HOW TO, DIY, Diesel, Mercedes, Sprinter
I had to go back and redo this job about a month later due to the water sensor leaking. I found that I could remove the filter by loosening the 5 mm Allen key without removing the fuel filter holder. This speeds up the job a lot.
You will need various items to pull this job off / affiliate links:
7 mm, 1/4" drive socket
10 mm, 1/4" drive socket
E10, 1/4" drive socket, amzn.to/3CyU8Er
T15 screw driver, amzn.to/2VY993h
5 mm Allen key
Needle nose pliers
3/16" clear tubing, amzn.to/3CyUjQ7
Package of 11-13 mm high pressure fuel line clamps, amzn.to/3o6asZJ
Package of 14-16 mm high pressure fuel line clamps, amzn.to/3o6asZJ
I did not measure the fuel filter to see what size line it requires but you should have some new fuel line available.
Affiliate Links:
-Gearwrench Deep E-Torx ¼” Drive Socket Set: 80322, amzn.to/3qCt4PG
-E10 1/4" Drive Shallow Socket: amzn.to/3qBA6Ea
-KS Tools E Torx Star Double Offset Wrenches (German): 911.0360, amzn.to/39Pn1kG
-Milwaukee 9 in 1 Torx Screw Driver: 48-22-2133, amzn.to/3gnTRKJ
-Milwaukee 9 in 1 Metric Hex Screw Driver: 48-22-2136, amzn.to/33ShAhc
-High Pressure Fuel Line Clamp Kit: amzn.to/2VT1zDc

Very helpful, many thanks. Especially the exploration of the whole engine with your assessment and checking the oil cooler for possible leaks

Thank you Stephen for your video!, I have a 2007 JEEP Commander with the same OM642 engine, and will do this job soon, also have a lot of oil leakage reaching down to the oil pan!...will check, but I think is from the oil cooler...maybe I'll leave that 20 hr. job to a mechanic.

I Really enjoy your videos & you make it easy to understand. I was wondering if you could do a MAP Sensor location & Clean. Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor. I Can't find mine & have researched it & i have no responses. thank you.

@27:00 yes that is where to put the 4700 ohm resistor. You disconnect the 2-pin connector from the motor and push the resistor tails into the connector instead. It doesn't make the swirl motor "work", in fact it stops it working because it is a waste of space, and only causes trouble if (when) it fails. The resistor keeps the car electronics happy.

I came here for advice on how to change my GC fuel filter. After 9 m 45 sec I gave up with not 1 bolt turned. I know what a 12mm socket looks like.

A good reason to keep the engine cover on, at least in the UK, is so that the inspector in the annual roadworthiness test (the MoT) can't see that you have done the swirl motor by-pass mod. I think the swirl motor was some MB intern's pet project, because it seems to make sod-all difference to the emmissions or performance.

MOT inspector will have no interest in any swirl motor bypass.

Thanks for posting this! Very thorough and given me some tips on things to check. Currently, I'm having this fuel pump issue w/ my 2008 CRD. Do you happen to know where to find the fuel lines or a factory part number? Trying to replace with same stuff and just not sure what to order. Thanks again!

I tried to work out the part numbers before but it is not easy. they have weird names and aren't very specific. your best bet is to look at the photos on rock auto

¿can you show the 10mm fitting by the oil filler?, my jeep does not have it and i'm wondering how does it look. I'm also missing the back bracket for the engine cover!
@SteveRivett
@SteveRivett 2 жыл бұрын
you should be able to see what you are looking for if you watch some of my videos. The back bracket has two tabs that the cover slide around. I took my engine cover off years ago along with the cylinder head covers. They only keep the engine quieter and make it harder to work on.

At 26:09 that's the EGR cooler with the QR code, not the oil cooler. The oil cooler is deeper still underneath that

Hi. Thanks for the video. I’m having the same year car. How often I should change fuel filter..? Thanks.
@SteveRivett
@SteveRivett 4 жыл бұрын
The manual says every 25k miles. I would say every 2 or 3 years. The filter was 8 years old when I got my Jeep. I do recommend putting fuel conditioner in the tank in the spring and fall to clear out any moisture you may have picked up during the changes of season.

Hi Stephen. Is it essential to bleed the filter into the plastic bottle? Would the filter self-bleed without doing this? Thank you for the video.

Hi , very nice video. You mentioned oil leak not from the rear oil seal , where could it leak from , I changed the oil seal twice and still leaking. Please help , many thanks
@SteveRivett
@SteveRivett 4 жыл бұрын
Look at videos regarding "OM642 oil cooler leak" There is an o-ring under the cooler that is famous for failing. If you have a borescope you should be able to look in from the front of the engine and around the fuel filter to look in the valley on top of the engine. This is a big job which takes about 20 hours to do on your own and you need a service kit full of parts.
@Becoolsof

Stephen Rivett , I did that , with the purple seal . Still no joy thanks a lot pal for the reply.
@bushturkey1019
@bushturkey1019 Жыл бұрын
@@Becoolsof probably super late but check underneath the turbo inlet. The intake pipe to turbo seal can wear and leak from under the turbo. Mimics an oil cooler seal issue because it runs down, into the valley and out the back of the motor.

Hi, have you had your Jeep long? How many miles has it done? Have you had many issues? I've just bought one. Thanks!
@SteveRivett
@SteveRivett 3 жыл бұрын
I'm at about 293,000 km now. The Jeep was a city vehicle when I bought it and it had a lot of problems when I started using it for long distance. The last year has been pretty good but they are higher maintenance than FWD cars. I'm sure you'll like it if you do your own work on it.

can you just fill the filter with fuel? also can you tell me what would happen if i ran out of fuel? great video!! just got 2008 jeep diesel
@SteveRivett
@SteveRivett Жыл бұрын
if you run out of fuel you just need to top up the tank and turn on the key without cranking. it will fill up the filter after a couple key cycles and then you can start it

that is the access cover for the torque converter. if you are leaking from there that may be the oil cooler, you need to look at the top of the engine in the valley too
