4x4 engages when it needs to. I replaced my rear with a stronger Honda diff in the same casing and engages faster and harder than stock ones though
