This 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero is a mostly stock example driven daily by its owner all over the US. It features a 2.3L Turbocharged Four-Cylinder engine with a manual transmission. Its mild upgrade list includes EBC Brake Rotors and Pads, Bilstein Rear and Sachs front struts, and BF Goodrich Sport Comp 2 Tires. It is a well-mannered cruiser that would make quite the comfortable daily driver or road tripper.

This should be a rarity because there are no Saabs in California so this is Daniel.
When did you move from Vermont? [LAUGHS] I'm just kiddin I was born in the Valley, actually.
2.3 four-cylinder turbo with the big turbo.
For you, I've got new Sport Comp 2s Ooh! Those are good tires.
Yes, new EBC rotors and pads and we delayed the shoot so I can get new struts so we've got A block in the back, stocks in the front.
They really are this one is a hydraulic so it's a little nicer.
Saabs are good for learning easy Now I learned on my '95 900 when I used to have it.
Yeah! How great were those? Yeah, I loved it.
Is this seat heater on right now? Yeah, you can turn it off.
Anyway, what drew you to the 9-5? Well, before this I had a '95 Saab 900.
Which was the only result? No, there's plenty of options? Are there? I don't see Saabs very often.
But I like Saabs; they're safe, they're individualistic.
Yeah it's a European car that's not a BMW or Mercedes And it's near luxury Yeah it's mostly when these were new this was pretty luxury I think.
I see you've got your car camping stickers and your Coachella sticker so is this you're like Coachella hotel? It is, I take it to Coachella every year.
You get good fuel economy? Yeah, it can - I get about 20, 21.
I've taken it as far North as Seattle, as far East as Vegas and as far South as Coachella.
156 thousand miles how many miles were on it when you got it? I bought it 3 years ago at 98 thousand Okay, and has it been a champ? Mostly.
What is broken that you've had to fix? Quite a few things, you can see them all on my Wheelwell.
So to name them let's see: fuel pump, starter, alternator, battery, old serpentine belt.
Alright so not terrible I mean those are some things but not really catastrophic yeah and you're talking about a car that had a hundred km on it when you bought it so alright, alright.
And three years ago it was $5000 I say it's served you pretty well I've enjoyed it.
It's got me in trouble you could get in trouble with this.
That's what the smoothness and it got really smooth powers you could be up-what is that? Coyote Yeah Kinda cute one too you can easily be up in 80 or 90 miles an hour.
I can believably admit to 90 mph 'cos I've been ticketed for that.
You're good [LAUGHS] I like that - you know I have a really bad back - so I really like this like upright driving position and the visibility is really good I should have told you about the lumbar support that's kind of- tell me about it now It's on the side, it's a knob It should be fully engaged though It feels like it's engaged... I just messed it all up I ruined it.
I usually go to... I can't remember the name right now but they're in Simi Valley, right behind Jack In The Box I'll shout out Swedish Pro-Tech in Hermosa.
The good news is, you're kind of invisible in this; no one's really looking at a silver Saab.
Yeah I got that ticket at 4 in the morning so there's only one to look at.
DANIELS: Yeah the synchros are failing in third definitely, in second and fourth sometimes but third is the trouble child.
The only issue with this engine is oil issues.
Oiling issues, you were saying? Yeah, oil isssues.
That could be catastrophic Well I'm pretty good at picking on top of it Like oil leaking or oil pressure? Well I've got a very slow oil leak and I think it's combined with burning oil as well Ah well that's what an old Ger- I almost said German an old European car is for.
I can definitely be on board with you there, Daniel.
Thanks man, check out Daniel's Wheelwell to see what it takes to keep a Saab 9-5 running and apparently it's quite a bit but it's worth it for the seats.
All the interior money went to the seats - press the plastic under the speedo.

Tuned Saab 9-5s are crazy fast on a roll, with 300hp and tq. The faster they go, the faster they accelerate. I love my 9-3 SS. Saab have the best seats other than Volvo. Like Alfa Romeos, only the owners truly could appreciate how special they are. They are great road trip cars, great winter cars. Cheap to buy, cheap to maintain...and can be made fast with a simple tune. They are reliable too - the things that went wrong on this car would go on any other car at 100k miles.
@Jaroneko
@Jaroneko 7 жыл бұрын
9-5s are reliable, smooth and comfortable _if_ you look after them. They are complicated enough with enough "SAABisms", that neglecting maintenance or just doing "the usual stuff" and not what the manufacturer specifies will lead you to trouble and unfortunately there are examples that will work fine on a test drive but are so far gone in many parts that you may have a heap of trouble when it all starts going wrong. My basis for saying this is having had maybe a dozen SAABs total in the family over time and my retired father having two 9-5s at the moment, both of which I largely look after. That said, they really are great long haulers when you keep them in shape.

ChaosphereIX On my second 9-5, far from cheap to maintain and I'm writing this as I'm having the engine in mine replaced at 309k km...but agreed with everything else!
@ChaosphereIX
@ChaosphereIX 7 жыл бұрын
my 9-3 is cheap as hell to maintain, although I do take good care of it. As with any Euro car, it is no Corolla - they need a little TLC and attention/preventative maintenance and will reward you with many years of trouble free driving. 300,000kms on a 2.3T engine is good AFAIK. Cheap to maintain as in any GM mech can work on it, any indy can work on it [except for electrics that is an issue]...and parts are not any more expensive than any GM product.

My wife drives 9-5 2.3 t aero wagon with mild tuning, 360Hp on wheels, and this is with stock internals but modified exhaust, turbo , sparkpl., and engine management and better clutch to handle raised torque + slightly bigger injectors and fuel pump ...(stock is 260Hp on crank) And this one is daily driver(been in family with that tuning for 6 years allready, driven every day average `bout 20.000 Km / year), i had one 9-3 with forged pistons +machined head + slightly bigger turbo (hx35) + lim. diff slip and same tuning parts than my wifes car have and i dynoed 440Hp on wheels. Saabs are so easy to tune to 500Hp mark, after that you need to change few parts but i know many guys who has almost 500Hp saab as daily driver...

The saab was my first car I ever had accident in, when I was 12 I took my girlfriend to gravity hill out in Sylmar Ca and spun out. After that I was hooked. At 30 now own a 2013 Si, 2001 integra Rs, 2005 350z and a ap2 s2k. Brought back some memories lol. Local cop pulled over. Had a bunch of chips spilled on the seats, and all I remember was "boii, you young. If I was on duty I'd take you in. Here, call your parents come pick ya up" damn, best day of my life.

Geno I'm building a b235r motor which will be good for 1000whp with Wössner Pistons, Verdi Rods... I don't plan to ever come close to that number but between 400 and 500whp on e85 and a gt2876R fully done over Koni Suspension and Eibach springs. At the moment I am at 315wheel on e85 and 60lb injectors. I have a 2000 Viggen. Ghost build in the making. Not a straight line jet but a multipurpose road/ track car.

I had a 2001 Aero. had the optional BBS wheel package. perfect road trip car. drove from Sacramento to San Diego on one tank of gas and the counter showed I still had 60 miles to empty. Great power for its time. when new 120 MPH + was easily attained, and it felt glued to the ground the entire time. I miss that car!

The day has arrived, lol. Great video! I've owned 6 SAAB 9-5s and currently have two. In Europe a lot of people tune saabs and quite a few in the US now as well. I've seen this motor with 1000hp and because GM had there hands in things you can mate them to many transmissions including a T56 for your RWD needs. They are definitely an odd ball and can be quite the sleeper and they're comfortable and safe. As far as oil issues all you need is some good full synthetic oil and regular oil changes and it won't be an issue. He probably needs a few simple seals. Maybe one day I'll make it out to Calli with a big turbo 9-5 and you can have a go Matt.

When I tell you that in the 18 months i owned my 03 9-5, I had every single issue that he listed. I got physical pains when he started talking about the oil leak. I never actually got that one fixed. I took it in for an oil change and the mechanic told me there was no oil in my car and to tow it to a saab specialist. Spent as much as was paid for the car in repairs in such a short time. Still the best car I've ever had. Miss it every day. I hope to own several when I've got the money for that.

I simply love it! My boss 15 years ago had a few, 1 sedan, later estates. I drove them quite a few times for hundreds of miles as my boss's personal driver, from the Netherlands all the way to the Alps. They are so fast, while still being very comforable. The balance between performance and comfort is just superb. No Mercedes, Audi or BMW (of same era, ofcourse) can compete! Years later when I worked as a car detailer I drove too many cars, but the Saab's felt always the best. I'm wanting a 9-5 Vector or Aero for a long time now but still wasn't able to. Hopefully within the next few years. I just HAVE to own one at least once... The reason Saab's are so good is that the engineers kept on engineering despite out of budget. That's the best spirit you can have as a car brand. And because Saab was too much underrated made them bankrupt. I still can't believe how it didn't become more popular.

Been waiting for a long time to see you get behind the wheel of a 9-5 Aero Matt! I had an '03 and it was certainly a contender for the best car I've ever owned. Eventually went with a BSR tune that killed my motor but you know how that goes. You nailed it on the comfort of the seats and being a roadtrip cruiser. That said, just from your reaction I'm not sure this guys car was all there mechanically. The 9-5 Aero was faster than the same year 996 Turbo 40-70 which should have covered most of your drive there with some serious pull at the front wheels. Hopefully the owner finds this but you might want to try plugging your boost pressure switch line too see if you get some power back.

I agree, this car seemed a little down on power. Saabs of yore were typical heavily turbocharged FWD cars - heavy surge in mid range, torque steer. Mine gives a satisfying shove when I floor it. This seemed to be lacking that shove.

I recently bought a 9-5 aero Stage 3 tuned (Software, 3" dp and exhaust) with ~300hp. And over 100km/h it really pulls. Because of the shitty tires that came on it I have some wheelspin issues though

SAABs are usually overbuilt and overengineered but the one thing they NEVER figured out was how to make the SAAB signs not loose the color. I was actually thinking "hey the insignia on the hood still has the... oh the one on the steering wheel is busted"

I have a Viggen which has the same 2.3 engine, and is prone to sludging. I haven't heard that dreaded pump starvation whine yet, and will eventually pull the pan, but plan on replacing all the bushings first. I have had two 900s and currently drive a '11 9-3 manual as a daily, so I am hooked.

The 9-5 Aero is a good cruiser. If you want to drive very long distances and arrive well preserved, there is no better car. The oil 'issue' on those cars is manageable by first, dropping the sump and cleaning the pickup screen..then fit the latest PCV update kit and finally using only a good quality full synthetic oil and changing it at the correct interval. Modding that 9-5 T7 block past 270-280 hp is pushing it. The T5 (earlier) block and internals were much, much stronger and did not suffer the piston blow-by issue. Those are good for massive HP and torque with very little changes. The hot setup is to build the 2.3 around the 9000 block with a good set of forged pistons and the T7 head. Properly tuned and modded, 300+ hp can be had...and quite reliably. Horsepower ratings in the 260-285 range for these cars are all you'll ever need anyway, since putting more to the ground is extremely difficult in such a light FWD car.

Always will be a Saab fan. Best bang for your buck used car. Both my 900S and 9-3 2.0t have been more reliable than my Acura Integra and Lexus RX300. If you want a european car without breaking the bank, buy a Swedish Saab or Volvo. And the Saab turbo models handle great and put you in your seat, especially with a chip tune. Save the SAABs !
@bartg7790

Try to find a tuned 06+ Saab 9-3 Aero 2.8T to drive. Even a stage 1 tune on a stock 9-3 produces a gain of 70hp and 150tq for 320hp 410tq. For less than $1500 in add ons a Stage 5 will get you 415hp 530tq and they have been known to achieve 195mph. I have a feeling they transferred some of their knowledge of aerodynamics from their fighter jets. Awesome cars and very reliable and solid motors.

"Well-damped and bushed ..." I know exactly the sensation he means. Great way to describe it. An utter absence of which is the reason I'm selling my Volvo XC 90. Great car on paper but it feels like driving a bucket of parts when compared with the German cars I've driven. And really, how expensive can sound-proofing be?

It's funny because I just sold my xc90 and picked up a c30. I know exactly what you mean though, Volvo suspensions require a lot of maintenance
@adamf.4823
@adamf.4823 7 жыл бұрын
It only has 6,000 miles on it. I suppose I should bring it in for service to see if there is something wrong with the suspension but there are many other things I don't like about the car. The tire noise is louder in the cabin than my Porsche 911, the touch screen is annoying, the engine is peaky, the steering feel is nonexistent. I do believe it is one of the safest cars on the road and bought it for that reason. But as a driving enthusiast I would warn anyone who enjoys the feel of a good driver's car to stay away. It is miserable to drive. Does the C30 drive better?
@Eastcoastcarclub
@Eastcoastcarclub 7 жыл бұрын
I would for sure take it to the dealer and have them check it out, I had one of the older xc90s that really started seeing some issues at 150k. Im guessing you have one of the new-gen ones? And yes the C30 is a lot more fun to drive, but mine is an R Design so it has the stiffer suspension setup which so far has been somewhat back breaking on the horrible roads my city has.
